    Chapter 1 
     
     1-5 Paul expresses great affection for Timothy.
     6-14 Exhorts him to improve his spiritual gifts.
    15-18 Tells of many who basely deserted him; but speaks with affection of Onesiphorus.
     

    Chapter 2 

    1-7 The apostle exhorts Timothy to persevere with diligence, like a soldier, a combatant, and a husbandman.
    8-13 Encouraging him by assurances of a happy end of his faithfulness.
    14-21 Warnings to shun vain babblings and dangerous errors.
    22-26 Charges to flee youthful lusts, and to minister with zeal against error, but with meekness of spirit.
     

    Chapter 3 

    1-9 The apostle foretells the rise of dangerous enemies to the gospel.
    10-13 Proposes his own example to Timothy. 
    14-17 And exhorts him to continue in the doctrine he had learned from the Holy Scriptures.
     

    Chapter 4 

    1-5 The apostle solemnly charges Timothy to be diligent, though many will not bear sound doctrine.
    6-8 Enforces the charge from his own martyrdom, then at hand.
    9-13 Desires him to come speedily.
    14-18 He cautions, and complains of such as had deserted him; and expresses his faith as to his own preservation to the heavenly kingdom.
    19-22 Friendly greetings and his usual blessing.
