Chapter 1

and joy.

help against sinful infirmities.

and love to the brethren.

15-23 All are cautioned against the love of this world,
and against errors.
24-29 They are encouraged to stand fast in faith and
holiness.
Chapter 3
1-2 The apostle admires the love of God in making believers
his children.
3-10 The purifying influence of the hope of seeing Christ,
and the danger of pretending to this, and living in sin.
11-15 Love to the brethren is the character of real Christians.
16-21 That love described by its actings.
22-24 The advantage of faith, love, and obedience.
Chapter 4
1-6 Believers cautioned against giving heed to every one
that pretends to the Spirit.
7-21 Brotherly love enforced.
Chapter 5
1-5 Brotherly love is the effect of the new birth, which
makes obedience to all God's commandments pleasant.
6-8 Reference to witnesses agreeing to prove that Jesus,
the Son of God, is the true Messiah.
9-12 The satisfaction the believer has about Christ,
and eternal life through him.
13-17 The assurance of God's hearing and answering prayer.
18-21 The happy condition of true believers, and a charge
to renounce all idolatry.
