LOS ANGELES (TICKER) -- Derek Bell doubled home Craig Biggio with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning as the Houston Astros blew a ninth-inning lead before pulling out a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Biggio drew a leadoff walk from Jeff Shaw (1-2) to start the 10th. Bell followed by lacing a 1-1 pitch to the right-center field gap that scored Biggio without a play. Ken Caminiti added a sacrifice fly for a much-needed insurance run, then made a leaping grab of Gary Sheffield's line drive in the bottom of the inning. Houston closer Billy Wagner (1-1), who allowed a tying homer to Tripp Cromer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, surrendered a two-out homer to Raul Mondesi in the 10th. But Wagner caught Eric Karros looking at a third strike to end the game. "You're going to give up home runs when you're a power pitcher," said Houston manager Larry Dierker. "It comes with the territory. But he got Karros and we got the win. It's a really sweet win." Carl Everett belted a solo homer for the Astros, who have won seven of their last nine games. Mondesi went 3-for-5 and Eric Young had two hits and an RBI for Los Angeles, which has dropped four of its last five.

Everett led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on rookie catcher Angel Pena's throwing error. Everett raced home on Mills' wild pitch. Wagner, who had not allowed a homer in 15 1/3 innings, blew his first save in 12 chances in the bottom of the ninth when the light-hitting Cromer launched a 2-2 pitch over the left-field wall for his first homer. "That was sitting on a tee for him," Wagner said of his pitch to Cromer. "I wanted to come inside on him but it was right down the middle." The Astros got on the board in the second against starter Chan Ho Park when Everett homered into the second deck just inside the right-field foul pole. It was only the sixth home run to reach the second deck at Dodger Stadium. Park gave Los Angeles solid outing, allowing just Everett's homer and five hits over seven innings. He walked two and struck out six. Houston starter Mike Hampton kept the Dodgers off the board until the seventh. Mark Grudzielanek led off with a single, took second on Pena's bunt and continued to third when Hampton threw wildly to first. Young singled in the tying run one out later.

He allowed one run and seven hits over 7 1/3 innings, walking five and striking out five. In his last five starts, the lefthander has surrendered just five earned runs and 23 hits in 38 1/3 innings. updated at Thu May 20 23:18:41 1999 PT = Yahoo
