Pittsburgh 5, Los Angeles 4

PITTSBURGH (TICKER) -- Things are falling into place -- and high into the air -- for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jason Kendall and rookie Warren Morris had run-scoring hits in the eighth inning that bounced high off the artificial turf of Three Rivers Stadium as the Pirates posted their seventh win in nine games, a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kevin Young started the rally with a two-out, four-pitch walk off Jamie Arnold (1-2). Kendall then hit a pop fly near the left field line that landed in front of Gary Sheffield. The ball then caromed over his head and while waiting for the ball to come down, Young raced around the bases and Kendall cruised into second with a double.

"Walk a guy. Get a couple of dunk hits that wouldn't be hits anywhere else in the world," Los Angeles manager Davey Johnson said. "Your outfielders have to slow down to cut off every play. On a normal field, Sheffield catches that ball chest high. Here you have to play deep to cut it off. That's the way the ball bounces here."

Morris then blooped a single that landed in front of center fielder Devon White, scoring Kendall with the go-ahead run.

"I don't know whether it's the sponge rubber or the asphalt," Pirates manager Gene Lamont said. "When it's hot you get bounces here. You can see it in batting practice. If you're too conservative, you can get burned."

Marc Wilkins (1-0) earned the win despite allowing a run-scoring single to Raul Mondesi in the eighth that gave Los Angeles a 4-3 lead.

Mike Williams allowed a single in the ninth before earning his 10th save in 12 chances.

Pittsburgh tied a season high with its fourth straight win.

"We've been playing hard all along," said Pirates outfielder Al Martin, who homered in the fourth inning and drove in a pair of runs. "It's good to see breaks come our way. This team will surprise people."

Another friendly bounce and an error by White helped Pittsburgh score twice in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

Pinch hitter Abraham Nunez started the inning by bunting the ball over the head of third baseman Adrian Beltre, who was playing in close. bThe ball landed just inside the third-base line.

Martin singled off starter Chan Ho Park to bring home Nunez and went all to way to third when the ball got by White for an error. Ed Sprague doubled to right-center fielder to bring home a run.

Park allowed three runs and five hits in six innings.

Pittsburgh starter Jose Silva, who had made his last three appearances in relief, allowed three runs and four hits in six innings, including a two-run homer to Todd Hundley.

The Dodgers opened the scoring on an RBI double by Eric Young in the third before Hundley hit his sixth homer an inning later to make it 3-0.

The Pirates cut the lead to 3-1 on Martin's fourth homer in the fourth.

Defensively, Morris was part of two of the three double plays turned by Pittsburgh from the fifth through seventh innings.

"This whole season is a constant learning thing for me," said Morris. "Everyday I'm learning things and it mentally drains me as I go home."
