 Los Angeles 9, Montreal 6

MONTREAL (TICKER) -- Red-hot Eric Karros hit his first career grand slam and tied a career high with six RBI as the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied from a six-run deficit for a 9-6 victory over the Montreal Expos.

Karros hit his 203rd career homer in a six-run seventh inning, tying it 6-6 against Expos reliever Anthony Telford. He had the highest total of homers without a grand slam among active major leaguers.

"It was nice to get it out of the way and to come at a time when it could get us back in the ballgame," Karros said. "Being down by six runs going into the seventh, things didn't look good for us."

The Dodgers snapped the deadlock by scoring three unearned runs in the eighth. Karros capped the inning with a two-run single against Bobby Ayala (1-6), matching a career best for RBI set August 24, 1993 against Pittsburgh.

"We know Eric Karros is one of the toughest outs late in the game," Expos manager Felipe Alou said. "With two swings, he drove in six runs."

Karros went 3-for-5 with his 26th home run. He is 8-for-16 with three doubles, a homer and 14 RBI in his last four games, despite going 0-for-3 in the Tuesday's series-opening 6-4 loss.

"He's got close to 30 homers, 30 doubles and when you bat .300 you don't do that being lucky," Expos catcher Chris Widger said. "You do that because you're good and because you hit pitchers' pitches as well as mistakes."

The Expos scored four runs in the first against Chan Ho Park but still had a four-game winning streak snapped. They have the second-worst record in the National League at 46-65, despite winning nine of their last 12 games.

Park failed to win for the fifth straight start, but four relievers combined on 3 1/3 scoreless innings as the Dodgers improved to 5-4 on a 10-game road trip.

"We played pretty well in New York and then to come in here yesterday and not play so well, it was a little bit frustrating," Karros said. "Our whole year has beeen marked by inconsistency. That's why we are below .500 (51-63)."

Mike Maddux (1-1) pitched a scoreless seventh for the victory, the same night that brother Greg defeated the Houston Astros.

Jeff Shaw recorded his 24th save in 27 chances, despite giving up a run in the ninth. He got Jose Vidro to fly out with runners on first and second to end it.

The Dodgers got a pair of breaks in the eighth. Third baseman Shane Andrews started the inning with a two-base throwing error. Later, Ayala botched a sure force at the plate on Mark Grudzielanek's comebacker.

"We gave it up. We gave it away," Alou said. "If anything, what I'm most disappointed about is the ground ball back to the mound where we got no outs. Everything else I can sleep with."

Adrian Beltre, who hit a two-run homer in the sixth, scored the decisive run on Ayala's miscue. Todd Hollandsworth and Gary Sheffield struck out, but Karros followed with a dunker to right-center field, increasing the lead to 9-6.

Rookie Dan Smith carried a shutout into the seventh before issuing a leadoff walk to Todd Hundley. Beltre followed with his second homer in as many nights and 12th of the year.

"We walked the leadoff guy and most times you do that he's going to score," Smith said. "I got behind Beltre and made a bad pitch and he hit it out of the park. It was just a bad night for us. We got a lead and I held it for a while, but I kind of jump-started it there in the seventh."

Guillermo Mota replaced Smith and allowed consecutive one-out singles. After a forceout, Sheffield walked, Telford spelled Mota and Karros sent a 2-1 pitch inside the foul pole in left.

Mota, Telford and Ayala combined to allow seven runs -- four earned -- and four hits over 1 2/3 innings.

"Five days ago, I couldn't get out of the first inning," Smith said. "So who am I to be upset with the way anyone throws?"

Smith, who gave up Tony Gwynn's 3,000th hit and recorded only two outs against San Diego on Friday, gave up two runs and five hits over six-plus innings. He walked two and struck out seven.

Park yielded six runs and 10 hits with five walks, six strikeouts, two wild pitches and a balk over 5 1/3 innings.

The Expos jumped on Park during a four-run first, capped by Widger's two-run double. Rondell White singled home a run and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth as Montreal grabbed a 6-0 cushion.

"He ran into trouble in the sixth but he kept us in the ballgame and threw the ball really well after that first inning," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said of Park.

Rookie Onan Masaoka stranded a pair of runners in the sixth before Maddux, Pedro Borbon and Shaw each pitched an inning.

"The bullpen did a good job and the offense woke up and helped out," Johnson said. "It made my day a lot easier."

Expos All-Star right fielder Vladimir Guerrero went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 15 games. White and Vidro each had three hits.
