| Colorado 4, Los Angeles
1 (1st game)
Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Chan Ho Park delivers to Cincinnati Reds' MIke Cameron, who hit a double to open the game, Tuesday July 27, 1999, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Kevin Karzin) LOS ANGELES (TICKER) -- Dante Bichette snapped a tie with his 20th home run and Bobby Jones and three relievers combined on a three-hitter to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 4-1 victory in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Bichette snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the sixth inning when he belted a 0-1 pitch off starter Chan Ho Park to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead. Bichette reached the 20-homer plateau for the seventh consecutive season and has driven in four runs in his last two games against the Dodgers. "I just got a good pitch to hit," Bichette said. "Chan Ho had real good stuff today. He pitched well enough to win, but Bobby Jones pitched a good game too and our bullpen was outstanding." The Dodgers are playing their first home doubleheader since playing three straight twinbills from July 6-8, 1992. Colorado jumped on top in the third. Terry Shumpert singled and two outs later Neifi Perez popped to second, where Jose Vizcaino lost the ball in the sun and it dropped in for a single. Running with the pitch, Shumpert beat the throw home. Los Angeles tied it in the bottom half as Angel Pena smacked his fourth homer off Jones. Perez drove in his second run with a single in the seventh and Jeff Barry added a RBI double in the eighth. Jones (5-8) allowed one run and three hits in 5 1/3 innings as he broke a three-game winless streak. Dave Veres pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to record his 17th save in 21 opportunities. "Jones threw a good game," Colorado manager Jim Leyland said. "You have to keep an eye on him when he get close to 100 (pitches). His stuff is plenty good, he just has to be consistent in his command." Park surrendered three runs and six hits with a season-high nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. "I felt good with the breaking ball," Park said. "I threw a lot of fastballs for strikeouts. I missed my location and Bichette hit it out. Jones pitched good, it's just tough luck. I'm trying to pitch better than I did in the first half. Right now I feel more confident." Jery DiPoto, Mike DeJean and Veres retired all 11 batters they faced. "They're all capable of pitching on a championship team," Leyland said. "We just have a lot of guys who suffer by pitching at Coors Field." Pena had two of the three hits for the Dodgers, with Gary Sheffield collecting the other one. "We played flat and let them stay in the game," Sheffield said. "We have to be aggressive. I thought coming home was what we needed, but it seemed we took a step backward." updated at Thu Jul 22 18:14:17 1999 PT
