LOS ANGELES (TICKER) -- Misery loves company.
Los Angeles Dodgers' Todd Hundley dives to field a throw at the plate while San Francisco Giants' Ellis Burks, not shown, scores during the second inning Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Michael Caulfield) With their own playoff hopes long gone, the Los Angeles Dodgers pushed their archrivals, the San Francisco Giants, to the brink of elimination with a 5-3 victory. Chan Ho Park recorded his career-high sixth straight win and Gary Sheffield's 29th homer proved to be the difference as the Dodgers took two of three from San Francisco and have won five of six overall. The Giants fell 9 1/2 games behind first-place Arizona in the National League West. The second-year Diamondbacks clinched at least a tie for the division title, and can secure the crown outright on Friday when they open a three-game series in San Francisco. "We have a lot to overcome. Park was effective and we squandered opportunities," San Francisco manager Dusty Baker said. "There is not a lot you can do." Park (12-10) allowed three runs and five hits over six innings, but matched a career high with eight walks. Mike Maddux and Jeff Shaw, who recorded his 34th save, picked him up with three innings of hitless relief. "I feel a lot better. I feel strong and I believe in myself," Park said. "I'm hoping to throw more strikes. I've been battling with that all year. Right now I'm pitching good and it will help my confidence next year. I think I've learned a lot from this year." Sheffield's one-out solo shot off starter Livan Hernandez (7-12) in the fifth extended the Dodgers' lead to 4-2. Devon White had two hits, two RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases for Los Angeles, which has won six of 10 from San Francisco this year and will pay its final visit to 3Com Park from September 28-30. "I was proud of Chan Ho," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said. "He didn't have good command but he was able to win again at home. It's something you can build on for next year. We didn't do much to help him early on. But it was a great effort on his part. It feels good to end the year strong." Hernandez yielded four runs and nine hits over five innings and is winless in his last four starts for the Giants, who have dropped five of six. The Giants jumped on Park in the second. Ellis Burks drew a one-out walk and rookie Armando Rios singled him to second before Park uncorked a wild pitch to move both runners up. Rich Aurilia plated Burks by hitting a slow grounder to third, which Adrian Beltre fielded before firing a wild throw that allowed Rios to reach third. Marvin Benard made it 2-0 with a two-out RBI single to right. Los Angeles responded in the bottom half. Todd Hollandsworth doubled with one out and scored on White's single to left. White stole second before coming home on Beltre's single to center that knotted the game at 2-2. With two out and a runner at first in the third, White put the Dodgers ahead for good with a triple to right.
San Francisco Giants' Rich Aurilia grimaces after falling down while swinging at a pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers during the eighth inning in Los Angeles on Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999. Aurilia stayed in the game. The Dodgers won 5-3. (AP Photo/Michael Caulfield) Sheffield's homer gave Park a two-run cushion in the fifth, but that was nearly squandered by the righthander's wildness in the sixth. Park surrendered a one-out double to pinch-hitter Jay Canizaro before walking Benard. Bill Mueller grounded into a force play that moved Canizaro to third before Park's second wild pitch of the night cut the deficit to 4-3 and moved Mueller to second. Park escaped further damage by inducing J.T. Snow into an inning-ending flyout. "We didn't get the key hits when we needed them," Snow said. "We did what we could, we just didn't pull out the win. What can you say?" White walked and stole second with two out in the eighth. Todd
Hundley also walked and the two combined on a double steal before Burks
dropped what appeared to be a routine foul out to left off the bat of Beltre.
Beltre then hit a grounder to short that Aurilia fired high, allowing White
to score the final run.
