Chicago Cubs 4, Texas 3

CHICAGO (TICKER) -- John Rocker is not having a good week.

Alex Gonzalez belted Rocker's third pitch over the bleachers in left-center field in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Texas Rangers.

For the second game in a row, Texas rallied from a two-run deficit, only to see Rocker lose in the bottom of the ninth. On Sunday, the troubled lefthander surrendered three consecutive two-out singles in a 7-6 loss to Houston.

"We liked the matchup we had with him and Hundley in the eighth, he did a good job there," Texas manager Jerry Narron said. "But giving up that home run to Gonzalez to end the game has to be tough on him. When you lose two games in a row in that fashion, it wears on everybody."

It was the second walk-off home run of the season for Gonzalez, who belted the game-winner off St. Louis' Mike Timlin on May 6.

"He had thrown me two cutters on the previous pitches, so I was looking cut fastball again," Gonzalez said. "As you can see, I got good wood on it. I didn't think there was any doubt that it was a home run when I hit it."

Chicago closer Antonio Alfonseca (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit. Starter Jason Bere gave up three runs -- two earned -- and three hits in seven-plus innings. The righthander struck out seven and retired 17 consecutive Rangers after serving up Rafael Palmeiro's controversial home run in the second.

Rocker (1-3) struck out the only other batter he faced but saw his ERA rise to 6.75.

Corey Patterson went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI for the Cubs, who improved to 3-1 on a 13-game homestand.

With one out in the second inning, Palmeiro lined a deep fly ball down the right field line that curved just inside the foul pole. Despite an argument from Chicago manager Don Baylor, the umpires ruled it a home run, giving Texas a 1-0 lead.

"It was really nice to hit that home run," said Palmeiro, a former Cub. "I have always loved this ballpark, it's my favorite in baseball. But it really took the edge off it by losing the game. Right now, we just can't get that one extra run to win a ballgame."

"It was a guess," Baylor said. "That's all it was, was a guess by the umpire. I don't think any of them saw the ball really well. You could tell by the way the fans reacted that it was a foul ball, but that's the way it goes."

The Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the third. Delino DeShields walked and advanced on Bere's sacrifice before Patterson deposited a 2-2 pitch from starter Chan Ho Park over the right field wall. Park surrendered three runs and four hits in five innings.

"I just waited back on the pitch from Park," Patterson said. "I had seen a lot of his pitches up until that point. He just threw me a fastball away and I was able to hit it hard."

DeShields generated Chicago's third run in the fifth, hitting a leadoff double and advancing on another sacrifice by Bere before scoring on Patterson's groundout.

Bere was cruising, but the Rangers took advantage of a costly error to tie it in the eighth.

Palmeiro hit a pop-up to the right side of the pitcher's mound and should have been the 18th consecutive batter retired by Bere. But first baseman Fred McGriff dropped the ball and Bere unraveled.

Herbert Perry singled and Kevin Mench plated Palmeiro with a double, chasing Bere.

"In that situation, I am looking to drive the ball where it's pitched," Mench said. "Bere had been awful tough on us all night long, but he got the ball up a little bit in the eighth inning. That is when we were able to get to him."

"There's not much I can say about it," Bere said. "I guess every team has a pitcher that has some bad luck along the way. It's not like the guys aren't trying for me. Maybe they are trying too hard."

Righthander Juan Cruz came on and walked Mike Young to load the bases before Mike Lamb lifted a sacrifice fly to tie it at 3-3.

Patterson led off the bottom of the first with a double but was caught in a rundown trying to stretch it into a triple.

The Cubs threatened to increase their lead in the sixth when McGriff and Moises Alou drew walks off Texas reliever Anthony Telford. But the righthander struck out Hundley and got Gonzalez to line into a double play.
