박찬호는 4일(한국시간) PNC파크에서 열린 피츠버그 파이어리츠와의 원정경기에 선발등판해 4⅓이닝 동안 4사구 3개를 허용하며 8안타 7실점(5자책점)을 했지만 타선의 도움으로 패전은 면했다. 삼진은 단 1개에 그쳤다. 

이날 최고구속 156km를 선보인 박찬호는 87개의 공을 던졌고, 스트라이크는 52개였다. 방어율은 5.84. 

팀이 선취점을 뽑아줘 1-0으로 앞선 상황에서 마운드에 오른 박찬호는 고질적인 '1회 불안'을 떨치지 못했다. 샌디에이고 유니폼을 입고 처음 등판해서인지 1회부터 제구력이 좋지 못했다. 일단 스트라이크를 잡는데 어려움을 겪었고, 스트라이크도 높게 형성되는 등 긴장하고 있는 모습이 역력했다. 

선두타자 크리스 더피에게 좌전안타를 허용한데 이어 다음타자 프레디 산체스를 볼넷으로 내줘 무사 1, 2루 위기를 자초한 박찬호는 3번타자 조디 제롯에게 1타점 우전 적시타를 내주며 동점을 허용했다. 여기에 3루수 조 랜더의 실책까지 겹치면서 추가실점까지 했다. 

박찬호는 이어 제이슨 베이의 내야땅볼로 1점을 더 허용했다. 1회 투구수만 27개. 

2회를 3자범퇴로 막은 박찬호는 3회 들어 강속구를 곁들이며 타자들의 타이밍을 뺐는 노련함을 발휘하며 두타자를 손쉽게 잡아 안정을 되찾는듯 했지만 베이슨 베이에게 좌중월 1점 홈런을 내준 뒤 호세 카스티요에게 2루타, 브래드 엘드레드에 1타점 좌전안타를 내주며 2실점, 또 다시 흔들렸다. 

박찬호는 5회초 에릭 영의 좌월 3점 홈런으로 5-5가 되면서 승리를 따낼 기회를 얻었다. 

그러나 5회말 박찬호는 선두타자 베이에 풀카운트 끝에 볼넷을 허용한 뒤 엘드레드에 좌월 2루타, 라이언 도밋에게 2타점 우전적시타를 내주고 마운드를 클레이 헨슬리에게 넘겼다. 

샌디에이고 타선은 6회 반격에서 칼리 그린이 좌월 2점 홈런을 터뜨린 뒤, 영의 1타점 우전안타로 8-7로 역전시켜 박찬호의 내셔널리그 첫 패전을 막았다. 

오랜만에 타석에 들어선 박찬호는 첫 타석에서는 삼진으로 물러났지만, 5회 무사 1루에서 1루쪽 희생번트를 성공시킨 뒤 투수의 실책으로 진루에 성공했다. 이어 영의 좌월 3점 홈런 때에는 홈까지 밟아 득점을 올렸다. 

샌디에이고는 피츠버그에 9-8로 패했다.

박찬호는 전 소속팀 텍사스 레인저스에서도 평균 6.73의 득점 지원을 받으며, 아메리칸리그 투수 가운데 줄곧 타선지원 투수 10위내에 들며 재기에 성공했다. 

하지만, 샌디에이고는 텍사스 만큼 폭발적인 타선이 아니다. 

샌디에이고는 메이저리그 30개팀 가운데 팀 득점력 27위(455점, 텍사스 3위-566점), 팀 홈런 24위(89개, 텍사스 1위-174개), 팀 타율 2할5푼8리(27위, 10위-2할6푼8리)로 텍사스에 비하면 엄청나게 빈약한 타선. 

샌디에이고는 후반기 들어 4승13패를 기록하는 동안 4점이상 뽑아낸 경기가 단 4차례에 불과할 정도다. 더구나 지난 9경기에서 단 1개의 홈런도 기록하지 못하고 있다. 

그러나 박찬호에겐 달랐다. 전날 11득점으로 팀 4연패를 끊으며 타격감을 조율한 샌디에이고는 이날 3회초 선두타자 미겔 올리보의 좌월 1점 홈런으로 9경기 314타수만에 '홈런 가뭄'에서 탈출했다. 

이후 샌디에이고 타선은 2개의 홈런을 추가하면서 홈런 단비를 뿌렸다. 5회에는 에릭 영이 좌월 3점 홈런, 6회에는 칼리 그린의 좌월 2점 홈런이 터지면서 박찬호를 패전위기에서 구했다. 

이날 샌디에이고는 패했지만 이틀연속 타선이 폭발하면서 후반기 포스트시즌 진출 경쟁에 청신호를 켰다. 

박찬호도 뜻하지 않은 타선의 도움을 받아 다음 등판에 대한 부담을 그나마 줄일 수 있게 됐다.

가끔 투수가 던진 공이 아닌 방망이에 맞아 나가는 타구가 스피드건에 찍혀 터무니 없는 스피드가 찍히는 것도 사실이다. 

그러나 박찬호가 던진 공은 볼 판정을 받기는 했지만 몸쪽 꽉 차는 공으로 도밋은 방망이를 휘두르지도 않아 타구가 스피드건에 찍힐 가능성은 전혀 없는 상황이었다.

최근 시속 153km(95마일)짜리 직구도 드물어진 박찬호가 156km를 찍자 피츠버그 TV 중계 팀도 깜짝 놀래기는 마찬가지였다. 

캐스터가 깜짝 놀라며 '97마일이나 나왔다'고 말하지 해설자 스티브 블래스는 "소리도 97마일짜리였다(It sounded like 97miles)"라며 태연하게 응답하기도 했다. 

스피드도 스피드였지만 포수 미트에 꽂히는 소리도 그만큼 위력을 느끼게 했다는 것이다. 

박찬호가 97마일짜리 직구를 던진 건 2001년 4월30일 필라델피아 필리스전에서 5회 말론 앤더슨을 상대로 던진 이후 4년여만의 일. 박찬호는 이날 비록 패전투수가 되기는 했지만 156km짜리 직구 외에 151km짜리 직구도 두 차례 기록하는 등 몸 컨디션에 따라서는 여전히 상대방을 압도하는 빠른 공을 던질 수 있다는 사실을 보여주었다.

Eldred's third consecutive double drove in the winning run in the ninth inning, and the Pirates overcame three San Diego homers to beat the first-place Padres 9-8 Wednesday night. 

With Rob Mackowiak on first base after walking, Eldred hit a two-out line drive into the right-center field gap. Center fielder Dave Roberts, who entered in the top of the inning, slid to his knees to try to cut the ball off, but it skidded past him to score Mackowiak. 

Eldred, called up July 22 after hitting 65 homers in 1 1/2 minor league seasons, has yet to homer in 27 at-bats, but he had a four-hit night and drove in three runs. He had only one RBI coming into the game. 

``There's no better feeling than that, to get a game-winning hit in the ninth,'' said Eldred, who jumped his average from .174 to .296. ``I knew it was only a matter of time before I started hitting. I really haven't felt overmatched up here, and I've never lost any confidence.'' 

The Padres insist they haven't, either, despite losing for the 13th in 15 games. After winning 11-3 Tuesday, they held a team meeting intended to put a miserable 8-18 July behind them, then wasted an eight-run night as Chan Ho Park flopped in his Padres debut. 
 
``It was a tough one to lose,'' Eric Young said. ``There were some good signs out there, and we've got to build on those positives.'' 

San Diego hadn't homered in nine games since July 22, only to hit three in the first seven innings -- including game-tying homers by Young, a three-run shot in the fifth, and Khalil Greene, a two-run drive in the sixth. Young also had an RBI single in a three-run sixth that put San Diego up 8-7. 

Young, out most of this season with a separated shoulder, hit his first homer since Sept. 22 with Texas. 

Eldred doubled ahead of rookie Ryan Doumit's two-run single that restored the Pirates' lead at 7-5 in the fifth. Eldred's second double tied it at 8 in the seventh against reliever Scott Linebrink as the Pirates got seven hits and five RBIs from their three rookies, leadoff man Chris Duffy, Eldred and Doumit, who added a two-run single. 

Jason Bay, last year's NL rookie of the year, is encouraged by all the Pirates rookies -- especially unbeaten left-hander Zach Duke (4-0), as the NL rookie of the month in July. 

``They're still getting their feet wet, but they still want to do well,'' Bay said. ``It's nice to see they're getting some confidence and doing well.'' 

Just before Eldred got his game-winning hit, Pades reliever Akinori Otsuka (1-4) appeared confused by what to throw, gesturing to the dugout as if appealing for a pitch to be called. Manager Bruce Bochy said the umpires told him Otsuka was moving too much on the mound before coming set in his delivery. 
 
``There's a lot of pitchers who have a little rocking motion, but they thought he was moving too much,'' Bochy said. ``He's been doing that since he's been here and I don't know why it was brought up -- this umpiring crew has had him before.'' 

Jose Mesa (2-6) pitched the ninth inning in a non-save situation for the victory, only the Pirates' second in eight games.

Park gave up seven runs -- six earned -- and eight hits in 4 1-3 innings. Park, a former Dodgers pitcher, returned to the NL in a July 29 trade after four mostly unsuccessful seasons in Texas. 

``A couple of hits cost three or four runs and that hurts,'' Park said. ``It was my first outing in 10 days facing hitters and maybe that cost a little bit. It's not going to be normal after not pitching in 10 days and there were a lot of things going in on my head.'' 

After former Mariners catcher Manuel Olivo hit his first NL homer in the third off Dave Williams, Bay's 21st homer and Eldred's RBI single put Pittsburgh up 5-2. Before Olivo went deep, the Padres had gone 320 at-bats since their last homer by Geoff Blum, the longest streak by any team in the majors this season.

San Diego took a one-game lead in the NL West into the game despite its losing record (52-55). No team has led a division with a losing record so late in a season since Texas (52-62) led the AL West on Aug. 11, 1994, the day before a season-ending labor dispute began. ... 삼진 3개를 솎아내면서 2~3회를 깔끔하게 막은 김병현은 4회 2사 후 더햄에게 우선상에 떨어지는 빗맞은 2루타를 허용했으나 후속 터커의 강습 타구를 2루수 루이스 곤살레스가 잘 걷어낸 덕분에 무실점으로 막았다.

2회 첫 상대에서 터커를 삼진으로 돌려세웠으나 4회 타구는 배트 중심에 잘 맞아 나간 것이어서 분위기는 심상치 않았다.

5~6회를 무실점으로 넘긴 김병현은 결국 7회 1사 후 터커와 세 번째 만남에서 안타를 맞고 말았다.

터커는 우월 3루타로 김병현을 두들겼고 에두가르도 알폰소의 우전 적시타 때 홈을 밟아 결국 2-2 동점을 이끌어냈다.

김병현은 8회부터 댄 미셀리에게 마운드를 넘겼다. 투구수는 97개였다. 직구 스피드는 134Km에 불과했으나 볼끝의 움직임이 어느 때보다 좋았다.

2승 8패를 유지했고 시즌 방어율을 5.14까지 낮췄다. 7회 타석에서는 2사 후 깨끗한 중전안타를 때려 올 시즌 18타수 만에 첫 안타를 기록하기도 했다.

최희섭이 9경기 연속으로 선발 출장에서 제외됐다.

LA 다저스의 최희섭은 전날 생애 처음으로 대타 홈런을 기록했지만 한국시간으로 4일 열린 워싱턴 내셔널스와의 경기에서도 선발 엔트리에 빠졌다.

최희섭은 R.F.K. 스타디움에서 벌어진 워싱턴 내셔널스와의 원정경기에서 1-3으로 뒤진 9회 2사 1루에서 투수 지오바니 카라라 대신 대타로 나와 삼진으로 물러났고 경기는 그대로 종료됐다.

지난 7월25일 뉴욕 메츠전 이후 9경기 연속 선발 결장.

이날 경기에서 1루수 미트는 포수 제이슨 필립스가 끼었다. LA다저스 짐 트레이시 감독은 도루 저지율이 낮은 필립스를 1루수로 돌리고 스위치 히터인 디오너 나바로를 포수 자리에 앉혀 라인업에 좌타자를 5명이나 포진시켰다.
