Oakland 8, Texas 5

By STEPHEN HAWKINS, AP Sports Writer
April 19, 2005

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -- Those extra batting practice swings against his manager paid off for Erubiel Durazo.

The Oakland cleanup hitter began Monday hitting pitches thrown by manager Ken Macha. He ended it by snapping out of his slump with three hits -- including his first two for extra bases this season -- in the Athletics' 8-5 win over the Texas Rangers.

``I've hit the ball hard right at guys,'' Durazo said. ``This helps a lot mentally. It was a little frustrating.''

Durazo came in hitting .154 with no extra-base hits in 39 at-bats -- a streak extended with a single in the first. Durazo finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Durazo wasn't the only struggling hitter that had a good night. Oakland had a season-high 13 hits, eight in the first 4 1-3 innings off Chan Ho Park (1-1).

``Some guys hadn't hit at all. They're going to hit, that was the case with Durazo,'' Macha said. ``Guys have track records, they will get their records up to where they normally are. It was a hot night. Hopefully, it will continue.''

Eric Chavez, still hitting just .191, put Oakland ahead to stay when he hit Park's first pitch of the fifth 449 feet into the second deck of the stands in right field for his second homer of the season. An RBI single by Mark Ellis later in the inning made it 4-2 and chased Park.

``I didn't have good stuff,'' Park said. ``I didn't have a good fastball, especially the changeup.''

Ellis, just 1-for-12 his previous four games, went 3-for-4 and scored twice. Mark Kotsay drove in three runs with a two-run single and a sacrifice fly.

``We're starting to hit the ball better,'' Ellis said. ``We're all clicking at the same time, where we were all slumping at the same time.''

There was plenty of offense for Dan Haren (1-1), who limited Texas to two runs and three hits over six innings.

``Obviously, we couldn't get anything going,'' Rangers shortstop Michael Young said.

Haren struck out seven and walked five. The right-hander allowed an unearned run while striking out consecutive batters in the second inning, when he struck out three and walked three.

``It was probably the weirdest inning of my career,'' Haren said.

Rod Barajas tried to check his swing on a pitch that hit his arm. Plate umpire Tim McClelland ruled swinging third strike instead of hit batsman, bringing manager Buck Showalter out twice to argue.

Alfonso Soriano then struck out for what should have been the third out, but the ball ricocheted off catcher Jason Kendall's mitt to the backstop. David Dellucci scored from second base, taking advantage when Haren failed to cover the plate to tie the game 2-2.

``I saw some things there I haven't seen,'' Macha said.

``That situation never happened to me,'' Haren said. ``I learned the hard way.''

After Park got out of a bases-loaded jam in the first with consecutive infield popouts, Mark Teixeira had an RBI double in the bottom of the inning for a 1-0 Texas lead. Kotsay put the A's ahead with his two-run double in the second.

Oakland scored three runs in the seventh off Carlos Almanzar, who got just one out. It was the reliever's second outing since returning from an extended bereavement leave after the deaths of his mother and brother in the Dominican Republic.

Mark DeRosa hit a two-run homer, his first, in the ninth for Texas off Juan Cruz. Cruz gave up two more singles before Octavio Dotel came on. Teixeira had an RBI double to make it 8-5 before Dotel struck out Adrian Gonzalez with two men on for his second save in as many chances.

The offensive woes for Rangers outfielders Richard Hidalgo (three hits in his last 38 at-bats) and Kevin Mench (8-for-40) continued with hitless nights, but both had impressive defensive plays to start innings.

Hidalgo made a running catch, fully extending his glove when he leaped to snag Marco Scutaro's fly ball in the fourth. Two innings later, Mench used a full extension on the run -- without a leap -- to rob Kotsay, the Oakland center fielder who went face-first into the wall after running down Dellucci's fly ball to start the ninth.

Notes

The homer by Chavez was the longest in Texas since Carlos Delgado hit a 451-footer with Toronto on May 6, 2003. ... It is the first time in its five series this season that Oakland won the first game. ... Dellucci walked twice, giving him 12 walks in 34 plate appearances over nine games.
