샌디에이고 박찬호(33)가 손에 넣을 듯 했던 시즌 4승을 한순간에 놓쳤다.

박찬호는 8일(이하 한국시간) 밀러파크에서 벌어진 원정 밀워키전에서 6⅔이닝 5안타(1홈런) 4탈삼진 3볼넷 4실점했다. 

승패를 기록하지 못한 박찬호는 시즌 3승3패를 유지했고, 방어율은 4.26에서 4.36으로 조금 나빠졌다. 투구수는 106개(스트라이크 66개)였고, 볼 최고 스피드는 92마일(148km). 

박찬호는 4-3으로 앞선 7회말 2사 1루에서 스콧 캐시디에게 마운드를 물려주고 내려왔고, 캐시디가 곧바로 밀워키 2번 브래디 클락에게 역전 2점홈런을 허용했다. 순간 박찬호의 승리는 날아갔고, 실점은 4점으로 늘어났다. 

박찬호는 1회초 마이크 피아자의 1타점 중전적시타, 2회초 조시 바필드의 1타점 중전 적시타로 앞서나간 덕에 가벼운 마음으로 공을 던졌다. 

박찬호는 2회말 빌 홀에게 투런홈런을 허용했지만 6회까지 밀워키 타선을 효과적으로 제압하며 승리를 따내는 듯했다. 

박찬호는 3-2로 앞선 3회말 2사 1,3루에서 코리 코스키를 2루 땅볼로 유도한 이래 7회 투아웃까지 12타자 연속 범타처리를 해냈다. 4,5,6회는 3자범퇴. 

박찬호는 그러나 4-2로 앞선 7회 들어 힘들어하는 기색이 엿보였다. 공의 위력도 떨어졌다. 

선두타자 빌 홀을 상대로 9구까지 가는 접전 끝에 좌익수플라이로 잡아냈다. 그러나 방망이 중심에 제대로 맞은 타구였다. 

아어 채드 몰러를 헛스윙삼진으로 처리하며 투아웃을 잡은 박찬호는 대타 게이브 그로스를 볼넷으로 내보냈다. 원스트라이크 이후 연속 볼 4개. 

이게 화근이었다. 박찬호는 라키 윅스 주니어 타석 때 폭투로 1루주자 그로스를 2루까지 보냈고, 윅스에게 중전적시타를 맞아 4-3으로 쫓겼다. 

박찬호는 스콧 캐시디에 마운드를 물려줬고, 캐시디가 좌중월 역전 2점홈런을 맞아 스코어는 4-5로 뒤집어졌다. 

박찬호는 이날 타석에서는 병살타를 포함해 2타수 무안타에 그쳤다. 타율은 4할에서 3할6푼4리로 떨어졌다. 

샌디에이고는 4-5로 뒤진 8회초 아드리안 곤살레스와 비니 카스티야의 백-투-백 홈런에 힘입어 6-5로 재역전승했다.

"We've been missing that," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said. "It won the game for us tonight, and that was what was hurting us, the long ball. "The Mexican Connection game through." 

Milwaukee scored three times in the seventh to take a 5-4 lead but Gonzalez led off the next inning with his seventh homer. Gonzalez's drive came on an 0-2 pitch from Matt Wise (3-3) and extended his career-high hitting streak to 15 games. 

"An 0-2 change-up for a strike is pretty much a mistake," Gonzalez said. "It stayed up knee-high. When you throw a change-up with two strikes up in the zone, most times, you're going to be able to (hit) it." 
 
Castilla followed with another 0-2 pitch that resulted in a homer to left, his second of the season and first since April 12. 

"Two of them in a row? That's the last thing you'd expect," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. 

Added Wise: "I wouldn't take the pitch back. It was the location of them. Against Castilla I was trying to go head-high with a fastball possibly to set up a change-up, but I left it nipple-high and he tomahawked it." 

Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 13 opportunities. 

"That would have been a tough one to let get away," Bochy said. 

San Diego starter Chan Ho Park, trying to increase his career record to 8-0 against Milwaukee, retired 12 in a row before he got into trouble in the seventh. 

With two outs and San Diego ahead 4-2, pinch-hitter Gabe Gross walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. 
 
Rickie Weeks singled in Gross to get Milwaukee within one and chase Park from the game. 

"He's normally really, really tough on us," Yost said. 

Scott Cassidy (4-2) came in and gave up a two-run homer to Brady Clark, the first batter he faced, for a 5-4 lead. It was Clark's second homer of the season and first since April 22. 

"They've been doing a great job down in the bullpen," Bochy said. 

Milwaukee's Zach Jackson, making his first major league start, allowed 10 hits and four runs, two earned, in 6 1-3 innings. 

"I just wanted to give my team a chance to win," Jackson said. 

Khalil Greene doubled and scored on Castilla's single in the sixth to give San Diego a 4-2 lead. 

Mike Piazza had two RBIs and Josh Barfield also drove in a run for the Padres. 

Bill Hall hit a two-run shot for his 13th homer for Milwaukee. 

Notes: Left-handed pitcher Shawn Estes, on the disabled list with a strained left elbow, had successful Tommy John surgery by Dr. Lewis Yocum at the Surgery Center in Los Angeles. "It all went well," Bochy said. ... The homers given up by Wise were the first earned runs he allowed at home this season. ... Prince Fielder's bat flew out of his hands on the first pitch he saw in the first inning and struck a young girl in the head. The girl, sitting in the first row behind Milwaukee's dugout on the first-base side, walked out of the stadium along with medical personnel. ... Milwaukee pitcher Rick Helling, on the disabled list with a sprained right elbow since April 11, will start for Triple-A Nashville on Saturday at New Orleans. He will then pitch next Thursday against Omaha before returning to Milwaukee for further evaluation. ... San Diego right fielder Brian Giles robbed Jackson of a possible home run in his first major league at-bat in the second inning. ... Milwaukee has used a major league-high 24 different pitchers this season, one shy of the club record.

이전 경기까지 4연타석 안타를 기록하는 등 최근 9타석에서 8안타라는 폭풍같은 타격을 자랑하고 있는 박찬호였다. 그래서였을까? 벤치의 작전인지는 모르지만 박찬호는 번트 모션을 취하다가 초구 약간 높은 공에 강공으로 돌변했다. 2구째엔 오른쪽 무릎을 꿇고 몸을 최대한 낮춰 공을 끝까지 보며 번트를 댔으나 파울이 됐다.

투스트라이크 노볼이라 스리번트를 시도하느냐 강공으로 나가느냐의 갈림길에서 박찬호는 또 무릎을 꿇고 번트자세로 취했으나 공이 날아오자 또 강공으로 돌변했다. 공이 높아 스윙을 하지 않았지만 공격적인 분위기를 충분히 읽을 수 있었다. 결국 유격수 병살타로 물러났지만 문제는 그 다음이었다.너무 무리한 타격을 하다보니 숨고르기가 제대로 안됐고 2회말 선두타자에게 볼넷을 내준데 이어 빌 홀에게 투런홈런을 허용하고 말았다. 

1사후엔 상대 투수 자크 잭슨에게조차 오른쪽 펜스에서 잡히는 큼지막한 타구를 얻어맞았다. 점프해서 걷어낸 브라이언 자일스의 호수비로 아웃은 시켰지만 놀란 가슴을 쓸어내려야했다. 박찬호는 6회 1사 1·2루에 돌아온 세번재 타석에서도 초구에 버스터를 시도해 파울을 만든 뒤 2구째엔 안전하게 3루쪽으로 희생번트를 성공시켰다.내셔널리그는 투수도 타석에 들어서지만 본업은 역시 공을 던지는 것이다. 

대부분 투수들은 주자가 있을 때는 안정적으로 번트를 대는데 주력한다. 그런데 이날 박찬호는 두차례나 버스터를 시도하는 등 투수보다는 타자에 가까웠고 이것이 지나치면 상대팀을 자극하는 경우도 있다. 게다가 타격 뒤에 곧바로 돌아오는 투구 이닝에서는 아무래도 안정을 취하기가 쉽지않아 제구에 애를 먹을 수도 있다. 역설적으로 보면 너무 좋은 타격감 때문에 고생한 박찬호다. 
 
역대 '실버 슬러거' 수상 투수는 누구? 
 
‘실버 슬러거’는 지난 1980년 처음 시상식이 거행돼 지난해까지 26년간 수상자를 배출했다. 

박찬호가 도전하는 내셔널리그 투수 부문에서는 첫 해 봅 포시를 시작으로 지난해 제이슨 마키스까지 14명이 수상했다. 결국 연속 수상자가 많았다는 얘기. 타격에 재능이 있는 투수는 여러 차례 수상을 해왔다는 뜻이다.(표참고) 

80년 초대 수상자인 봅 포시는 87년에도 수상했고, 페르난도 발렌수엘라는 81년과 83년에 2차례 실버 슬러거를 받았다. 82년 피츠버그에서 수상의 영광을 안은 돈 로빈슨도 89년 샌프란시스코에서 생애 두 번째 기쁨을 누렸다. 

80년대에는 릭 로든(피츠버그)이 84~86년 3년연속 실버 슬러거의 주인공이 되는 단골손님으로 자리매김했다. 90년대에는 톰 글래빈(90, 91, 95, 96년)이 4차례나 수상해 로든의 기록을 깼고, 마이크 햄튼은 99~2003년 5년연속 수상해 투수 중에는 실버 슬러거를 독식하다시피했다. 최다수상이자 연속수상의 기록을 보유하게 됐다. 

드와이트 구든(92년), 오렐 허샤이저(93년), 리반 에르난데스(2004년) 등도 1차례씩 수상해 투구못지 않은 타격을 자랑했다. 지난해에는 제이슨 마키스가 받았다. 마키스는 올 시즌 세인트루이스의 토니 라루사 감독이 타자 대신 그를 대타로 기용할 정도로 타격실력을 인정받는 투수다. 

흥미로운 점은 역대 실버 슬러거 수상자를 보면 특급투수들이었다. 88년 팀 리어리(LA 다저스)와 지난해 마키스를 제외하면 모두 100승 이상을 수확한 투수들이어서 이들은 투타 양면에서 빼어난 기량을 발휘했다. 
 
실버 슬러거란? 
 
‘실버 슬러거(Silver Slugger)’ 상은 매년 메이저리그 각 포지션별 최고 공격력을 발휘한 타자에게 주어지는 상이다. 

내셔널리그는 투수도 타격을 하기 때문에 투수를 포함해 포수, 1루수, 2루수, 3루수, 유격수, 외야수 3명 등 총 9개의 포지션에서 주인공이 가려진다. 아메리칸리그는 투수가 타격을 하지 않고 지명타자 제도를 채택하고 있어 투수 대신 지명타자가 들어가면서 9명이 배출된다. 

실버 슬러거는 지난 80년 배트 제조회사인 ‘루이빌 슬러거’의 힐러리치와 브래즈비가 창안해 만든 상으로 메이저리그 감독과 코치가 자신의 팀 선수를 제외한 나머지 선수에게 투표해 수상자를 가리게 된다. 

수상자에게는 실물 크기의 루이빌 배트가 부상으로 주어지는데 이 배트에는 연도와 해당선수의 타격성적, 이름, 포지션이 새겨져 있다. 은색으로 만들어 실버 슬러거라 부른다. 

실버 슬러거는 순수하게 타격 성적만으로 수상자를 선정하기 때문에 메이저리그 감독과 코치가 투표로 순수하게 수비력만으로 포지션별 수상자를 선정하는 ‘골드 글러브(Gold Glove)’와 대비된다. 

골드 글러브는 글러브 제조회사인 ‘롤링’사가 시상의 주체인데 지난 1957년부터 수상자를 배출했다. 반면 실버 슬러거는 지난 1980년부터 시상을 시작했다.
