분단 50년만에 처음으로 남·북 정상이 손에손을 잡고 평화무드를 조성하고있는 한반도와는 달리 민족간 끊임없는 반목과 질시로 언제 터질지 모르는 화약고 같은 발칸반도.

발칸의 맹주 유고와 91년 유고연방에서 독립한 인구 198만의 소국 슬로베니아가 '한판 전쟁'을 벌였다. 
 
이름하여 '축구전쟁'. 
 
14일새벽 벨기에 샤를루와의 스테이드 커뮤널 스타디움. 
 
'유로2000' C조 예선을 치르기위해 그라운드에 나선 양국 선수들의 표정엔 비장감마저 감돌았다. 
 
경기는 예상되로 치열했다.양국이 저지른 파울만 47개. 

초반 주도권은 예상외로 슬로베니아가 잡았다.슬로베니아는 전반 23분 자호비치(29.그리스의 올림피아 코스)의 헤딩슛으로 선취골을 뽑았다. 상승세를 탄 슬로베니아의 공세는 폭풍우 처럼 거셌다. 후반 7분 자호비치의 프리킥을 파블린이 헤딩슛으로 연결,점수차를 벌인 슬로베니아는 5분후 자호비치가 자신의 두번째 골까지 성공시키며 3-0으로 앞서 승리를 굳히는 듯 보였다. 

그러나 후반 15분 유고의 미하일로비치가 경고누적으로 퇴장당하면서 경기양상은 급변하기 시작했다. 

 개막직전 "대표팀이 너무 느리고 구닥다리스타일의 플레이를 하고 있다"며 맹비난, 유고 대표팀을 내분으로 몰고갔던 미하일로비치. 공교롭게 그의 퇴장은 숫적 열세까지 더해진 유고선수들의 위기의식을 일깨워 단합을 이끌어냈다. 3실점 할 동안 그렇게도 손발이 안맞던 유고의 조직력은 순식간에 되살아났다. 
 
후반 22분 밀로셰비치(27.스페인 사라고사)의 만회골을 신호탄으로 25분 드룰로비치(32.포루투갈의 포르투), 30분 다시 밀로셰비치의 골이 잇달아 터졌다. 불과 5분만에 3골을 따라붙어 3-3 동점을 만든 것 이다. 축구에서 팀워크가 얼마나 중요한 것 인지를일깨워 주는 순간이었다. 
 
그러나 양국은 이후 소득없는 소모전만을 벌이다 결국 3대3 무승부로 경기를 마감했다. 
 
90분간의 축구전쟁을 끝내고 일시적인 휴전에 들어간 유고와 슬로베니아. 그러나 휴전은 장기화 될 가능성이 높다.왜냐하면 양국 모두 결승에 진출해야만 다시한번 '한판전쟁'을 벌일 수 있기 때문이다. 
 

"It was a great game and we could have won in the end," said Yugoslavia's veteran coach Vujadin Boskov after an emotionally-charged match. "My players thought it would be easy, that the points would come from heaven." 

Boskov's men looked down and out after talismanic playmaker Zlatkho Zahovic had led Slovenia to a seemingly unassailable 3-0 lead with two goals. 

But second-half substitute Savo Milosevic did likewise to bring Yugoslavia back again after Lazio star Sinisa Mihaljovic had been sent off. 

"This shows that the game of soccer is played until the last minute," said Yugoslav striker Darko Kovacevic. 

"Ironically we played much better with ten men," the Juventus star said. "We managed to pressure them with ten men to the crucial point. It is better tan losing." 

Slovenia began its first ever match at a major competition in positive style and within four minutes Zeljko Milinovic shot just wide with a thundering free kick. 

European teams' reluctance to play Yugoslavia had denied Boskov's side matches against high quality opposition had quickly showed. 

The Slovenes knocked the air out of the two-time European championship runnerup in the 23rd minute, when Zahovic sneaked through the napping Yugosla defense and met a perfect cross from Amir Karic with a diving header from 12 meters (yards) out. 

Boskov dropped veteran Dragan Stojlkovic, who made his European Championship debut as a teenager in 1984, but within 35 minutes he brought on the 35-year-old midfielder in an attempt to arrest his team's awful start. 

Meanwhile Slovenia, which split from the former Yugoslavia after a brief war in May 1991, was looking to surprise the skeptics who said it lacked the class for Europe's premier competition. 

In front of a half-full 29,000-capacity stadium at Charleroi, Slovenia continued to create problems on Yugoslavia's right flank, where the inexperienced Ivan Dudic was struggling badly. 

Before half-time Karic and Saso Udovic combined superbly to create a clear opening for Zahovic, but his sharp shot produced a great reflex save from Ivica Kralj. 

Before half-time Yugoslav fans castigated their team with shouts of "shame on you," but things quickly got worse. 

In the 52nd minute, another header seemingly sealed Yugoslavia's fate. Zahovic's curling freekick was met by a glancing header from Miran Pavlin which was again out of Kralj's reach. 

Adding insult to injury, defender Mihajlovic nonchalantly passed a ball straight to Zahovic, who was totally unmarked, and the Slovene star immediately buried the ball past the luckless Kralj. 

Thousands of Slovene fans cheered the name of Zahovic, who scored nine goals in Euro 2000 qualification and has now struck 23 goals in 46 international matches. 

Showing every which way of its worst side, Yugoslavia was own to 10 men when the frustrated Mihaljovic shoved an opponent into the ground without the slightest provocation just three minutes later. 

"Sinisa was very nervous. He couldn't stand the result because he is not used to losing like that at Lazio," Boskov said. 

Boskov wasn't so understanding at the time, slamming his hands into the side of the dugout in frustration. Yet, amazingly, everything changed from then on. 

Substitute Milosevic of Real Zaragoza got a goal back in the 65th minute when he tapped in a cross from Miroslav Djukic, while the Slovenes were appealing that the ball had crossed the back line. 

Ljubinko Drulovic made it a game again, drilling home a cross from Predrag Mijatovic four minutes later. 

Slovenia, which recently lost 3-2 in France after going two goals ahead, was suddenly on the ropes. 

In the 72nd minute, Milosevic made the recovery complete when he was again totally unmarked in the center to connect to a pass from Drulovic. 

It was a remarkable comeback not least because Yugoslavia had a low morale after injuries and open criticism of Boskov had wracked any sense of teambuilding among the collection of stars. 

"If someone had offered me a 3-3 draw before the match I would have taken it with both hands but in this case we are disappointed," said Slovenia's coach Srecko Katanec, who once played under Boskov at Sampdoria. "We actually lost the match." 

"Even at 3-0 I wasn't sure of victory because I saw my players stop on the pitch suddenly. This is a lesson," he said. "There is no celebration in my dressing room." 

Despite his pair of goals, Milosevic was down at the end of the match. 

"The first hour was the worst of my life," he said. "If we play like this against Norway, they are going to score seven." 
 

시작부터 고전하리라는 예상과 달리 슬로베니아는 전혀 위축됨 없는 경기로 자신감 있는 적극적인 플레이를 전개했고 반면 유고는 전반 초반 계속되는 슬로베니아의 적극 공세에 다소 당황해하는 기미를 보였다. 

첫골은 의외로 쉽게 터졌다. 전반 22분 슬로베니아의 칼리치가 프리킥 해준 볼을 슬로베니아 축구의 영웅 자호비치가 뛰어들며 헤딩으로 성공시키는 순간 유고의 관중석엔 일순간 침묵이 감돌았다. 

이어지는 슬로베니아의 주도적인 공격. 전반 슬로베니아는 좌측의 루도니아와 칼리치가 적극적인 공간 플레이를 펼쳐주며 분위기를 주도해 갔고 플레이 메이커로 나선 파블린의 원활한 연결 역시 돋보였다. 또한 전방에 배치된 우도비치와 자호비치의 적극적인 문전쇄도가 측면으로부터의 연결과 맞아떨어지면서 유고 진영을 쉽게 교란시킬 수 있었다. 

반면 유고는 초반부터 우측 공격을 주로 시도했지만 데얀 스탄코비치의 부진한 플레이와 롱패스 위주의 부정확한 볼 마무리가 계속되면서 공격의 흐름을 스스로 끊는 결과를 낳았다. 

결국 유고는 스탄코비치를 빼고 미드필드에서 플레이를 조율할 수 있는 노장 스토이코비치를 투입하면서 분위기 반전을 꾀해 보지만 전반은 이렇다할 효과를 거두지 못한다. 

후반 들어 안 풀리는 게임에 신경이 사나와진 유고 선수들은 거친 플레이로 일관했고 슬로베니아는 앞선 상황에 전력상 객관적인 열세를 보이는 팀들이 보통 택하게 되는 수비 위주의 역습 전략 대신 유고의 공격에 전반과 변함 없는 적극 대응으로 임하는 모습을 보인다. 

이는 이미 페이스를 잃은 유고 진영을 더욱 힘겹게 만들게 되고, 후반 시작한지 단 7분만에 슬로베니아는 추가 골을 성공시킨다. 자호비치의 오른쪽 페널티 에어리어 정면에서의 프리킥을 파블린이 헤딩으로 골네트를 갈라 단숨에 스코어는 2대0. 그러나, 여기서 그치지 않았다. 유고의 베테랑 수비수인 미하일로비치가 골키퍼에게서 받은 볼을 패스하는 순간 페널티 아크 정면에서 이를 가로채기한 자호비치가 침착하게 골문 안쪽을 노려 순식간에 스코어는 3대0. 

또한 2분뒤 엎친 데 덮친 격으로 감정을 주체하지 못한 미하일로비치가 슬로베니아 공격수를 넘어뜨리면서 퇴장을 당하면서 슬로베니아의 생각지 못했던 완승이 기대되는 순간이었다. 

하지만 이때부터 위기 의식을 느낀 유고의 무차별 공세가 시작된다. 숫적열세에도 불구하고 다급해진 유고는 점차로 미드필드에서 볼키핑력과 기동력이 살아나면서 기회를 만들어 가기 시작했고 미하일로비치의 퇴장은 어느새 팀에 새로운 응집력을 불러일으키는 전화위복의 계기가 되었다. 

한편 슬로베니아로서는 유고의 이런 상승세에 다소 주춤하는 모습을 보이면서 동시에 체력과 집중력의 저하를 드러내며 유고의 적극적인 공세에 긴장하는 모습이 역력했다. 

이 기회를 놓치지 않고 유고는 노장 유고비치, 스토이코비치의 활발한 볼 배분과 드룰로비치의 좌우 측면 돌파, 후반 교체 투입된 밀로세비치의 정확한 위치 선정이 빛을 발하면서 21분과 28분 단 7분 사이 3골을 만회하는 무서운 저력을 보여준다. 

슬로베니아는 후반 막판 정신을 차리고 다시 한번 반전을 노리며 몇 차례 찬스를 맞이하기도 하지만 후반 중반까지 활발히 활약했던 카리치와 파블린 등과 교체해서 들어온 아시모비치, 파블로비치, 오스테리치 등의 활약이 기대에 못 미치면서 결국 아쉬운 무승부에 만족하고야 만다. 

하지만 결과적으로 유고와 슬로베니아의 경기는 축구 경기에서 기술과 체력에 앞서 정신적인 요인이 얼마나 중요한 승리의 관건인가 하는 것을 아주 극명히 시사해준 경기라 할 수 있다. 

후반 중반까지 놀라운 조직력과 이길 수 있다는 자신감으로 승리 문턱까지 갔던 슬로베니아가 한순간 동점을 허용하며 무너진 데는 체력과 기술의 문제를 거론하기에 앞서 막판 뒷심부족이라 할 수 있는 집중력 와해의 문제를 들 수 있다. 

또한 뒤집어 숫적 열세의 위기 상황에서 터져 나온 유고 선수들의 경기에 대한 의지와 자신감 또한 높이살 수 있었던 경기였다. 

모쪼록 유럽 축구의 변방 격인 포르투갈, 노르웨이, 슬로베니아 등의 선전은 보는 이들에게 축구가 가져다줄 수 있는 최고의 감동을 선사해 주고 있음에 틀림없다.
