Costinha costs Romania
'Brazil of Europe' advances on last-minute goal

ARNHEM, Netherlands (AP) -- A header by late-substitute Costinha in the sixth minute of injury time gave Portugal a hard-earned 1-0 win over Romania Saturday and a place in the quarterfinals of Euro 2000.

After a stodgy and colorless 90 minutes, it was Portugal's FC Barcelona star Luis Figo who set up the winner. In a free kick from some 30 meters (yards) three minutes into injury time, Figo lobbed the ball high for Monaco midfielder Costinha to knock past Romania's 'keeper Bogdan Stelea, who was badly caught off his line.

The goal sent the tens of thousands of Portuguese fans ecstatic and left the Romanians stunned and helpless.

"It was a good game. A game of patience, a very tactical game," said Portugal's coach Humberto Coelho. "Romania was a very hard team to beat. It is a difficult team with very experienced players."

After thrilling the tournament with its dramatic defeat of England, Portugal looked as if it would have to settle for a 0-0 draw.

For a game that pitted the so-called "Maradona of the Carpathians" -- Gheorghe Hagi of Romania, against "Europe's Brazilians" promising attacking soccer, it turned to be a drab affair with the Romanians stifling Portugal's free-flowing game and offering little in return.

Portugal set the European Championship alight Monday when Figo, Rui Costa and Joao Pinto dazzled England to turn a 2-0 deficit into a famous 3-2 win.

Romania drew 1-1 against Germany in its opening bout.

England and Germany played in Charleroi, Belgium, late Saturday.

In front of some 22,000 fans at the Gelredome stadium in this eastern Dutch town, Portugal went forward from the start and in the fifth minute Nuno Gomes sent a low drive wide of the goal while, three minute later, defender Fernando Couto tried a blast from just outside the box.

But Portugal was not given half the room the English side had allowed it in the opening mach, with the Romanian defense and midfield fighting fiercely for every ball and committing fouls whenever necessary.

By midway through the first half the game was giving signs that it was going to be a long slog. By the 22nd minute, Romania had three yellow cards including one for star player Hagi which axes him from the side's final game against England.

Portugal's star Luis Figo, also got sanctioned in the 30th minute for shirt pulling.

But while Figo could be seen one minute on the right, the next on the left, back and then forward, Galatasaray's veteran Hagi stayed on the right using minimum energy.

After 60 minutes he looked spent although coach Emerich Jenei let him ride the full 90 minutes.

In the first half, Hagi had just one attempt at toward goal, a rising long-range attempt which curled past the far right top corner that created little danger.

His second shot came in the 64th minute when he thundered the ball into the stands from some 10 meters (yards), rousing cheers from his country's fans.

Playing much more aggressively, Romania's first close effort came in the 18th minute when Romania's Ajax winger Cristian Chivu dashed down the left flank and centered the ball for Adrian Ilie who had it taken from his feet by Vitor Baia.

The game then ran dry of serious attempts on goal virtually until the four minutes into the second half when Portugal's Dimas chanced a volley from half way into the Romanian half but the ball soared high into the crowd.

With Figo tightly marked and Rui Costa not commanding from the midfield as had been expected the Portuguese caused little trouble for the Romanians. Their next effort came in a weak 70th-minute header by substitute Ricardo Sa Pinto following a neat cross from Couto.

Romania's Viorel Moldovan sent shudders through the Portuguese fans when his header off a corner kick was barely cleared away in the 51st minute. Cosmin Contra fire a shot from the right wing that Baia was stretched to palm over the crossbar.
