첫골은 전반4분경 빨리 터졌다. 아크 오른쪽 30m에서 슛이 수비수 맞고 나오자 기다렸다는 듯이 ‘스페인 신성’ 라울의 왼발 터닝슛. 
 
경기주도권을 잡은 스페인은 빠른 패스에 의한 측면돌파와 공간패스를 구사하며 공세를 펼쳤으나 전반 추가득점엔 실패. 
 
후반 13분. 스페인의 기습적인 오프사이드 함정을 뚫고 슬로베니아 골게터 자호비치가 동점골을 터트리자 분위기는 순식간에 반전하는듯 했다. 
 
승패의 갈림길인 후반14분. 스페인은 곧바로 이어진 반격에서 맨티에타가 수비수 3명을 제치며 살짝 밀어주자 엣세베리아의 오른발 강슛이 골키퍼와 골포스트 사이를 뚫으며 2-1로 다시 앞서 나갔다. 
 
슬로베니아는 후반 중반이후 골을 만회하려 총력전을 펼치며 몇차례 득점 찬스를 잡지만 골키퍼 이바노비치 선방에 막혀 끝내 무릎을 꿇었다. 

이날 골을 추가한 슬로베니아 골잡이 자호비치(28·그리스 올림피아코스)는 3골로 득점선두에 나섰다.

Spain took the lead with a fourth-minute goal by Real Madrid ace Raul Gonzalez. But after that, the match slumped until the 59th minute when Slovenia's Olympiakos star Zlatko Zahovic knocked in an equalizer only to see Etxeberria slapping in a second for Spain a minute later. 

"We beat a good team," was Spanish coach Jose Antonio Camacho's first comment after the game. Asked if he was upset on seeing Slovenia tie the game 1-1, Camacho answered: "I suffer in every game." 

The result left Spain with three points in Group C and Slovenia with one. Norway, which defeated Spain in the first game, played Yugoslavia later Sunday. 

Raul, 22 and reputedly the world's best-paid player following the signing of a new bumper contract, took the ball at the edge of the area with his back to the goal and swiveled to fire a left-footed shot to the top left-hand corner. 
 
"It was my first goal and I hope it won't be my last," said Raul, who was constantly trying to fire Spain's engines. 

"We are confident, but not only now but also going into the game that we would win," said Raul. "We still need one win because we hope to get six points." 

The goal raised hopes that Spain had rediscovered the scoring talents it displayed in the qualifying round. But it was not to be. 

In the 13th minute Alfonso Perez capitalized on a defensive error and broke through to the edge of the box but fired wide. 

But that was Spain's last serious effort at goal until a minute before the break when Raul tried a left-footed volley inside the area but the ball flew well wide of the far right post. 

Slovenia -- which gained independence at the start of the '90s and is playing its first European championships -- was a pale shadow of the side that went 3-0 up against Yugoslavia but which then had to settle for a 3-3 draw. 

It did, however, show itself to be a more than worthy participant in the tournament and in the second half put up a valiant fight. 

"I have to congratulate Spain for the two goals scored and I wish them good luck. But there was no element of the game in which Spain was better than us," said Slovenia coach Srecko Katanec. 

Katanec criticized Spain's performance. 

"I saw Spain in the first game and again today and they did not impress me," the former player said. "Every team in this group can have problems ... but Spain plays a very difficult game next against Yugoslavia. It's difficult to say who is favorite now." 

Camacho blamed his side's stupor on the excessive number of games the players had had to play at club level, especially those from Real Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona who reached the semifinals of the European Champions League with Madrid taking the cup. 

"Now we have three day to recuperate from the 85 games the players have behind them," Camacho said. 

Spain came into the tournament bracketed among the favorites following its top scoring record in the qualifiers and the success of its clubs in continental play. 

Slovenia's first shot at goal did not arrive until the 31st minute when left winger Mladen Rudonja -- who caused problems throughout for Spain -- had an attempt barely deflected wide by a Spanish defender after a breakthrough run from the opposite flank by Djoni Novak. 

Two minutes later Rudonja had another shot that sailed high over the goal. 

The oppressive evening heat turned the ultramodern enclosed Arena stadium into a sweltering hothouse. At one end, some 5,000 Slovenia fans formed a sea of white and green behind one of the goals, easily outnumbering and outshouting their Spanish counterparts at the opposite end. 

As the match wore on, the Spaniards seemed to take a siesta and with the Slovenians short on creative moves the match became increasingly scrappy with fouls at every turn. 

The Slovenians tried to gather momentum toward the end of first half and came closest to equalizing in the final moments when Rudonja broke free on the left forcing Spanish 'keeper Santiago Canizares to dash from his goal and make a clearance But seconds later Rudonja was back in the area and Canizares had to dive fast to clutch the ball following a close-range shot. 

Both sides came back a little refreshed in the second half and Raul teased with a header from the edge of the penalty zone that went narrowly wide. 

But Slovenia quickly brought play to the other end and Abelardo was forced to make a clearance to the sideline following yet another dangerous cross from Rudonja. 

The left winger then wreaked havoc in the 59th minute when he raced past Michel Salgado and fired a low cross for Zahovic to get his foot to. 

Canizares, who first went the wrong way, was unable to keep ball from bouncing into the goal. 

But the Spaniards, who for most of the first half appeared lifeless, wasted no time in retaliating and a minute later Gaizka Mendieta sent the ball deep into the area for right winger Joseba Etxeberria to connect with and fire beneath the diving body of Dabanovic.

유고 전에서의 멤버를 그대로 고수한 슬로베니아는 지난 경기 우도비치와 나란히 배치되었던 자호비치를 미드필드 쪽으로 처지게 배치하면서 다소 조심스런 경기를 펼쳤고, 스페인은 소속팀 발렌시아에서 주로 우측 미드필더로 나서는 멘디에타를 좌측에 포진시키고 지난 경기에 출장치 않았던 중앙 수비수 아벨라르도와 골키퍼 카니자레스를 기용하는 변화를 보였다. 

지난 노르웨이와의 경기 패배로 반드시 승리해야하는 입장의 스페인과 유고 전 선전에 고무된 슬로베니아의 경기는 초반 의외로 쉽게 승부가 갈리는 듯했다. 

초반 길고 짧은 패스의 적절한 배분으로 경기의 흐름을 주도해 나간 스페인은 경기 시작 4분만에 아크 정면에서 에체베리아의 슈팅이 수비수에 맞고 굴절된 볼을 스페인의 희망 라울이 지체 없이 달려들며 슈팅한 것이 정확히 골문 안쪽 모서리에 꽂히면서 손쉬운 경기를 예상케 했다. 

이후에도 과르디올라의 노련한 공수 조절에 힘입어 스페인은 경기의 흐름를 주도해 나갔다. 

왼쪽 윙백 아란사발의 활발한 공격 가담이 연결의 활로가 되어지는 가운데 공격시 적절한 공간 점유와 좌우에 편중됨 없는 고른 볼 분할을 통해 슬로베니아 수비진을 어렵게 만들었고, 반대로 수비에선 수비진의 효과적인 위치 선점에 의해 길목 길목 상대 공격진의 공격 루트를 차단하는 노련함을 보이기도 했다. 

그러나 전반 후반 스페인이 공격의 고삐를 늦추면서 분위기는 슬로베니아 쪽으로 넘어가게 된다. 

초반 스페인 공격진의 개인기를 활용한 빠른 볼 처리와 노련한 수비진의 밀착마크에 고전했던 슬로베니아는 패싱력이 살아나면서 페이스를 회복하는 모습을 보여준다. 

스페인의 타이트한 방어 벽을 뚫기 위한 스피디한 공격 시도는 칭찬해 줄만 했지만 이어지는 마무리 패스에서의 정확성이 아쉬운 부분이었다. 

반면 수비에서는 스페인의 개인기에 고전하던 초반과 달리 수비벽을 두텁게 세우면서 숫적 우세를 발판으로 스페인 공격진을 묶는 방법이 주효하면서 경기의 흐름을 대등히 끌고 갔다. 

그런 가운데 경기는 후반으로 이어지고 스페인은 다득점을 노리는 대신 수비에 더욱 역점을 둔 경기 운영을 펼치며 역습을 노린다. 

그렇지만 과르디올라의 중앙에서의 돋보이는 볼 배급이 마무리에 가서는 숫적으로 부족한 공격진의 민첩한 대응이 이루어지지 않고 번번히 슬로베니아 수비에 차단 당하면서 경기의 흐름은 지루하게 이어지고 만다. 

그러던 후반 12분. 스페인은 오히려 슬로베니아에 일격을 당한다. 

미드필드 중앙 왼쪽에서 스페인의 오프 사이드 함정을 교묘히 무너뜨린 패스 웍에 의해서 루도니아가 찬스를 잡고 왼쪽 측면을 치고 올라가다가 반대편으로 길게 크로스 해준 볼을 문전 앞에 있던 오스테리치와 자호비치가 엉키면서 자호비치의 발에 맞은 볼이 네트 안쪽으로 흐르면서 순식간에 동점이 되는 상황을 맞이하고 말았다. 

하지만 스페인의 반격 또한 만만치 않았다. 

좌측으로부터 중앙을 파고들던 멘디에타가 빠르게 반대편으로 스루패스 해준 볼을 오른 쪽을 파고들던 에체베리아가 보기 좋게 슈팅. 결국 승부에 쐐기를 박고 만다. 

이후 스페인은 더욱 수비에 집중하고 간간이 주어지는 역습 찬스에서는 잦은 패스의 남발로 스스로 슈팅 기회를 무산시키는 무의미한 공격을 일삼고 만다. 또 전 후반 내내 별다른 활약을 보이지 못한 발레론 대신에 후반 32분경 두드러진 활약을 펼쳐주었던 과르디올라를 교체한 부분은 카마초 감독의 조금은 납득이 가지 않는 선수 기용이라 할 수 있었다. 

한편 슬로베니아는 스페인 역습 시에 기동력을 이용한 커버 플레이로 차단한 후 카리치와 루도니아 등을 활용한 활발한 좌측 돌파를 시도했다. 하지만 끝내 스페인의 골문을 여는데는 실패하고 말았다. 

그렇지만 동점골 상황에서 보여준 상대의 오프 사이드 트랩을 역이용한 지능적인 부분 전술은 슬로베니아 공격의 돋보이는 부분이라 할 수 있었다. 

종합하자면 초반 쉽게 선취골을 얻으면서 대량 득점을 노릴 것으로 예상되었던 스페인의 소극적인 경기 운영이 개인 기술에서 상대적으로 열세였던 슬로베니아로 하여금 자신감을 갖고 추격할 수 있는 빌미를 제공하는 꼴이 된 경기였다. 

앞선 경기와 오늘 경기를 놓고 보았을 때 우승 후보로 점쳐지던 스페인의 전력은 일단은 공격력에서 그 문제점을 내포하고 있다고 볼 수 있으며 스피디하고 조직적인 움직임이 그 중 가장 아쉬운 부분이 아닐까 싶다.
