top Denmark 3-0, reach quarterfinals
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- The Dutch survived some early alarms before
cruising into the quarterfinals of the European Championship with a 3-0
beating of Denmark on Friday, taking World Cup-holder France with them
and knocking the Danes and the Czech Republic out.
The Danes, also beaten 3-0 by France, should have pulled a goal back, but Michael Schoenberg fired a penalty wide in the 80th minute. The result put the Dutch and the French jointly top of Group D with
six points while the Danes and the Czechs have none and are the first two
teams to go out. France and the Netherlands meet in Amsterdam on Wednesday
to decide who finishes top of the group and plays the runner up in Group
C in the quarterfinal.
Rijkaard had been critical of his team's apparent inability to show the same will and determination as other teams in the championship but said he couldn't fault them this time. "When you're 0-0 at half time and you finish 3-0, you can only be complimentary to the players," he said. For the Danes, who had been pegged as the most likely team to get knocked out of the Group of Death, the defeat was still deflating. "It's difficult to smile now," said Danish coach Bo Johansson, visibly crestfallen. "We now know we aren't good enough. "We did not hold up throughout the second half. The Netherlands are better than we are, no doubt." Kluivert, scorer of the opening game, admitted that Rijkaard's pre-match words galvanized the team. "We're very satisfied and the criticism from Rijkaard before the match was a challenge for us," Kluivert said. "It showed we can make it as a team. The 1-0 goal freed us. I hope people won't criticize us anymore after this game. we're improving." The Danes made things difficult for the Dutch in the early stages with crunching tackles and physical play although it was two home players, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Reiziger who were cautioned in the first 10 minutes for fouls. The Danes almost went ahead in the 24th minute when Morten Bisgaard broke down the left, beat Edgar Davids, and crossed low into the area. Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar failed to hold the ball, and Bisgaard's follow up shot was blocked by fellow Dane Allan Nielsen. Then it was Dutch team's turn to miss a chance. Kluivert fired in a left foot volley which Peter Schmeichel blocked diving to his right, and the ball rolled clear. Marc Overmars got to the loose ball but, with the 'keeper grounded, he slid the ball the wrong side the post. Danish forward Jesper Groenjaer was unlucky to fire into the side netting after a determined run three minutes into second half and the Dutch were beginning to look frustrated by the time they went ahead in the 58th minute. Dennis Bergkamp, who had been well policed by the Danish defense, collected the ball on the edge of the area, pushed it past two defenders and chased for it with Schmeichel advancing off his line. The Sporting Lisbon and former Manchester United standout 'keeper did well to block the Arsenal striker's shot. But the ball rolled clear to Kluivert, who aimed the follow-up shot low past Schmeichel from the edge of the area and just inside the post with his left foot. The Dutch sent on Ronald de Boer for Overmars, who is just getting back to fitness after injury, and the midfielder netted the second only five minutes after coming in. Zenden broke down the left and sent over a low cross and De Boer arrived unmarked at the far post to tap in with the Danish defense watching Kluivert. Aron Winter replaced Bergkamp in the 76th minute and the Dutch went further ahead two minutes later, thanks to an amazing burst by right back Michael Reiziger. The powerful defender, who also plays for Barcelona, charged 40 meters with the ball at his feet and past a tiring Danish defender before pulling the ball back to the unmarked Zenden. The midfielder had time to wait for the ball to roll onto his favored left foot before he lifted it into the net. The Danes should have pulled a goal back in the 80th minute when a huge clearance from Schmeichel eluded Dutch defender Bert Konterman. Van der Sar charged off his line to deal with it and clattered into Ebbe Sand, giving away a penalty. Sadly for the Danes, Schjoenberg fired a meter wide of the post from the spot with his left foot. "It was the same against France," Johansson said in reference to his team's dominant performance early in its match against France before surrendering after their opponents opened the scoring. "As long as it was 0-0 we were okay and tried to attack. "But once we were down, the power goes away and you forget to think." 네덜란드와 덴마크의 D조 예선 2라운드 경기. 네덜란드는 지난 체코 전에서 이렇다할 활약을 보이지 못한 세도르프를 기용하는 대신 왼쪽에 오베르마스와 오른쪽에 젠덴을 배치시키면서 스피디한 좌우 측면 공격에의 의지를 엿보게 했다. 또한 소속팀 아스날에서와 마찬가지로 베르캄프를 클루이베르트 뒤쪽에 내려 포진시키면서 미드필드에서의 플레이를 도모하는 역할을 하도록 한 것이 특징적이었으며 그밖에 체코 전에서 눈 부상을 입은 스탐을 빼고 중앙 수비에 콘테르만을 투입시킨 것도 지난 경기와 다른 점이었다. 전반 네덜란드는 그들 특유의 유기적인 플레이와는 전혀 동떨어진 플레이로 일관했다. 빠른 발을 가진 오베르마스와 젠덴을 활용한 좌우 측면 돌파를 기대했지만 예상과 달리 이들이 컨디션 난조를 보이면서 이렇다할 공격의 활로를 찾지 못했다. 대신 미드필드 중앙으로부터의 코쿠의 긴 패싱 연결에 의한 침투 공격을 노려보지만 이 또한 상대 골키퍼 슈마이켈의 빠른 판단력에 의한 노련한 선방에 막혀 별 재미를 볼 수 없었다. 덴마크는 전반 초반부터 미드필드에서의 파워풀한 집중 수비를 펼치면서 네덜란드 공격진의 패스미스를 유도해 그들의 공격활로를 적절히 차단하는 한편, 수차례 산드, 그론케어 등의 활발한 좌우측면 돌파가 성공하면서 내용 면에서 네덜란드에 그다지 밀리지 않는 모습을 보였다. 또한 덴마크의 골키퍼 슈마이켈은 롱드로인이나 정확하고 긴 골 킥을 통해 직접 역습을 시도하는 이채로운 모습까지 보이면서 덴마크 공격의 시발 역할을 해주기도 했다. 후반에 들어서도 네덜란드는 잦은 패스미스와 무거운 몸놀림으로 위협적인 공격과는 거리가 먼 플레이로 일관한다. 하지만 경기 양상이 180도 뒤바뀌는 데는 그리 긴 시간이 필요치 않았다. 전반과 달리 플레이가 다소 살아나는 듯한 모습을 보인 다비즈의 공수 연결이 빛을 보기 시작하면서 고대하던 첫 골이 완성된다. 후반 12분 자기 진영에서 다비즈의 연결로 시작된 역습 찬스에서 베르캄프의 클루이베르트와의 콤비네이션 플레이를 통한 골키퍼와 일대일찬스에서의 슈팅이 슈마이켈의 선방에 막혀 리바운드 되고 이를 클루이베르트가 침착하게 오른발 인사이드로 구석을 찔러 선취골을 성공시켰다. 선취 득점이후 네덜란드는 내내 부진했던 오베르마스를 로날드 데 부르와 교체하고 젠덴을 원래 자리인 왼쪽 윙으로 포진시키면서 네덜란드 공격은 그 위력을 되찾게 된다. 짧고 빠른 패스 연결이 살아나면서 공격의 방향전환도 좋아졌고 무엇보다도 젠덴을 활용한 좌측 돌파는 경기가 끝날 때까지 덴마크에겐 가장 큰 위협이었다. 두 번째골 역시 이런 젠덴의 발끝에서 이어졌다. 후반 21분 계속해서 좌측을 맘놓고 휘젖고 다니던 젠덴이 반대편으로 길게 땅볼로 크로스 해준 볼을 쇄도하던 로날드 데 부르가 가볍게 성공시켜 이미 전세는 네덜란드 쪽으로 기울었음을 보여주었다. 또한 32분에는 센터 서클로부터 클루이베르트의 절묘한 스루패스를 받은 라이지허가 40미터 가량을 질주한 뒤 노마크 상황에서 젠덴에 내준 볼이 또다시 골네트를 가르면서 승부는 후반초반의 예상과 달리 너무도 쉽게 갈리고 말았다. 반면 덴마크는 후반 선취골을 내준 이후 네덜란드의 계속되는 스피디하고 조직적인 공세에 페이스를 잃으면서 결국 무너지는 모습을 보였는데 중앙 수비수들의 상대 최전방 공격수에 대한 마크가 느슨해지면서 수비수간의 간격이 넓어졌고 이에 조직력과 패싱력을 되찾은 네덜란드가 그 공간을 파고들면서 여러 차례 찬스를 맞이하게 되었다. 첫 실점이후 공격력이 뛰어난 토프팅을 기용하고 그론케어가 비스가르트와 포지션 스위치를 하면서 활로를 모색해 보았지만 문전에서의 마무리 능력이 부족했고, 공수를 조율해 줄만한 키플레이어가 없었다는 것이 지난 프랑스와의 경기에서와 마찬가지로 가장 큰 약점으로 작용하면서 특징과 변화 없는 공격을 일관할 수밖에 없었던 이유로 보아진다. 게다가 후반 어렵게 얻은 페널티킥마저 실축하는 무기력하고 실망스런 경기력을 보이고 말았다. 다만 그 가운데 슈마이켈의 뛰어난 판단력과 민첩한 방어능력에 의한 선방 정도만이 위안 삼을 수 있었던 부분이 아닌가 생각된다. 하지만 경기 전반을 살펴볼 때 이번 대회 가장 유력한 우승후보로 꼽혔던
네덜란드가 지난 체코 전에 이어 덴마크와의 경기에서 보여준 경기력역시도
많은 축구 팬들의 기대와는 다소 차이가 있었다는 것을 시인하지 않을 수 없을
것이다.
