막판 뒷심을 발휘한 루마니아는 1승1무1패(승점4)로 포르투갈 (3승· 승점9)에 이어 2위로 8강에 올라 오는 25일(이하 한국시간) A조 1위인 이탈리아와 4강티켓을 놓고 물러설 수 없는 일전을 펼친다. 

본선 1회진출 기록이 유일한 루마니아는 21일(이하 한국시간)벨기에 샤를루와 코무날 스타디움서 열린 예선리그 A조 최종전에서 후반43분 가네아(26·슈투트가르트)의 극적인 페널티킥 골로 잉글랜드에 3대2 재역전승을 거뒀다. 
 
반면 '축구종가' 잉글랜드는 거의 다잡은 8강 티켓을 수비수 필립 네빌의 어이없는 태클로 페널티킥을 허용, 아깝게 예선 탈락하는 비운을 맛봤다.

경고누적으로 출전을 못한 하지(35·갈라타사라이)가 관중석에서 경기를 본 이날 선취골은 루마니아가 먼저 잡았다. 

루마니아는 전반중반까지 신예 키부와 일리에의 화려한 공격을 앞세워 주도권을 잡아 잉글랜드 문전을 위협하다 22분 키부의 왼쪽 센터링이 골키퍼를 넘어 왼쪽 골대를 맞고 들어가는 행운을 잡은 것. 

반격에 나선 잉글랜드는 전반40분 아크 중앙에서 잉스가 패널티킥을 얻어 시어러가 성공시켰다. 이어 전반 루스타임때 스콜스의 패스를 받은 오웬이 스텔레 골키퍼까지 제치며 2-1 역전골을 터뜨렸다. 
 
루마니아는 후반3분 오른쪽 센터링을 마틴 골키퍼가 쳐낸 공이 약하자 문테아누가 기다렸다는듯이 왼발 터닝슛이 터져 골네트를 흔들었다. 스코어는 2-2. 

경기가 무승부로 기울던 후반43분 아크 오른쪽서 치고들어가던 몰도반이 수비수 필립 네빌의 태클로 페널티킥을 이끌어내 가네아가 침착하게 차넣으며 대어를 낚았다. 
 
이로써 A조에서는 지난 대회 우승팀 독일과 `축구의 종가' 잉글랜드가 모두 탈락하는 이변이 연출됐다. 
 

Manchester United defender Phil Neville hauled down Viorel Moldovan wide on the right and Swiss referee Urs Meier pointed to the spot. Ganea sent goalkeeper Nigel Martyn the wrong way and the Romanians arched into the last eight along with Group A winner Portugal. 

"Of course I am devastated," England coach Kevin Keegan said. "We did not play well enough but with five minutes to go I thought we could hang on to something. But it was not to be." 

"We've spent three matches chasing the football. We got into a position of being 2-1 up but we never played as well as we can. We have to ask if we can pass it better and control a game. The answer in this tournament is sadly we couldn't." 

Romania, looking by far the better side in the opening stages, had taken a 22nd minute lead through Cristian Chivu. But two goals in the space of five minutes at the end of the first half from Alan Shearer and Michael Owen gave England the initiative. 

But a rasping volley from Dorinel Munteanu after a blunder by goalkeeper Nigel Martyn leveled the scores just after halftime. And the late penalty sealed it. 

England, back in action for the first time since being threatened with expulsion from Euro 2000 due to fan violence, made one change, with Martyn a late replacement for David Seaman who injured his left leg minutes before kickoff. 

The Leeds goalkeeper was soon in action when Martin Keown conceded a free kick on the edge of the area in the opening minute. Valencia's Adrian Ilie struck the free kick firmly past the wall but Martyn dived to his left to palm the shot away expertly. 

But Martyn was beaten in the 22nd minute when England failed to clear a right wing corner and Chivu collected the ball on the left, floated in a cross to the far post. Moldovan was well placed and unmarked for a free header but he wasn't needed because the ball struck the inside of the post and bounced in. 

The threat of expulsion seemed irrelevant for the first 30 minutes as, England, needing only a draw to progress, was comprehensively outplayed, its midfield and defense struggling to cope with Romania's incisive passing and movement off the ball. 

Romania made light of the absence of its most influential player, captain Georghe Hagi, who was suspended. 

Romanian coach Emerich Jenei said Hagi's absence -- he is retiring from international soccer after Euro 2000 -- had inspired his players. 

"I thank my team because they were very confident and able to qualify. Because Hagi was absent, they tried to make up for it. We showed today we are a good team. The penalty was not a penalty -- it was a present." 

While victory meant Hagi will prolong his career by at least one more game, England's defeat brought the curtain down on Shearer's international career. As the final whistle went, the Newcastle United striker, whose penalty was his 30th goal for his country in 63 appearances, held his head in his hands. 

Midfielder Paul Ince said he hoped Shearer would reconsider: "You never know about that," he said. "He was one of he better players of the tournament." 

Ince also said he hoped Keegan would continue as England coach. "He wants us to win and we want to play for him." 

Munteanu said the team thoroughly deserved the victory because of the number of scoring opportunities it created. 

"We played well," he said. "We played to win and we got a lot of chances to do that." 

Keegan had demanded that his players' improve their possession. But they were again left chasing the game. England's two 33-year-old midfielders, Paul Ince and Dennis Wise, were shown up for a lack of creativity, and failed to stamp themselves on the game. 

Romania constantly posed England problems, with its two fullbacks pushing up into midfield to support quick attacks. England's only invention came through Manchester United pair David Beckham and Paul Scholes. 

But the game swung in England's favor when Romanian center back and stand-in captain Gheorghe Popescu went off injured after 31 minutes with a ruptured calf muscle. 

A Shearer penalty, after a foul by Chivu on Paul Ince, leveled the game five minutes before half time. Only seconds remained of first half injury time when Owen edged England in front. 

Scholes nudged the ball forward and Owen was left to race clear with the Romanian defense claiming offside. Goalkeeper Bogdan Stelea raced off his line but Owen pushed the ball past him and rolled it into an empty net. 

But Munteanu then made it 2-2 with a 20-meter (yard) strike in the 48th after Martyn had needlessly punched the ball straight to him. 

There appeared no real danger when the 'keeper left his line and decided to punch the ball away above one of his own defenders. It went straight to Munteanu just outside the England area and the midfielder wasted no time in chesting the ball down and volleying powerfully past the stranded Martyn into an empty net. 

During a flurry of substitutions, England sent on the burly Emile Heskey for the smaller Owen to try and unsettle the Romanian defense. With 15 minutes left, another attacking midfielder, Nick Barmby came on for Wise on the left. To shore up the middle, defender Gareth Southgte came on as England desperately held on for a point. 

The late defeat was a cruel blow for Keegan's camp, capping a disastrous three days when events on the field were overtaken by violence off it. 

Keegan, saying his players would be devastated if thrown out of the competition, had urged the fans to behave -- and his message seemed to have been heeded. Fans spent the afternoon drinking in Charleroi's main square, mingling peacefully with small groups of Romanian fans, drinking beer and dancing in fountains. 

Thousands of English fans had tickets for the Romania end, and although separated by a thin line of stewards, both sets of fans caused no trouble. The fans behaved impeccably before the game and inside the stadium during the game, while the president of the English Football Association, the Duke of Kent, was sitting in the VIP area. 
 

이 경기서 무승부만 거두어도 8강 진출이 확정되는 잉글랜드에 반해 반드시 승리를 거두어야 하는 절박한 상황에서 경기에 임한 루마니아는 초반 좌우 윙백들인 콘트라와 치부의 활발한 공격 가담 덕택에 측면 쪽의 공격이 활기를 보인다. 

동시에 중앙 쪽에서 하지를 대신해 투입된 무투의 가벼운 몸놀림과 어울려 초반 경기의 페이스를 그들 쪽으로 이끌어 나가는데 성공한다. 

잉글랜드는 수비에 역점을 둔 경기 운영을 벌인 탓도 있겠지만 전체적으로 자기 진영에서 미드필드를 쉽게 내주는 모습을 보여주는데 이는 이번 대회 내내 보여준 그들 전력의 약점 가운데 하나였다. 

수비형 미드필드로 나서 제 역할을 다 해주지 못한 인스, 공격 쪽에 치중하며 수비 가담에 약점을 드러내는 스콜스, 그리고 앤더튼이 빠진 왼쪽 공백에 마땅한 선수가 없다는 것과 베컴이 개인기와 몸싸움이 능한 미드필더가 아니라는 등의 여러 가지 미드필드에서 나타난 문제점이 그들을 어렵게 만든 요인으로 꼽을 수 있는 것들이다. 

전반 22분 드디어 루마니아가 기다리던 첫 골이 터진다. 문전 혼전 중 흘러나온 볼을 치부가 페널티 에어리어 왼쪽 터치라인 부근에서 센터링한 볼이 자기 선수에 연결되기도 전에 골포스트를 튕기면서 골라인 안쪽을 넘어선 것이다. 

이에 다급해진 잉글랜드는 공세의 고삐를 당겼고, 39분 지난 두 경기에 비해 다소 플레이가 살아난 듯한 인스가 문전 안쪽을 파고드는 순간, 루마니아 수비진의 파울이 선언됐고 페널티킥을 쉬어러가 침착하게 성공시키면서 경기는 다시 잉글랜드의 의도대로 진행되는 듯 했다. 

전반 로스타임에 루마니아 수비진의 오프사이드 트랩을 뚫고 전진하던 오웬이 골키퍼 스텔레아를 감각적인 볼트래핑으로 따돌리면서 역전골을 성공시켜 2대1. 

전반 동안 잉글랜드는 선제 골을 내준 뒤 동점골에 이어 역전골까지 성공하긴 했지만 그들의 공격은 이전 경기와 비교했을 때 달라진 것은 없었다. 

부진한 좌측 공략에 비해 오른쪽 측면의 베컴의 긴 센터링에 지나치게 의존하는 모습을 보이는가 하면, 공격시 매양 같은 템포의 공격을 일삼으므로써 상대 수비의 대응을 쉽게 만들어 주었다는 점이다. 

또 비기기만 하면 된다는 식으로 득점이 앞선 상황에선 너무 안일하고 소극적인 플레이를 고집했던 것도 그 중 하나다. 

후반이 시작되면서 경기 양상은 또다시 돌변했다. 시작 3분만에 잉글랜드 진영 우측에서 센터링된 볼이 골키퍼 마틴의 펀칭 미스에 의해 문테아누 정면에 떨어졌고 이를 정확히 키핑한 문테아누가 다시 골문을 갈라 상황은 원점으로 돌아왔다. 

잉글랜드는 정신을 가다듬은 듯 좌우 윙백들을 공격 가담 횟수를 늘리고 긴 롱패스에 의한 방향 전환을 시도하며 루마니아 진영을 공략하고자 한다. 

하지만 문전에 도달하는 패스 역시 이렇듯 길고 단조로운 톤으로 이어지면서 루마니아 수비진을 뚫지 못하고, 막바지에 다다르면서는 체력을 소진한 오웬을 스피드가 좋은 헤스키와 교체 투입하면서 그와 베컴의 롱패스에 의한 콤비 플레이를 노리자는 식의 지나친 행운에 기대를 걸면서 또다시 지켜보겠다는 듯 수비에 치중하고 만다. 

한편 루마니아의 공격 역시도 단조롭기는 마찬가지였다. 하지만 굳이 다른 점을 발견하자면 그들은 긴 패스와 짧은 패스를 적시에 활용하면서 공격의 효율을 높였다는 점이다. 수비 진영이나 미드필드에서 좌우 측으로 내주는 패싱은 길고 투박한 반면, 문전 중앙 쪽으로 투입되는 패스의 선은 비교적 세밀하고 정교했다. 

바로 이 차이가 후반 승부를 루마니아 쪽으로 기울게 한 요인이었다 해도 과언은 아니다. 후반 43분 페널티 아크 우측에서 우측면을 파고들던 몰도반에게 오픈 패스가 이어지면서 이를 저지하려 달려들던 필립 네빌의 반칙에 의해 잉글랜드는 끝내 돌이킬 수 없는 나락에 떨어지고 만다. 

후반 계속해서 문전 중앙 쪽을 노리던 공격 선을 말미에 가서 측면 쪽으로 적절히 배분한 것도 루마니아가 득점할 수 있었던 한 요인이라 할 수 있다. 

이렇게 해서 결과적으로 당초 A조에서 쉽게 8강에 오를 후보들로 지목되던 잉글랜드와 독일은 동반 탈락하고 마는 이변의 주인공들이 되고 말았다. 물론 이들의 탈락은 불운이 아닌 실력에 의한 탈락이라고 보는 것이 더 정당할 것이다. 

잉글랜드는 여러 부분에서 아쉬운 점을 드러냈다. 우선 앞서 글 시작 부분에서 지적했듯이 취약한 미드필드를 거론할 수 있겠고, 단조로운 공격 루트와 공격 템포 역시 문제점으로 꼽을 수 있을 것이다. 

그렇지만 유로 2000예선을 통해서도 드러난 것처럼 실력에 비해 과대 포장된 듯한 부실한 면모도 사실 인정하지 않을 수 없는 부분이라 생각된다.
