Azzuri down Sweden 2-1 for third straight win

EINDHOVEN, Netherlnds (AP) -- Alessandro Del Piero returned to the Italian starting lineup and fired the winner two minutes from the end in a 2-1 win over Sweden on Monday as already qualified Italy marched into the quarterfinal of Euro 2000 with three wins in a row.

The result ousted Sweden which had needed a win to stay alive.

Coach Dino Zoff rested a slew of mainstays after Italy's victory in Group B had already been assured and proved the rest of his group of 22 proved no pushovers either.

After withstanding some early pressure, Italy went ahead in the 39th minute in the simplest way. A swerving corner kick from Alessandro del Piero found Luigi Di Biagio unmarked in the penalty area and the shaven headed midfielder powered the ball past Magnus Hedman with his head.

Striker Hendrik Larsson finally gave the Swedish fans something to cheer for in the 77th minute when he gathered the ball following a defensive error by Di Biagio and ran the ball past Francesco Toldo to make it 1-1.

But Del Piero, who appeared as a substitute in the 2-1 win over the Turks and the 2-0 win over Belgium hit the winner in the 88th minute.

"I'm not really satisfied, because we suffered too much" Zoff said. "We hadn't the right tension in the first part of the match ... certainly Sweden pressed hard, because qualification was at stake for them, but we conceded too much."

But he singled out Del Piero for praise.

"Del Piero had an excellent performance tonight," said Zoff. "He deserves my compliments ... I have no doubt about Del Piero. I have other doubts."

Sweden came into the game desperate for three points after losing 2-1 against Belgium in its opening match and only pocketing a point from its dismal 0-0 tie with Turkey.

Zoff started with nine reserve players, including Del Piero, resting regular first teamers such as Francesco Totti, Stefano Fiore, Antonio Conte and Filippo Inzaghi.

The entire game was one of missed opportunities for Sweden. Italy attacked first but then settled back, saved energy and let the Swedes come at them.

Del Piero starred in the first attack of the game when in the fourth minute he chested down the ball on the left wing following a fine lob pass from Roma's Vincenzo Montella. Unbothered by Swedish defender Olof Mellberg at his side, Del Piero fired ball from the corner of the box just over the bar.

Played in the heavy evening heat before a near 30,000-capacity crowd at the Philps stadium, Sweden almost went one up in the 10th minute when Celtic's Johan Mjallby had a header cleared from the goal line by Italian midfielder defender Angelo Di Livio.

Moments later Yksel Osmanovski picked up on a neat heel pass by Celtic's Henrik Larsson into the area but had his 10-meter (yard) shot blocked by Mark Iuliano.

But it was in the 14th minute when Swedish fans' hearts soared and plunged when Arsenal's Fredrik Ljungberg received the ball on a clever downward header from Larsson and found himself with an open goal as Toldo dived too early but he fumbled the shot and the ball crawled wide of the far post.

Italy's had its second chance in the 18th minute when Montella ran the ball into the area virtually unchallenged but goalie Magnus Hedman had little trouble clearing the shot.

But Sweden were back on the attack seven minutes later, this time when Magnus Svensson took control of a loose ball in the box forcing Toldo to leave his line and save the ball to veer off the shot with his body.

Montella and Del Piero delighted the crowd with a one-two move in a packed Swedish box leaving Montella before goalkeeper Hedman but his cheeky chip just pipped the crossbar in the 28th.

Captain Paolo Maldini who took a bad knock on the knee midway through the game and was substituted by Alessandro Nesta just before the break.

The Swedes had initially come out into the second half looking sapped and allowing the Italians to play the ball more. Ciro Ferrara had a header from inside the goalmouth area saved by Hedman in the 57th minute.

In the 67th minute, Del Piero almost got a second goal when he slid along the ground in an attempt to connect with a low pass across the goalmouth by Lazio's Paolo Negro.

But then in the 70th minute Sweden missed yet another superb opportunity to score when in beautiful three-man move Ljunberg chipped the ball to the edge of the area for Larsson to head it behind him to captain Patrik Andersson whose shot from six yards (meters) was well miraculously blocked by Toldo.

Two minutes later Ljunberg had a area-edge bullet of a shot hit the left side netting.

Larsson finally gave the Swedish fans something to cheer for in the 77th minute when he gathered the ball following a defensive error by Di Biagio and ran the ball past Hedman to make the tie.
