| 터키, 벨기에 꺾고 8강합류
터키가 '붉은 악마' 벨기에를 꺾고 2000년 유럽축구 선수권대회 8강에 합류했다.
터키는 1승1무1패(승점 4)가 돼 파죽의 3연승을 거둔 이탈리아(승점 9)에 이어 조 2위를 차지, 준준결승에 안착했다. 터키가 8강에 오른 것은 유럽선수권대회 사상 최초의 사건. 지난 5월 유럽축구연맹(UEFA)컵 결승에서 갈라타사라이가 패권을 차지한 이후 1개월만에 '투르크 전사들'이 유럽을 다시 강타한 것으로 이번 대회 최대의 파란을 연출했다. 이미 2승으로 8강진출이 확정됐던 이탈리아는 네덜란드 에인트호벤에서 열린 스웨덴과의 경기에서 델 피에로의 후반 결승골로 2-1로 승리했다. 홈 그라운드의 이점에다 견고한 미드필드를 가동한 벨기에가 에밀 음펜자의 화려한 공격으로 초반 주도권을 잡은 반면 터키에는 '영웅' 수쿠르가 있었다. 국내 프로리그에서 3년연속 득점랭킹 1위를 차지한 수쿠르는 0-0 팽팽한 긴장이 계속되던 전반 47분께 미드필드 왼쪽에서 날아온 볼이 페널티지역을 한번 맞고 높이 튀어오르자 골 지역 앞으로 솟아오르며 헤딩 슛, 벨기에 GK 데 빌데를 제치고 결승골을 터뜨렸다. 벨기에와의 역대 전적에서 2무2패, 단 한 차례도 이겨보지못한 징크스를 깬 순간이었다. 벨기에는 음펜자가 닐리스와 짝을 이뤄 몇차례 득점을 시도했으나 굳게 닫힌 터키의 골문을 열지 못했고 경기종료 4분여를 남기고 GK 데 빌데까지 퇴장, 영패의 수모를 당했다. 터키는 앞선 후반 25분 미드필드를 짧은 패스로 통과하다 하프라인부근에 놓인 벨기에의 오프사이트 덫을 뚫고 오른쪽 측면을 돌파한 뒤 반대쪽으로뛰어들던 수쿠르가 다시 1골을 추가, 2-0으로 달아나 상대의 추격에 쐐기를 박았다. 네덜란드와 함께 이번 대회를 공동개최한 벨기에는 1승2패(승점 3)에 불과,
조 3위에 그쳐 스웨덴(승점 1. 1무2패)과 함께 탈락했다.
유럽선수권(유로2000) B조예선 마지막 경기에서 터키가 개최국인 벨기에를 2-0으로 꺾고 8강에 진출하는 쾌거를 이뤘다. 하칸 수쿠르는 선제골에 이어 쇄기 추가골로 '붉은 악마' 벨기에 격파의 선봉장 역학을 톡톡히 했다. 2골로 개최국인 벨기에의 2라운드 진출을 좌절시킨 하칸 수쿠르는 터키 최고의 스타. 유로2000 예선전에서는 4골밖에 기록하지 못했지만 그는 현재 유럽 최고의 스트라이커 중 하나. 1971년 터키에서 태어난 수쿠르는 사카랴스포르에서 스트라이커로써의 경력을 쌓기 시작해 부르사포르를 거쳐 갈라타사라이SK로 이적한다. 특히 공중볼에 강한 그는 터키 전대 미문의 골게터로 갈라타사라이에서 4시즌동안 무려 85골을 기록했다. 지난 세 시즌을 터키리그 득점왕으로 마쳤고 98/99 시즌에는 34경기에서 32골을 기록하여 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 그는 갈라타사라이에서 무려 5번의 리그 타이틀을 차지했으나 해외진출만큼은 성공적이지 못했다. 그는 95년 이탈리아 세리에A의 토리노 칼찌오로 이적해 데뷔경기에서 한 골을 기록했으나 결국 적응하지 못하고 5경기만에 갈라타사라이로 돌아왔다. 그를 향한 수 없이 많은 비판이 쏟아졌지만 그는 사태를 잘 추스려 다시 최고의 자리에 올랐다. 그는 갈라타사라이가 유럽에서도 선전하는 데 결정적인 역할을 했다. UEFA컵에 참가한 갈라타사라이는 리즈 유나이티드와의 준결승 2차전에서 수쿠르의 골에 힘입어 결승행을 확정, 터키 팀으로는 처음으로 유럽 클럽 대항전에서 결승에 진출하는 '역사'를 이룩했다. 열정적이고 경쟁에서 지기 싫어하는 그는 터키 대표팀에게 자주 '유럽의 스타일을 만들어나가는 것'의 중요성에 대해 말했었다. 갈라타사라이와 유럽에서 가진 경험들에 비춰볼 때 수쿠르는 이번 유로2000 대회에서도 이를 실현시키기 위해 노력할 것이다. 장신을 이용한 공중볼에 능하고 움직임이 빠른 그는 상대수비의 표적이자

 It was the
first time a host nation did not make it past the first round and Turkey's
first-ever win in a European championship.
On the stroke of half-time, Hakan Sukur finally showed why he is Turkey's star, chasing a high-bouncing ball and, with perfect timing, rising above outjumping bumbling Belgian golie Filip De Wilde to head the ball into the Belgian nets. It was his first worthwhile action in Turkey's three Euro 2000 games, but it counted for gold. "Now we want to get to the semifinal and, perhaps, the final," Hakan Sukur said "With his height and his timing, he did us in," said Belgian coach Robert Waseige of the 1.91-meter Galatasaray striker. Turkey will play Portugal in Amsterdam on Saturday with a semifinal place at stake. Hakan Sukur's header was the coldest of showers on the hottest of nights for the Red Devils fans among the 50,000 crowd in the King Baudouin stadium and the Turkish players celebrated as if they had already won. "Now we silenced our critics," Hakan Sukur said. For Belgium, it only got worse. Absorbing increasing pressure, Turkey went on a liberating break in the 70th minute from the brink of off-side and Hakan Sukur, showing steely nerves buried the ball deep in the net past De Wilde. De Wilde was sent off in the 83rd minute after he torpedoed Arif Erdem into the ground when both were chasing a long ball. Defender Eric Deflandre finished as Belgium's goalkeeper, highlighting a nightmarish end for Belgium. In the other Group B game, Italy beat Sweden 2-1 in Eindoven, the Netherlands. Italy topped Group B with nine points ahead of Turkey with four. Belgium had three and Sweden one. "You cannot argue with mathematics," said Waseige. The Red Devils had enough with a scoreless draw, but they immediately went looking for a goal. They didn't realize they would outrun themselves in a hothouse where temperatures reached into the high 20s C (low 80sF). "We started better and didn't deserve to lose," said Waseige. In the second minute, Bart Goor passed from the left wing into the path of the pacy Emile Mpenza, but the Schalke 04 striker botched his hot instead of passing to the unmarked Luc Nilis in the center. A minute later, Mpenza got a second shot in, but again it went wide. Turkey was all over the place and in the fifth minute, Nilis ran straight through the defense but his angled right-foot drive was well saved by Rustu. In the 14th minute, Belgium again came close when a slightly deflected shot shaved the outside of Rustu's far post. Add another spectacular bicycle kick of Marc Wilmots which was blocked and the Red Devils had a half dozen chances in a dozen and a half minutes. It would come to cost them dearly. Turkey, despite needing a win to stand a chance of advancing just hung back in defense and played panicky soccer. Up front, the Turks could not stitch together two serious passes. Hakan Sukur was far too isolated to have an impact on the game early on. Their first counter came in the 21st minute but the shot from Tugay Kerimoglu was blocked. Spaces opened up and Nilis almost took advantage in the 30th minute with a 20-meter (yard) shot, but again, it just went wide. The match became a seesaw battle with both sides now creating opportunities. Hakan Sukur stopped a high ball on the penalty spot, but the onrushing Okan Buruk only got hold of part of the ball and this excellent opportunity also went wide. In the 36th minute, Arif Erdem was clean through, but De Wilde pulled off a brilliant save, kicking the ball wide with his foot with his body already committed the other way. After Hakan Sukur had scored, Belgium came looking for the equalizer with even more fervor n the second half. In the 54th minute Nilis found Mpenza unmarked in the center but the striker's whiplash header pulled a stunning reaction save from Rustu. Mpenza had another open header a few minutes later. It was not to be Belgium's night. Referee Kim Milton Nielsen strained a thigh muscle in the 40th minute and had to be replaced by Austria's Guenther Benko.
