Injury time goals send Spain into quarterfinals

BRUGES, Belgium (AP) -- Two goals in injury time clinched a dramatic 4-3 victory for Spain over Yugoslavia on Wednesday earning both sides berth in the quarterfinals of the Euro 2000.

Losing 3-2 after 90 minutes, Spain looked to be on the way home. But Spain won a penalty call and Gaizka Mendieta slotted home a 3-3 equalizer. After seven minutes of added time, Alfonso Perez turned the game on its head when he left-footed the winner for Spain.

The result left Spain top of Group C with six points followed by Yugoslavia and Norway with four. Because the Yugoslavs had beaten the Norwegians, who tied 0-0 with Slovenia in Arnhem, Netherlands, they qualified on the head-to-head result rule.

In an electrifying see-sawing game, Yugoslavia took the lead in the 30th minute with a hit by Savo Milosevic. Spain then equalized in the 38th with a goal by Alfonso.

Yugoslavia came out razor sharp after the break and second half substitute Dejan Govedarica pelted the ball to top of the net in the 50th minute. But Spain was not to be outdone and hit back with a cheeky chip by fellow second half substitute Pedro Munitis moments later.

In the 76th minute Slobodan Komljenovic netted what appeared to have been the winner when, in a goalmouth scramble, he managed to get his left foot to the ball in mid-air and slip in No. 3.

Then came the latest of late fightbacks by Spain with the Mendieta penalty and Alfonso's second strike.

"We came here to win this game," said Spanish coach Jose Antonio Camacho. "We could have won in the 15th, 20th, 30th or final minute. We won it in the last minute. That's football."

"Sitting on the bench, there were only two minutes left and the boys told me we still have a chance. They were right," said Camacho. "We had many goal opportunities. It would have been unjust if we didn't win."

Camacho said he hoped to meet France in the final as it was the world champion.

Wednesday's game was the best Spanish performance of the tournament when it finally appeared to have found some of the class and flair that had earned it a tag of favorite.

"It was a great party with many goals and much emotion," Alfonso said. "It was worth it at the end. We're going to keep our feet firmly on the ground despite the euphoria we're feeling now.

"After the second goal I thought of all the satisfaction of all the people in the stands and in Spain," said the Betis striker, whose teammate, Barcelona's Josep Guardiola was equally euphoric.

"This is the most important match I have ever played," said Guardiola, a key Spanish midfielder. "This shows that in football the difference between heaven and hell is in one minute."

Yugoslav goalkeeper Ivica Kralj, who made several good saves to deny the Spaniards, was thankful that his team made it to the last eight after such a late fright.

"The most important thing is that we reached the quarterfinals, the top eight teams in Europe," he said. "The good thing is that we are scoring many goals and the bad thing is that we are conceding many."

Spain lost its first match 1-0 against Norway and only narrowly scraped by Slovenia 2-1. Yugoslavia drew 3-3 with Slovenia and then defeated Norway 1-0 in its first two games.

Spain missed many chances to score throughout the high-paced match.

But Yugoslavia broke out to score a well-worked goal in the 31st minute helped by an injury to Spanish defender Michel Salgado at the other end.

With Salgaldo hobbling and out of position, Dejan Stankovic began the move with a cheeky backheel in his own half and the ball was switched quickly out to Ljubinko Drulovic on the left. The FC Porto midfielder had plenty of time and room and picked out the unmarked Milosevic in the middle to power home a close range header.

The lead lasted eight minutes before the Spaniards hit back to equalize.

Raul twisted into a shooting position 22 meters (yards) out and, although he was tackled as he was about to shoot, he managed to hold onto the ball. He was getting his left foot ready to shoot when Alfonso appeared at his shoulder and fired firmly past Kralj from the edge of the box.

As Spain continued to make chances, Raul had a firm first-time shot blocked by the 'keeper and, as Mendieta closed in for the rebound, he was brilliantly tackled by Miroslav Djukic.

Valencia forward Mendieta then set up another chance for Spain when his leftwing cross found Real Madrid's Raul unmarked at the far post but the striker was unable to make contact with the cross as he stretched his right leg.

Then Sergi made a fast run down the left and sent over a stunning cross only for Joseba Etxeberria to shoot wide of the far post.

When the second half opened, it was the Yugoslavs who nearly went ahead when Milosevic dribbled through the defense on the right and pulled the ball back for Drulovic who fired too high from the edge of the area.

Seconds later Govedarica showed him how it should be done after Drulovic had cut in from the right and rolled the ball back to him and the Belgian-based midfielder struck a right footed shot into the roof of the net.

With the Yugoslav fans still celebrating, Spain drew level again when Munitis, who was a second half replacement for Salgado, collected a right wing cross from Etxeberria and curled a left foot shot in off the inside of the left post from the edge of the area.

Yugoslavia's fortunes plunged in the 63rd minute when defender Slavisa Jokanovic was sent off for collecting a second yellow card. Playing a much more aggressive game, the team picked up a total of five yellow cards.

In the 79th minute Alfonso dribbled the ball through the Yugoslav defense but had a goalmouth shot well blocked by goalkeeper Ivica Kralj.

Spanish keeper Santiago Canizares was penalized in 68th minute for handling ball after the referee harshly ruled a defender's interception was a back pass but Mihajlovic missed a superb opportunity of taking a third goal lead earlier when he pounded a 12-yard (meter) shot wide to the right.

The 10 men of Yugoslavia were forced to soak up Spanish pressure but still managed to go ahead in the 75th minute when they were awarded a free kick 25 meters from goal.

Mihajlovic fired in the kick and the Spaniards, unable to clear the ball, left Komljenovic unmarked at the far post and the defender forced the ball home.

The Spaniards applied even more pressure and Kralj had to make great saves, tipping over a lob from Josep Guardiola and then blocking a close range shot from Alfonso.

The Spaniards ere furious that they weren't given a penalty two minutes from the end when Nisa Staveljic upended Etxeberria inside the area only for the referee to rule it was outside.

But they were awarded a spot kick when Abelardo was fouled inside the six-meter box and Mendieta's spot kick brought the two teams level at 3-3.

Then the Spaniards threw everyone forward and, when the ball rolled clear to Alfonso, he fired in a left foot shot for a dramatic winner.
