Dutch down France to finish 3-0 in group play

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- The Dutch held on to home advantage for the rest of Euro 2000 Wednesday, beating France's reserve squad 3-2 in a high-profile game between teams which already qualified for the quarterfinals.

With a festival of good goals, the final first-round game set up co-host the Netherlands against Yugoslavia in Sunday's quarterfinal in Rotterdam. World champion France will meet Group C winner Spain in Bruges, Belgium.

The result gave the Dutch three wins out of three and nine points in Group D. France finished second with 6 points. The Czech Republic beat Denmark 2-0 to end with three points. Denmark finished with zero points and goals.

"It was really important to finish first," said Dutch captain Frank de Boer, who scored with a blistering freekick. It allows the team to stay in the Netherlands and avoid Spain.

Dutch coach Frank Rijkaard was especially happy his team showed the grit to come back from a 2-1 deficit.

"They continued to believe in a good outcome. They managed the tension well," he said.

France, fielding only Marcel Desailly as an established starter, immediately got going and was 1-0 up after eight minutes.

Midfielder Robert Pires spotted Christophe Dugarry totally unmarked in the goalmouth and his precision corner only needed a routine flick of the head from the Bordeaux striker to give the French the early advance.

The Dutch, however, would not let a B-side, even one from France, run over them.

In the 14th minute, Patrick Kluivert beat the off-side trap, darted around a returning defender and finished off his run with a right-foot drive into the far corner and outside the reach of Bernard Lama.

France again went ahead on a corner. Pires's kick was cleared but it came out to Sylvain Witord, who fired from 20 meters (yards) through a maze of legs. On the edge of the goal area, David Trezeguet gave it the smallest of deflections and goalie Sander Westerveld was beaten again.

The spectacular game at the ArenA stadium was far from over, to the delight of the 50,000-crowd.

Dutch captain De Boer put the sides level again in the 51st minute with a freekick from 35 meters (yards), which went swerving past the wall with such ferocious force that, even though Lama got a hand to it, he could not divert it from its path.

With the Oranje fans warming up again, the Dutch continued to push forward and even Westerveld got in on the act.

The Liverpool goalkeeper's far clearance in the 59th minute found Boudewijn Zenden running into space and the speedy utility man beat Lama with a low drive in the near corner.

So far all Dutch goals in the tournament have been scored by Barcelona players.

Since qualification for the quarterfinal was already assured, both teams kept any player with a yellow card or injury threat firmly on the bench.

Dutch midfielder Ronald de Boer was sidelined after suffering a recurrence of an old groin injury. De Boer reinjured himself during closed training Tuesday evening at the Dutch camp in Hoenderloo. Overall, the Dutch still fielded eight regulars.

The French pushed caution to extremes, keeping 10 regular starters on the bench, including stars Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Fabien Barthez.

So the game which had been billed as an early final turned into little more than an entertaining exhibition game.

Apart from the goals, there was plenty of action.

In the 23 minute, Zenden created space on the left and crossed into the center where Bergkamp half volleyed it onto the bar, beyond the grasp of a flailing Lama.

On the half-hour mark Pires spotted Westerveld off his line and from the halfway line, his looping freekick had the Liverpool goalie scurrying back to tip the ball over his bar.

Off that corner came France's second goal.

Still some player got nervous enough to get yellow cards.

Dugarry got a yellow card for a high charge on defender Artur Numan -- an ugly incident in an otherwise extremely fair match.

Dugarry could have put the game away just after half-time when he eluded the faulty Dutch off-side trap again, but this time Westerveld made a great save, parrying the low shot of Dugarry with his feet.

In the 75th minute, Trezeguet went on the run, but Westerveld parried his shot with a diving save.

It was enough to secure victory.

Netherlands -- Sander Westerveld; Paul Bosveldt, Jaap Stam, Frank de Boer, Arthur Numan; Boudewijn Zenden, Edgar Davids, Phillip Cocu, Marc Overmars; Dennis Bergkamp, (77 Aron Winter), Patrick Kluivert (60, Rob Makaaj) .
