| European Nations' Cup - Spain
1964
Again the competition was run on a knockout basis, again there
was a moment of political drama, as Greece refused to play Albania, with
whom they had officially been at war since 1912. Elsewhere, Denmark reached
the semi-finals by overcoming Malta, Albania and (after a play-off) Luxembourg,
who had earlier defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in Rotterdam, their last away
win against European opposition until 1995.
![]() This time all British Isles countries except Scotland took part. England
crashed out, losing 5-2 in Paris in Alf Ramsey's first match as manager.
Meanwhile Spain were held 1-1 at home by Northern Ireland and had to recall
their top players from abroad to win 1-0 in Belfast, Francisco Gento's
goal making the difference between elimination and hosting the finals.
In the 1964 final tournament, they were kept apart from the holders, the
same Soviet Union whom the Franco government had given a walkover four
years earlier.
