| European Football Championship
- Italy 1968
A change of name was matched by alterations to the structure, the knockout system replaced by a series of qualifying groups that has been in place ever since. One of them consisted of two back-to-back British Isles' Home Championships, from which England, by now the World champions, came through despite a famous 3-2 defeat by Scotland at Wembley. In the return, in front of the biggest crowd for any European Football Championship match, 130,711 at Hampden Park, they drew 1-1 after Celtic FC¢¥s John Hughes had missed an open goal from two metres out. But England hit top form in the quarter-finals. After a very late 1-0
win at Wembley, they recovered from a goal down against Spain to win 2-1
in Madrid and eliminate the reigning champions. The other semi-finalists
were the inevitable Soviets, the usual set of skilful Yugoslavs, who had
thrashed France 5-1 in the quarter-finals - and the Italians, who had recovered
from the trauma of losing to North Korea in the previous FIFA World Cup.
Home advantage established them, rather precariously, as the favourites.
