지난대회 챔피언 프랑스는 14일 오전(한국시간) 포르투갈 리스본의 루스스타디움에서 벌어진 2004유럽축구선수권대회(유로2004) B조 1차전에서 인저리타임 3분 동안 펼쳐진 지네딘 지단의 원맨쇼에 힘입어 잉글랜드를 2-1로 꺾었다. B조 1위로 나선 프랑스는 무실점 행진을 1078분으로 마감했지만 A매치 19경기 무패행진을 이어가며 사상 첫 대회 2연패를 향해 순조로운 출발을 했다.

전광판 시계가 멈춰진 순간 점수는 1-0으로 잉글랜드의 우세. 루스스타디움을 가득 채운 6만5000명의 관중 가운데 절반에 가까운 3만여 잉글랜드 팬은 리스본에서 흥겨운 축제의 밤을 꿈꾸고 있었다. 승리의 예감으로 들떠 있던 그들의 표정이 딱딱하게 굳기 시작한 것은 그로부터 1분 뒤. 

후반 46분 프랑스의 클로드 마켈렐레가 골지역 오른쪽을 날카롭게 파고들자 수비에 가담한 에밀 헤스키가 태클로 위기를 모면했다. 그러나 ‘지단 존’으로 불리는 위험지역에서 프리킥을 내준 것이 끝내 화근이 됐다. 지단은 수비벽 왼쪽 위로 우아한 곡선을 그리며 날아가는 23m짜리 절묘한 프리킥으로 잉글랜드의 골망을 뒤흔드는 동점골을 터뜨렸다. 

2분 뒤에는 티에리 앙리가 스티븐 제러드의 백패스를 가로채 골키퍼 데이비드 제임스와 일대일로 맞서는 찬스를 잡았고, 다급해진 제임스는 앙리를 걸어넘어뜨려 페널티킥을 허용했다. 키커로 나선 지단은 특유의 모션으로 제임스를 완전히 속이며 왼쪽 골망을 뒤흔들었다. 4년 전 유로2000결승에서 이탈리아에 1-0으로 뒤지다 후반 인저리타임 때 실뱅 윌토르의 동점골과 연장전에서 터진 다비 트레제게의 골든골로 짜릿한 역전승을 거두며 전 대회 챔피언에 올랐던 장면을 다시 보는 듯했다. 

프랑스는 지단과 로베르 피레스가 각각 왼쪽과 오른쪽 날개로 공격을 조율하며 미드필드 싸움에서 우위를 지켰으나 단 한차례의 세트플레이에 선취골을 내줬다. 빅상트 리자라쥐의 파울로 얻어낸 프리킥을 데이비드 베컴이 오른발로 문전을 향해 띄웠고, 골지역 오른쪽에서 프랭크 램퍼드가 헤딩으로 깔끔하게 마무리했다.

후반 28분 잉글랜드의 불운이 시작됐다. 잉글랜드는 왼쪽 하프라인을 넘어서며 30여m를 단독 드리블로 돌파해 페널티킥을 얻었으나 베컴의 페널티킥은 방향을 잡고 왼쪽으로 몸을 날린 프랑스 골키퍼 파비앙 바르테즈의 펀칭에 가로막혀 완승 찬스를 날려보냈다.

한편 스위스와 크로아티아는 경고 9개가 난무하는 격전 끝에 득점 없이 비겼다.

England's players and management - plus supporters like myself - woke up on Monday morning thinking they had been having a bad dream. 
 
They really beat France 1-0, and those last couple of minutes were just a nightmare. 

Sadly this was reality, and England had to accept the fact that France had stolen a game from them that they had won. 

There is no other way to describe it - this really was a steal after what I felt was a very effective and impressive England performance.

I understand there has been heavy criticism of coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's substitutions back home, but I actually think he got them spot on. 

England needed fresh legs out there to combat wave after wave of French attacks in searing heat. 

Michael Owen had not been in the game much, but obviously the contentious one was Wayne Rooney. 

Rooney had just won a penalty with a blistering run, but maybe the feeling was that he was running out of steam or he might get himself into trouble. 

You certainly get a bit of everything with this boy, and the game against France was no different, but I would not make a great case to say Eriksson called that one wrong.

I think he was right. 

Lessons to be learned are that you simply can't give away free-kicks against France, or other class teams, in dangerous positions. 

As soon as it was awarded, myself and my BBC colleagues in the commentary box - as well as plenty of fans I suspect - thought Zidane would score. 

Of course Steven Gerrard made an error that led to Zidane's winner from the penalty, but you have to give credit to Thierry Henry, who read his intentions brilliantly. 

And of course you have to take your chances at this level, and England paid dearly for David Beckham's second successive penalty miss for his country. 
 
I felt very sorry for England's back four, who I thought were absolutely immense. France didn't create any real chances, and Henry's intervention for the penalty was his only serious contribution.

I thought Sol Campbell was fantastic - one clearing header in the second half was one I would have dined out on, going from his own penalty area to the half-way line - some defenders can't kick it that far. 

And Ledley King, whose inclusion I supported, was excellent alongside Campbell. England can take heart from this game once the disappointment subsides. 
 
Yes, they lost but they were not carved open or destroyed. 

The two centre-halves were just different class I felt. 

So England have taken a punch, but they have the chance to bounce back in their next two games, and after the result is put into context - and of course if they win against Switzerland and Croatia - they will look back on the France game as containing far more positives than negatives.

SANTO TIRSO, Portugal (AFP) - Robert Pires has more than a sneaking suspicion that he and his France teammates will meet David Beckham and company again in the Euro 2004 final on July 4.

France scraped past England in their Group B opener in Lisbon on Sunday night thanks to two impossibly late goals from Zinedine Zidane, and the way the draw is arranged Sven-Goran Eriksson's side could have a chance for revenge in under three weeks time.
 
Pires certainly thinks so.

"If England play like they did yesterday they can make it through to the final," the Arsenal forward said on Monday at the reigning champion's headquarters north of Oporto.

"They played really well. If Beckham had scored that penalty it would have been finished for us.

"They caused us problems. We were taken by surprise, we didn't expect them to play the way they did.
 
"It's not easy to come from one goal down against England."

Pires revealed that France coach Jacques Santini, who described England's performance as "remarkable", had given his players a key pep talk at half time.

"He told us to believe in ourselves - to open up the game."

France are next up against Croatia on Thursday.

"We've got two days to prepare for our next big match against Croatia - we're not looking any further than that just now," added Pires. 

Teammate Olivier Dacourt believed France won the epic battle thanks to a particularly English attitude.

"We always thought we could come back and win the game - 'fighting spirit' is an English experession and that's what we had.

"We came so close to catastrophe the joy of winning was enormous - the atmosphere in the dressing room afterwards was immense."

Zidane said he had swopped shirts with his Real Madrid teammate Beckham after the match.

"But that was all, I didn't speak to him, in times like that it's best to leave someone in peace," said the inspiration behind the French team.

He too reckons England won't be catching the plane home too early from the championships.

"That result enables England to stay in the race to qualify for the next stages," said Zidane.

But Santini, who moves back to club football with Tottenham after the Portugal party comes to an end, suggested the manner in which they lost could make life rough for Eriksson's men.

"Losing like that will have an effect on morale," he told the ppress conference.

The game turned after Fabien Barthez' saved Beckham's penalty, and Santini revealed: "I got the team to watch countless video tapes of Beckham and (Michael) Owen taking penalties.

"Beckham always hit them to the left, normally lower but always to the left."

아！ 그러나 허를 찌르는 반전의 드라마가 또다시 펼쳐질 줄이야. 승부는 끝나지 않았다. 잉글랜드의 거러드가 자기편 골키퍼를 향해 실책성 백패스를 하는 순간 거대한 드라마는 비로소 시작됐다. 90분 내내 상대팀의 압박에 말려 특유의 마술 같은 개인기를 보여주지 못했던 앙리가 비호처럼 볼을 향해 뛰어들었다. 당황한 GK 제임스는 반칙으로 그의 진군을 막을 수밖에 없었다.

결과는 페널티킥. 다시 키커로 나선 지단은 냉정한 발놀림으로 두번째 골망을 흔들었다. 불과 2분 사이에 일어난 일이었다. 벌어진 입이 다물어지지 않았다. 모두가 마찬가지였다. 프랑스 팬도, 잉글랜드 팬도.

◇응원도 ‘축구종가’

포르투에서 열린 개막전을 본 뒤 리스본으로 가는 기차 안에서 한 열혈 축구팬이 4개국 언어로 씌어 있는 메모지를 들고서 열차칸을 부지런히 오가고 있었다. 메모의 내용은 ‘잉글랜드-프랑스전의 티켓을 구합니다’였다. 하지만 알고보니 그는 특별한 사람도 아니었다. 리스본역에서 루스경기장으로 이동하는 동안 이런 팬들은 쉽게 만날 수 있었다.

경기장에 들어서니 이곳이 포르투갈인지 잉글랜드인지 분간이 안될 정도였다. 스타디움의 곳곳은 잉글랜드의 십자 깃발로 완전히 점령당해 있었다. 본부석 왼쪽에 몰려 있는 프랑스팬들은 상대적으로 왜소해 보였다. 마치 웸블리구장에서 벌어진 잉글랜드의 홈경기에 프랑스 원정 응원단이 와 있는 듯한 착각이 들었다. 잉글랜드 팬들은 경기 시작 전 프랑스 국가가 울려퍼질 때도 시끄러운 야유로 ‘근성’을 보였다. 장외에서 이미 열기는 뜨겁게 달아오르고 있었다.

◇곡선의 프랑스, 직선의 잉글랜드

두 팀은 나란히 4-4-2 포메이션으로 나섰지만 색깔은 확연히 구별됐다. 프랑스가 미드필드를 완벽히 장악한 뒤 자로 잰 듯한 패스로 땅을 따먹어갔다면 잉글랜드는 ‘킥 앤드 러시’ 스타일을 자주 선보이면서 성큼성큼 상대를 치고 들어갔다. 프랑스가 지단을 정점으로 묘한 곡선의 미학을 만들어냈다면 영국은 왼쪽 풀백 A 콜의 위력적인 오버래핑이나 최전방 공격수 루니의 저돌적인 돌파에서 연상되는 직선의 파괴력을 갖고 있었다.

지단과 비에라가 주고받는 패스는 ‘아트 사커’라는 별칭의 이유를 설명해줬다. 반면 스콜스나 램퍼드의 플레이는 힘은 넘치나 다소 투박한 느낌을 줬다. 곡선의 부드러움은 직선을 감싸안으며 전반 중반까지 우위를 차지했지만 잉글랜드의 반격은 역시 위력적이었다. 전반 38분 베컴의 프리킥을 램퍼드가 헤딩슛으로 연결하는 순간 루스경기장은 그대로 웸블리구장으로 바뀌었다.

◇기적의 드라마를 연출한 레 블뢰

전반에 앙리가 볼을 잡을 때마다 잉글랜드는 두세 명이 달려들어 강한 압박을 가했다. 오른쪽 사이드의 피레스가 측면을 공략하며 찔러주는 크로스는 번번이 잉글랜드의 수비수에게 잘렸다. 전세를 뒤집기 위해서는 변화가 필요하다고 생각했지만 자크 상티니 감독은 베스트11을 76분간 밀어붙였다.

후반 21분 피레스 대신에 스트라이커 요원 윌토르까지 동원했지만 잉글랜드가 수비에 치중하면서 벽은 더욱 뚫기 어려운 ‘철옹성’으로 보였다. 그러나 90분 동안 지켰던 잉글랜드의 1-0 우세는 결국 인저리타임 3분 만에 펼쳐진 프랑스의 대역전 드라마를 위한 전주곡에 불과했다.  

지단과 베컴 차이
 
‘유로2004’ B조 조별리그 첫 경기에서 마주친 프랑스와 잉글랜드의 라이벌 대결은 지네딘 지단이 왜 세계에서 가장 ‘위대한 선수’이고, 데이비드 베컴은 왜 가장 ‘유명한 스타’인지를 극명하게 보여준 한판이었다.

지단은 침착했고, 베컴은 화려했다. 지단은 영리했고, 베컴은 감각적이었다. 지단은 ‘중원의 지배자’라는 별명에 진정 어울렸고, 베컴은 ‘프리킥의 달인’에 합당했다. 마지막으로 지단은 조국에 다시 없을 극적인 역전승을 안겼고, 베컴은 또다시 잉글랜드 축구 역사에 남을 석패의 주인공이 되고 말았다. 

지단은 미드필드의 왼쪽에서 슬금슬금 가운데로 이동하면서 마치 거미줄을 치는 스파이더맨처럼 이러저리 공을 배급했다. 지단의 지휘 아래 프랑스는 전반 35분이 넘도록 주도권을 잡았지만 분명한 리드를 잡지 못했다. 확실한 것을 먼저 보여준 것은 베컴이었다.

그는 전반 38분 오른쪽 측면에서 얻은 프리킥을 오른발로 연결해 램퍼드의 선취골을 도왔다. 이 프리킥의 아름다운 궤적을 리플레이로 되풀이해보면 축구선수가 되고자 꿈꾸는 두 소녀의 이야기를 다뤘던 영화 제목의 의미가 새삼 다가온다. ‘베컴처럼 휘어차고 싶어요(Bend It Like Beckham).’ 전반이 끝난 뒤 전광판에는 이 프리킥이 반복 방영됐고, 그때마다 잉글랜드 팬들은 마치 골이 들어간 듯 소리를 질러댔다.

베컴은 확실한 승리의 주역이 될 기회를 먼저 잡았다. 후반 28분 웨인 루니가 얻은 페널키킥을 베컴이 찼다. 오른발로 밀어넣은 볼은 왼쪽으로 사선을 그리며 날아갔지만 GK 바르테즈가 쳐냈다. 두 팔을 활짝 벌리며 달려가는 특유의 골뒤풀이를 기대했던 잉글랜드 팬들은 침묵에 빠져들었다. 

지단도 시간이 흐르자 조금씩 초조해지는 듯했다. 성급하게 스스로 중거리슛을 날리는 모습도 보였다. 종료 직전 오른쪽에서 돌아가면서 왼쪽의 앙리에게 연결한 볼이 골로 연결되지 않았을 때는 아마 지단조차도 더 이상 희망을 품지 않았을지 모른다. 하지만 지단은 기적을 만들어냈다. 인저리 타임에 얻은 프리킥을 골로 연결시킨 뒤 앙리가 얻은 페널티킥마저 성공시키며 90분 동안 ‘졌던’ 경기를 단 3분 만에 뒤집었다. 지단은 ‘유로2000’ 준결승전에서 포르투갈을 상대로 역전 페널티킥을 성공시켰던 순간이 오버랩됐겠지만 아마 베컴에게는 98년 프랑스월드컵 아르헨티나전에서 퇴장당하면서 패배의 빌미를 줬다는 이유로 한동안 테러 위협까지 당했던 악몽이 떠올랐으리라.
