'빗장수비(카테나치오)'로 유명한 이탈리아는 철저한 협력수비를 통해 상대 공격을 무력화시킨 반면 덴마크는 힘의 우위를 바탕으로 격렬한 볼빼앗기 과정을 보여줬기 때문이다. 

이는 '늦추는 플레이(딜레이)'와 '개싸움(도그 파이트)'으로 비유할 수 있다. 이탈리아 수비수는 일대일 수비 때 2∼3m 간격을 두고 쫓아갈 뿐 함부로 볼을 빼앗으려 하지 않았다. 

조심스럽게 측면으로 몰고간 뒤 아군들이 합류해서 수적인 우위를 확보한 후에야 태클 등으로 볼빼앗기를 시도했다.

물론 위험지역에서는 가차없이 볼을 저지했지만 미드필드에서 수비수들과 수비형 미드필더 간의 전술적인 호흡은 역시 이탈리아 수비다웠다. 

반면 덴마크는 미드필드싸움에서 체력적인 면을 강조한 수비를 펼쳤다. 이탈리아 선수들이 볼을 지닐 때면 여지없이 볼을 빼앗기 위해 여러명이 달려들었다. 

축구에서는 이같은 싸움을 속칭 '개싸움'이라고 부르는데 잉글랜드 독일 등 '킥앤드러시' 전통이 여전히 남아 있는 국가들은 이같은 수비를 펼치고 있다. 

이탈리아 공격진이 주도권을 잡고 경기를 펼쳤음에도 덴마크 수비라인이 골을 내주지 않은 것은 어설퍼 보이면서도 상대를 강하게 위협했던 덴마크 수비가 일단 통했기 때문으로 분석할 수 있다. 

남유럽의 이탈리아의 효율성과 북유럽의 덴마크의 저돌성이 맞붙었던 이날 경기는 골이 없어도 이같은 이유로 흥미로웠다.

'이탈리아가 태극기 앞에서 또 한번 얼어붙었다.' 중국의 고대소설 <삼국지연의>에는 죽은 공명(제갈량)이 산 중달(사마의)을 물리치는 장면이 나온다. 제갈량이 죽었다는 소식을 듣고 촉나라를 치러 온 위나라의 사마의가 죽은 제갈량의 인형을 보고 혼비백산해 도망가는 내용이다. 3세기 중국의 이 사건이 21세기 포르투갈에서 재현됐다. 무대는 유로2004 C조 이탈리아 - 덴마크전이 열린 포르투갈 기마라에스의 아폰소엔리케스 스타디움.

지난대회 준우승팀 이탈리아는 경기장에 들어서기 전까지 승리를 자신했다. 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 랭킹 10위에 올라 있는 이탈리아는 15위 덴마크를 카데나치오(빗장수비)와 크리스티안 비에리(인터밀란)의 '한방'으로 물리칠 기세였다. 그러나 아주리 군단은 골대 뒤에 펄럭이는 태극기를 보면서 화들짝 놀랐다. 한국관광객들이 걸어놓은 태극기는 이탈리아 선수들에게 2002년 한·일월드컵 한국과의 16강전에서 당한 1-2 역전패의 악몽을 떠올리게 했다. 

자꾸 눈에 밟히는 태극기를 보면서 이탈리아 선수들은 점점 '악몽의 주술'에 걸려들었다. 아주리 군단이 자랑하는 미드필더진은 위력을 발휘하지 못했고 모처럼 얻은 득점기회는 상대 골키퍼의 선방에 막혔다. 적어도 한국기자의 눈에는 그렇게 보였다.

The Danes had the best of the possession and the chances in the first half against a nervy Italian side with Thomas Helveg twice going close. 
 
The Italians, who will now be under pressure in their second game against Sweden on Friday, were brighter after the break but could not find a way past goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen. 

The result means Denmark have now played four European championship finals matches without scoring after their poor showing in Euro 2000. 

Although Italy had the first chance when Francesco Totti's powerful 25-metre free kick was tipped away by Sorensen, it was the Danes who took the initiative, pushing forward on the flanks and getting early control of the central midfield areas. 

Italy keeper Gianluigi Buffon was pressed into action in the 16th minute, pushing over a left-foot drive from Helveg who had opened up space by cutting in from the right. 

Denmark striker Jon Dahl Tomasson was making himself a nuisance for the Italian defence and, although he was booked in the 29th minute for diving, he went close with a flashing header four minutes later and then set up Helveg who fired just wide. 

BEST CHANCES 

The best chances for both sides came right on the stroke of halftime with Sorensen making a great double save to foil Alessandro Del Piero and then Totti, both from close range. 

At the other end the Danes could have gone in with a lead they probably deserved when Martin Joergensen's low shot forced a good save out of Buffon after good work from the lively Dennis Rommedahl down the right. 

After surviving that scare at the end of a poor first half showing, the Italians were more determined and effective after the interval, creating two good openings straight away. 

Totti produced a superb pass to put in Gianluca Zambrotta but the left-back shot harmlessly across the face of goal. 

Then Zambrotta, pushing forward with more urgency, found Christian Vieri with a well delivered cross and Sorensen did well to push the striker's firm header over the bar. 

Moments later Christian Panucci wasted a chance when, unattended by the Danish defence, he headed wide from a Totti corner. 

Italy coach Giovanni Trapattoni brought on Gennaro Gattuso for Cristiano Zanetti in midfield and Antonio Cassano for the disappointing Del Piero as he looked to break the deadlock. 

But Denmark almost caught them on the break when the pacey Rommedahl burst forward and was only stopped by a body check from Fabio Cannavaro which resulted in a deserved yellow card for the Italy captain. 

The Danes went close to a winner in the 75th minute when Buffon did well to block a Tomasson shot and Rommedahl was unable to make the most of the rebound.
