PORTO (Reuters) - Striker Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a brilliantly-executed late goal to give the Netherlands a 1-1 draw with arch-rivals Germany in their opening Euro 2004 match. 

Van Nistelrooy, who had endured a frustrating night, turned sharply to hook in a right-wing cross after 81 minutes, acrobatically steering the ball past goalkeeper Oliver Kahn to earn his side a point.

Germany had deservedly taken the lead on Tuesday through Torsten Frings's 30th-minute free kick and although the Dutch rallied in the closing stages, the Germans appeared to have done enough to win. 

Instead, one point each means the Czech Republic top Group D after their earlier 2-1 win over Latvia. 

"We played very well in the first half and deserved to go into the lead but I think a draw is a fair result because the Dutch did step up a gear in the second half," Germany coach Rudi Voeller said. 

"There was tremendous disappointment in the locker room but I think the feeling will prevail that a draw was fair.

"In a way a draw is a good thing because it prevents the kind of complacency that settles in when you win clearly." 

Dutch coach Dick Advocaat said his players had failed to carry out his tactical instructions. 

"We didn't play well in the first half," he said. "My players didn't do what they were meant to do. 

"We had too many people in defence when they were supposed to push on into midfield and we could hardly reach our strikers."

FIRST CHANCE 

Although the Dutch created the first chance after only two minutes, Germany dominated the match with a performance better than many expected after a sequence of poor results. 

Germany, European champions three times, have a history of doing well in tournaments and both their approach play and defensive tenacity against the Dutch suggest they might have found form at exactly the right time. 

Voeller largely won the tactical battle against Advocaat, who opted to play Van Nistelrooy as a lone striker. 

Until he replaced ineffective midfielders Boudewijn Zenden and Edgar Davids at halftime with the far more lively Marc Overmars and Wesley Sneijder, Van Nistelrooy was a largely isolated orange beacon of Dutch hope. 

It might have been very different if he had connected with a delightful lob from Philip Cocu after just two minutes but the ball eluded his long reach. 

It was Germany who then took the iniative with Frings working tirelessly in midfield alongside man-of-the-match Michael Ballack and Bernd Schneider. 

With Dietmar Hamann dropping back deep as well, the Dutch made no real impact up front, allowing the Germans to break forward in numbers every time a Netherlands attack petered out. 

NERVOUS STATE 

Both teams went into the match in a nervous state of mind following poor build-ups, with the Germans under pressure after a 5-1 defeat by Romania and a 2-0 home loss to Hungary. 

The Dutch, beaten 1-0 by Belgium and Ireland in their build-up, were also rattled by the usual personality clashes in their camp. They rarely played as a working unit and Germany's championship pedigree came more to the fore as the game went on. 

The match was played in a passionate atmosphere at the Dragao Stadium with the thousands of orange-clad Dutch fans becoming more subdued as their team was pushed back until their dramatic late equaliser. 

German goalkeeper and captain Kahn, celebrating his 35th birthday, had a rather more subdued celebration than seemed likely and walked off looking very glum at the end. 

Still, the Germans had many reasons to be happy with their performance which emphatically announced their presence in the tournament. 

The Dutch too were pleased with a point but their overall plays needs to improve if they are to qualify from a tough group.

니스텔로이는 16일 새벽(한국시간) 포르투갈 포르투 드라강 스타디움에서 열린 '전차군단' 독일과의 유로2004 D조 1차전에서 0-1로 지고 있던 후반 36분 누구도 예상치 못한 감각적인 가위차기 슛으로 동점골을 터트리며 이번 대회 최고 명승부 중 하나였던 이날 경기를 1-1 무승부로 마감했다. 이로써 네덜란드는 지난 2000년 2월 2-1 승리 이후 이어오던 대 독일전 2연승을 마감하며 역대전적에서 10승13무13패(서독 시절 성적 포함)를 기록했다. 

최다 우승국(3회)인 독일은 초반부터 거세게 네덜란드를 밀어붙였다. 전반 22분 케빈 쿠라니의 중거리슛으로 기선을 제압했고 뵈른스의 원바운드 헤딩슛으로 네덜란드 골문을 위협했다. 결국 전반 30분 페널티지역 왼쪽에서 얻은 프리킥을 독일 프링스가 오른발로 감아찬 볼이 네덜란드 GK 반 데사르의 머리 위를 지나 골포스트를 맞고 그대로 골문 안으로 빨려들어갔다. 

지난 대회 득점왕 클뤼베르트를 제외하고 니스텔로이를 원톱에, 반 데 메이데(25·인터 밀란)와 반 데 바르트(21·아약스) 등 '신 튤립 삼총사'를 전방에 내세운 네덜란드는 실점한 후 거센 반격에 나섰다. 전반 41분 바르트의 왼발 터닝슛이 골대를 살짝 비켜갔고 후반 교체투입된 오베르마스도 회심의 오른발 중거리슛으로 대항했다. 결국 해결사는 니스텔로이였다. 니스텔로이는 후반 36분 오른쪽 측면에서 반 데 메이데가 가까스로 오른발 크로스를 올리자 독일 수비수 뵈른스를 등진 채 몸을 뒤틀며 오른발 가위차기슛으로 '거미손' 올리버 칸도 꼼짝 못하는 창조적인 골을 성공시키며 승부를 원점으로 돌렸다. 

한편 체코는 이날 아베이루에서 열린 라트비아전에서 전반 45분 라트비아의 프로호렌코프스에게 선제골을 내주며 이변의 희생양으로 전락할 위기에 처했지만, 후반 28분 바로스와 후반 40분 하인츠의 잇단 골로 2-1로 승리했다. 이로써 승점 3을 챙긴 체코가 '죽음의 D조'에서 1위로 나섰다.

'전차군단' 독일과 '오렌지군단' 네덜란드가 치열한 공방전 끝에 승부를 가리지 못했다. D조에 속한 양 팀은 16일(이하 한국시간) 펼쳐진 맞대결에서 1-1무승부를 기록했다. 

전반전은 열세가 예상됐던 독일의 페이스. 독일은 세트플레이 상황에서 여러차례 좋은 장면을 만들어내며 네덜란드의 골문을 위협했다. 그리고 전반 30분 프리킥 찬스에서 행운의 선취골을 뽑아내며 경기를 리드하기 시작했다. 좌측면에서 얻어낸 프리킥 찬스에서 토르스텐 프링스가 강한 회전이 걸리는 크로스를 날렸고, 이 볼은 독일 공격수와 네덜란드 수비수들에게 걸리지 않고 그대로 우측 포스트를 때리며 골문으로 빨려 들어갔다.(독일 1-0 네덜란드) 독일은 행운이 담긴 골에 환호작약했고, 네덜란드는 수비수들과 골키퍼 에르윈 반 데 사르의 실책성 플레이에 땅을 쳤다. 그리고 전반전은 독일의 우세한 분위기가 이어지며 1-0리드로 종료됐다. 

후반전에 들어서 네덜란드의 딕 아드보카드 감독은 공격력이 강한 마크 오베르마스와 웨슬레이 스나이더를 투입하며 동점골을 엿봤다. 그러나 네덜란드는 공세를 펼치고도 독일의 효과적인 수비와 골키퍼 올리버 칸의 선방으로 후반 종반까지 승부를 원점으로 돌리지 못했다. 오히려 독일의 케빈 쿠라니와 바스티안 슈바인슈타이거에게 역습찬스를 내주며 추가골을 내줄 위기를 맞기도 했다. 

하지만 오렌지군단에는 '득점기계' 루드 반 니스텔루이가 있었다. 경기의 분위기가 점차 독일의 승리로 굳어지던 후반 36분. 반 니스텔루이는 그림같은 발리슛으로 동점포를 쏘아 올리며 오렌지빛 팬들을 열광시켰다. 우측에서 안디 반 데 메이데가 독일 수비수의 볼을 가로채며 날카로운 크로스를 올렸고, 반 니스텔루이가 몸을 공중에 띄우며 멋진 오른발 발리슛으로 연결했다. 반 니스텔루이의 발끝을 떠난 볼은 칸의 오른쪽을 관통하며 독일의 골문으로 파고들었다.(독일 1-1 네덜란드) 

기세가 오른 네덜란드는 후반 막판 거세게 독일을 밀어붙였으나 역전에 성공하지는 못했다. 후만 39분 주장 필립 코쿠의 회심의 헤딩슛이 칸의 철벽방어에 막혀 아쉬움을 남겼다. 독일 역시 후반 43분과 로스타임이 흐르던 46분 슈바인슈타이거와 미하엘 발라크가 위협적인 중거리슛을 시도했으나 골문을 외면하고 말았다. 

혈전을 벌인 끝에 무승부를 기록한 독일과 네덜란드는 각각 승점 1점을 기록하며 D조 공동 2위에 올랐다. 

한편 앞서 열린 경기에서는 체코가 천신만고 끝에 '돌풍의 팀' 라트비아에 짜릿한 역전승을 거뒀다. 체코는 0-0으로 맞서던 전반 46분 라트비아의 간판공격수 마리스 페르파코프시키스에게 기습선제골을 내주며 전반을 1-0으로 뒤진 채 마쳤다. 그러나 후반들어 전열을 가다듬은 체코는 후반 28분 밀란 바로스가 동점골을 터뜨리며 승부를 원점으로 돌렸다. 그리고 후반 40분 교체투입된 마렉 헤인츠가 천금같은 역전골을 터뜨리며 극적인 역전승을 일궈냈다. 

치열한 접전이 예상되는 '죽음의 조' D조의 2차전은 오는 20일 새벽(1시-라트비아:독일, 3시 45분-네덜란드:체코)에 2차전이 펼쳐진다.
