Rooney gets England back on track
England v Switzerland - MATCH REPORT
Thu 17 Jun, 7:20 PM

PARIS (AFP) - Wayne Rooney helped himself to two goals and a place in history as England got their Euro campaign back on track with an impressive 3-0 win over 10-man Switzerland on Thursday.

Rooney's 23rd and 75th minute strikes made the 18-year-old the youngest ever player to score in the finals of a European Championships.

They were also the perfect tonic for Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad after the agony of the last gasp defeat by France in their group B opener.

Two of England's goals came after Swiss defender Bernt Haas was sent-off for a second bookable offence in the 60th minute.

Steven Gerrard completed the morale-boosting win eight minutes from the end to leave Switzerland facing the daunting task of beating France in their remaining group match if they are to have any chance of advancing to the quarter-finals.

England's new generation

Gerrard's good work for the first goal and a neat touch from Gary Neville created the opening for David Beckham to fire a pinpoint cross to Michael Owen beyond the back post.

The Liverpool man then drew two Swiss defenders out of position before chipping the ball to Rooney, who was left with the simplest of headed finishes from close range.

Any doubt about the outcome disappeared 15 minutes from the end after Owen Hargreaves hoisted a clearance from the edge of his own area deep into Swiss territory.

Substitute Darius Vassell was first to the bouncing ball, which he held up long enough for Rooney to arrive and crash a fierce low drive into the net courtesy of a double ricochet off the post and the back of Stiel.

With eight minutes left Gary Neville ran on to Beckham's astute pass and sent in a low cross. Gerrard did the rest by squeezing a side-footed shot between Stiel and the post from an acute angle.

It's Wayne's world as Rooney makes history

COIMBRA, Portugal (AFP) - Wayne Rooney carved his name into the record books when the England striker become the youngest ever goalscorer in the history of the European championships.

The boy from Liverpool grabbed the record with a first half header against Switzerland at the tender age of 18 years, seven months and 23 days, and added a second for good measure in the second-half.

The previous holder of the honour was Dragon Stojkovic, who hit the net for Yugoslavia against France at the 1984 finals aged 19 years, three months and 16 days.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson paid handsome tribute to the astonishing teenager.

"Absolutely fantastic," purred the Swede.

"Two beautiful goals. He worked really hard.

"To be 18-years-old and put in that performance it is incredible."

The Everton attacker, whose second goal was added to by Steven Gerrard to complete the 3-0 victory, met his date with destiny in the 23th minute in the stadio Cidade in this central Portuguese city.

David Beckham's inch-perfect cross fell to Michael Owen out on the left and the Liverpool striker's chip found Rooney whose lightning header had Swiss keeper Jorg Stiel completely flummoxed.

"Rooney, Rooney" came the chant from the terraces for the stocky boy whose only just been given the vote and a driving licence.

Born on October 24, 1985, Rooney has had a meteoric rise to his current standing as one of the game's hottest properties - he only put on an England shirt for the first time in February of last year aged 17 years and four months, becoming England's youngest ever cap.

Since that friendly against Australia, Rooney, who has been likened to a muscular version of Roberto Baggio or former Liverpool great Kenny Dalglish - the first player he modelled himself on - has been called upon to serve his country 15 times.

With lightning acceleration not always evident in a player of his mould - he measures 1.76 metres (5ft 11ins) and with a weakness for junk food weighs in at 78 kilograms - Rooney also has strength and poise.

An Evertonian all his short life his sensationally quick rise through the ranks is emphasised by his ever burgeoning wage packet - less than two years ago he was an eighty pound (120 euros) a week trainee - now he's the rumoured subject of a 35 million euro bid from Chelsea.

When tackled on the milestone awaiting him here in the run-up to Thursday's Group B game, Rooney was maturity personified, saying: "Obviously looking back in years to come it will be a big thing or whatever but I just want to go and win the game with England and not really concentrate on that one thing."

The onle flip side to Rooney is his slightly suspect temperament. Four minutes before his goal he had caught the eye of the referee for a foul on Steil resulting in the Swiss keeper receiving treatment and Rooney a yellow card.

But all his teenage aggression was directed in the right way in England's opener against France where he shone with a polished performance which defied predictions from some quarters that he might not be quite ready for the pressure of a European championships.

He even won the penalty which David Beckham had saved by Fabien Barthez.

Owen knows a thing or two about being a teenage prodigy having made his debut as an 18-year-old and scoring one of the greatest ever World Cup goals at the 1998 finals in France 1998.

Now the senior figure in the strike team, Owen predicted: "He can be anything he wants to be. It's up to him now how he wants his career to pan out and how much he's willing to sacrifice everything else."

Eriksson happy with 'good job done'
Thu 17 Jun, 7:26 PM

Sven Goran Eriksson hailed a "good job done" as England beat Switzerland 3-0 in Coimbra to kick-start their bid for Euro 2004 glory.

The goals came from Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard, either side of an own goal by Swiss goalkeeper Jorg Stiel, who was unfortunate as Rooney's shot rebounded back off a post and into the net via his head.

The results gives England renewed hope of qualifying for the quarter-finals and erases the memory of Sunday's last-gasp 2-1 defeat to France.

And Eriksson said: "It's a good job done.

"When you lose as we did on Sunday you never know what the reaction will be.

"I thought the reaction would be very good - and it was.

"We were nervous at the beginning, it was difficult to keep the ball.

"But we've done the job and the three points are the most important thing today."

Eriksson praised the contribution of Everton striker Rooney, who became the youngest player to score in the European Championships at the age of 18 years and 237 days.

The Swede said: "He worked very hard and congratulations to him - at 18 that performance at this level is wonderful.

"The heat affected both teams but I'm happy because our fitness level is much better than it was in the World Cup in 2002 - so that's good for the future."
