The 43,507 spectators at Legion Field waited through a thirty-minute thunderstorm delay for the start of tonight’s quarterfinal match between Argentina and Spain. Argentina exploded with four second-half goals to beat Spain 4-0, and will face Portugal in the semi-finals on Tuesday in Athens, Georgia.

Argentina had the first clear opportunity to score after sixteen minutes. Claudio LOPEZ (ARG) sent a long cross into the Spanish penalty area. Hernan CRESPO (ARG) was well positioned, but his volley from nine meters was off target.

In the 29th minute, Spanish forward RAUL (ESP) nearly caught goalkeeper Pablo CAVALLERO (ARG) off his line with a soft chip, but the Argentine keeper recovered to punch the ball over the bar.

Argentina was fortunate not to go down a goal in the 32nd minute. Spanish captain OSCAR (ESP) wasted an opportunity from 12 meters by shooting directly at CAVALLERO (ARG).

Argentina took a 1-0 lead one minute after the break. Matias ALMEYDA (ARG) intercepted a pass and beat three Spanish defenders before shooting from 12 meters. The ball hit the underside of the crossbar and rebounded to CRESPO (ARG) who headed home in front of an open net.

The South Americans extended their lead 2-0 in the 52nd minute on an own goal by ARANZABAL (ESP). CRESPO (ARG) penetrated down the left flank and served a dangerous ball through the goalmouth. ARANZABAL (ESP) was trailing the play and inadvertently struck the ball into his own net.

Argentina capped off a brilliant combination in the 66th minute with their third goal of the match. Hugo MORALES (ARG) feathered a perfect pass to Claudio LOPEZ (ARG). The forward beat two defenders in the box before firing from home to take a 3-0 lead.

The victory was sealed in the 88th minute. After a Spanish defender handled the ball in his own penalty area, CRESPO (ARG) calmly converted the penalty kick. CRESPO’s (ARG) two-goal performance catapulted him to second on the tournament scoring chart with 11 points.

The Golden Goal gleamed in the Orange Bowl as Portugal passed into the Semi-Finals after beating France 2-1.

France were punished by a penalty decision in the 105th minute as CALADO (POR) placed the spot kick past LETIZI (FRA).

The scoreline will be in the history books forever but this will never tell the story of what happened during the 105 minutes of football.

France dominated this match out-playing Portugal in every department but they paid for their failure to turn dominance into goals. Time and time again, they froze in front of the Portuguese goal preferring to pass instead of shooting.

The game fizzled out, a bit, in the second half but we saw perhaps the best save ever in the Orange Bowl, as LETIZI pushed the ball over, in the last seconds of the second half, from a shot by PEIXE (POR).

It was extra time and Golden Goal glory would shine on one of the Quarter-Finalists. It was Portugal in the 105th minute penalty by CALADO (POR). They go into the medal round.

In the third quarter-final football match of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, Nigeria capitalised on goals by Augustine OKOCHA (NGR) and Celestine BABAYARO (NGR) to defeat Mexico 2-0 in front of 44,788 spectators at Birmingham's Legion Field.

One minute after Jose GARCIA (MEX) was robbed from eight meters by goalkeeper Joseph DOSU (NGR), the Nigerians counterattacked and .scored the first goal of the match. At the 20 minute mark, midfielder Daniel AMOKACHI (NGR) sent a perfectly chipped ball to OKOCHA (NGR) at the top of the area. The midfielder collected the pass and rocketed home from 18 meters.

A brilliant save by Mexican goalkeeper Jorge CAMPOS (MEX) prevented the Nigerians from taking a two-goal lead in the 26th minute. A clever pass by Nigerian sensation Nwankwo KANU (NGR) put Tijani BABANGIDA (NGR) clear in front of the Mexican net. From eight meters, CAMPOS (MEX) extended high and to his left to push the ball wide of the right post.

In injury time of the first half, Duilio DAVINO (MEX) was red carded after he intentionally handled the ball to stop a Nigerian breakaway.

Reduced to 10 men but in need of a goal in the second half, Mexico went on the offensive. Captain Luis GARCIA (MEX) was denied by DOSU (NGR) from nine meters and left of the goal in the 55th minute. Two minutes later GARCiA (MEX) nearly missed with a header that sailed just over of the bar.

Substitute Francisco PALENCIA (MEX) might have done better with his first touch moments after he stepped on the pitch in the 65th minute. The forward wasted Mexico's best opportunity of the match, side--volleying high over the bar from five yards.

Nigeria seemed relaxed throughout and put the match out of reach in the 65th minute. Celestine BABAYARO (NGR) collected a loose ball after a corner kick and fired past a helpless CAMPOS (MEX) to take a 2-0 lead and close out the scoring.

Brazil and Ghana played out an Olympic football showpiece in a match-up of two giants from South America and Africa.

In a tantalizing game both teams displayed speed, agility, skill and wonderful football. Brazil's luck changed in the 17th minute as DUODO (GHA), under pressure, scored an own-goal. But Ghana are not a team that drops its head and 6 minutes later from a free kick outside the Brazilian area, AKUNNOR (GHA), the captain drove the ball home.

This is when you need someone, of great ability, to break the deadlock. And it was Felix ABOAGYE (GHA) who headed a superb cross from the right in the 53rd minute. Once again it didn't stay this way. RONALDINHO (BRA) ran into the area and with a low well placed drive put the score level. And it was the same player after 62 minutes, from an impossible angle, that chipped one over ADDO (GHA). ROBERTO CARLOS (BRA) gave a world class pass to set BEBETO (BRA) free. At full speed BEBETO fired the ball into the net (72nd Minute).

It stayed 4-2 . It was a great game. Two teams on a world stage in a world class competition.
