A penalty kick by YOON (KOR) in the first half helped lead Korea Republic to win its first ever Olympic football match, 1-0, over Ghana. A unified Korean team defeated Mexico 5-3 at the 1948 Olympics. Korea Republic was awarded the penalty after KUFFOUR (GHA) dragged HWANG (KOR) down in the penalty area.

Despite outshooting Korea in the game and having numerous scoring opportunities, Ghana was unable to find the back of the net.

In the second half, Korea Republic was able to neutralize Ghana's speed and athleticism as both teams opted for the long ball. Korea Republic missed a chance to extend their lead in the 61st minute when HWANG's (KOR) header off a corner kick hit the far post.

In the final 20 minutes, Ghana had a flurry of opportunities to tie the match with forward Felix ABOAGYE (GHA) leading the way with three shots on goal. However, it was the good form of keeper SEO (KOR) that helped Korea hold the lead.

The Italian Olympic team did not manage to live up to expectations. The Italian Olympic team did not manage to live up to expectations. This was despite the fact that the team included two experienced players in the shape of Massimo Crippe (no. 8) and Salvatore Fresi (no. 6, here doing battle with Lara of Mexico)...

In front of 44,211 fans -- the second match of a doubleheader -- Italy and Mexico came out very intense. Each team appeared anxious to test the opposition's defense, providing an attractive, attacking half of football.

The Mexicans squandered a clear opportunity in the 22nd minute as Mexican captain Luis GARCIA (MEX) watched his shot from 12 meters sail harmlessly over the crossbar.

At the other end of the field it was forward Cristiano LUCARELLI (ITA) who narrowly missed after beating a Mexican defender.

Jos? Garcia (no. 7) vying with the Italian Tommasi.Jos? Garcia (no. 7, vying with the Italian Tommasi) supported Mexico's attacks down the left flank. But they were not too successful in this respect with only two goals in four games.

The best opportunity of the half came in the 35th minute when midfielder Manuel SOL (MEX) collected a poor clearance following a corner kick and hit a bending shot on goal. Italian goalkeeper Gianluca PAGLIUCA (ITA) dove to his left to push the ball past the far post.

In the second half, the missed opportunities continued. In the 68th minute, midfielder Massimo CRIPPA (ITA) fired a dipping shot from 25 meters, but keeper Jorge Campos (MEX) was positioned well to make the save.

In a span of three minutes GARCIA (MEX) failed on two more clear opportunities. The best of these two chances came in the 79th minute when the midfielder's shot from 18 meters was parried by a diving PAGLIUCA (ITA).

Mexico broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute when substitute Francisco PALENCIA (MEX) beat goalkeeper PAGLIUCA (ITA) at the left post.

A very excited crowd of 46,713 showed up to see one of the greatest surprises in Olympic football history. The star studded favourits, Brazil, were beaten by a well organised Japan and the heroic performance of Japanese keeper YOSHIKATSU (JPN). BEBETO (BRA) and company hustled and worried the Japanese defense and at the end of the first half the 0-0 score did not do justice to an exciting and quality first 45 minutes.

It looked as though Brazil would go into top gear as the second half started. But as the sun set in the Miami sky, Japan had achived the historic victory.

The goal was a gift. ALDAIR (BRA) and DIDA (BRA) clashed in the penalty area, and taking advantage of the confusion, TERUYOSHI (JPN) had an easy opportunity and pushed a slow trickling shot into the net at the 72nd minute mark. YOSHIKATSU (JPN) had an absolutely brilliant game, providing save after save to the delight and agony of the crowd. Olympic football has left a historic footnote here in Miami, Florida.

Goals Scored: KANU Nwankwo (NGA) 44'

Nigeria defeated Hungary 1-0 on a 76th minute goal by Nwankwo KANU in front of 25,303 fans at the Citrus Bowl.

Hungary forward Gabor EGRESSY had two scoring chances early in the second half, but both were saved by Nigerian goalkeeper Joseph DOSU, one on a fully-extended dive and the other when he swept away a one-on-one chance with his legs.

Captain Zoltan Pet?.Despite the seven goals conceded, the defence was the strongest part of the Hungarian team. A major role was played by captain Zoltan Pet?, who can play either as stopper or as libero.

Fan favourite Nigeria attcked with energy, urgency and spirit the entire second half in search of the winning goal, putting together several nifty combinations at the top of the penalty box which produced numerous scoring chances.

It was a brilliant combination between KANU (NGA) and AMOKACHI (NGA) which led to the winning goal. In lightning quick sequence, AMOKACHI lifted KANU's pass over the defense with the outside of his right foot, putting the midfielder behind the Hungarian defense and KANU poked the ball past Hungarian goalkeeper SAFAR (HUN) from close range.

Substitute IKPEBA nearly gave Nigeria an insurance goal when his blast from 18 meters slammed off the right goal post in the 81st minute.

Hungary was dangerous in the match through midfielder LISZTES, whose dribbling runs earned two free-kicks at the top of the penalty box.

In an unusual move, the Nigeria Football Association replaced Head Coach Willy BAZUAYE with Technical Advisor Jo BONFRERE right before the match. BONFRERE will guide the Nigerian team through the rest of the tournament.
