한국, 멕시코와 무승부 
  
올림픽특별취재단= 한국축구의 사상 첫 올림픽 8강진출 가능성이 높아졌다. 

 한국은 23일 오후 7시(한국시간 24일 오전 9시)美國 앨라배마州 버밍햄으로  옮겨 열린 '96애틀랜타올림픽 축구 예선리그 C조 2차전에서 북중미 예선 1위팀인 멕시코와 득점없이 비겼다. 

 이로써 한국은 멕시코와 나란히 1승1무(승점 4)를 기록, 남은 이탈리아와의 최종전 (25일)에서 비기기만해도 8강에 오를수 있게 됐다. 

 아프리카의 강호 가나를 꺾고 쾌조의 스타트를 끊었던 한국은 8천여 동포응원단이 열렬한 성원을 보내는 가운데 벌어진 2차전에서 멕시코의 빠른 공격과  개인기에 밀려 전반 수세에 몰렸으나 밀착수비로 위기를 넘긴뒤 후반들어 우세한 경기를 펼쳐 무승부를 기록했다. 
 
 지난 2월 로스앤젤레스에서 한차례 평가전을 치렀던 두 팀간 대결은 여전히  조직력과 개인기의 격돌. 

 빠른 돌파에 적극적인 대인방어로 맞선 한국은 전반을 0-0으로 보낸 뒤 후반  9분 교체멤버 이원식이 아크에서 밀어준 볼을 최용수가 페널티지역 오른쪽에서  슛을 날렸으나 수비수 태클로 무위에 그쳤다. 

 한국은 후반이후 활기찬 공격으로 주도권을 장악했다. 

 멕시코는 한국의 수비가 견고, 공간침투가 어렵게되자 간간히 무모한 중거리 슛을 날렸으나 골과는 거리가 멀었다. 

 비쇼베츠감독은 쉽게 흥분하는 멕시코선수들의 성격을 이용 선수들에게 다소 거친 태클을 주문했다. 

 멕시코는 후반 21분 이원식이 상대 수비수의 진로방해로 프리킥을 얻었으나  이기형의 볼은 골대를 크게 벗어났다. 

 한국은 절호의 득점찬스를 맞았으나 이를 살리지못했다. 

 후반 27분 GK 서동명이 상대 진영 깊숙히 길게 차준 볼을 이원식이 아크 왼쪽에서 슛, 골대를 맞고 튕겼다. 

 경기시작 72분만에 가장 슛다운 슛이었다. 

 멕시코는 종료 직전 호세 아분디스가 가슴으로 트리핑한 볼을 슛으로  연결했으나 골대밖으로 크게 솟아올랐다. 
 
 ◇양팀 감독의 말 

  △아나톨리 비쇼베츠 한국감독= 와일드카드멤버인 황선홍,  이임생이  부상으로 경기도중에 나와 경기를 풀어가는데 힘이 들었다. 멕시코는 역시 개인기가 좋고 빠르다. 몇차례 득점기회가 있었는데 살리지못해 아쉽다. 아직도 8강진출의 가능성은 여전히 크며 마지막 남은 이탈리아전에서 최선을 다하겠다. 

 △카를로스 데 로스 코보스 멕시코감독= 전반에 우세한 경기를  펼치고  득점에 실패했다. 득점가시권에서 슛이 부정확한 것이 패인이고 한국은 스피드와 조직력이 탁월했다. 가나전을 승리해 지역예선에서 그랬던 것 처럼 무패로 8강에 오르겠다.

The Group C match between South Korea and Mexico at Legion Field opened with a great deal of action coming from both sides. South Korea had the better of the early play and seemed to surprise the Mexicans with their overall team speed.  

After five minutes, flamboyant Mexican goalkeeper Jorge CAMPOS (MEX) was forced to play the ball with his feet after a back pass, and was nearly dispossessed five yards in front of his own goal.  

CAMPOS (MEX) was tested again in the 18th minute after South Korean captain YOON Joug-Uwan (KOR) dribbled past a few Mexican defenders and fired low to his right. CAMPOS (MEX) saved the shot and didn't offer a rebound.  

In the second half, the Mexicans were obviously determined to in maintain possession of the ball. For the first eight to ten minutes, Mexico strung pass after pass together in the South Korean half of the field.  

In the 72nd minute South Korea had a glorious opportunity to score when LEE Won Shik (KOR) hit a screaming shot from 18 meters that ricocheted off the crossbar. The rebound stayed in the penalty area but could not be put away.  

Substitute Jose Manuel ABUNDIS (MEX) wasted Mexico's only clear chance of the second half when his blast from seven meter sailed high over the goal.  

The Legion Field crowd of 26,111 didn't see any goals in the 0-0 draw, but both South Korea and Mexico put on an attractive display of football.

나이지리아 8강 선착 가나는 伊 꺾어  

「검은 대륙」아프리카 축구팀들이 올림픽무대에서 돌풍을 일으키고 있다.96애틀랜타올림픽 본선 진출팀인 가나.나이지리아는 나란히 두번째 경기를 승리로 장식해 8강 동반진출이 유력해졌다. 
 
이에따라 아프리카 축구는 세계 축구의 양대 축을 형성하고 있는 유럽과 남미 못지 않은 새로운 강호의 이미지를 전세계에 각인시켰다. 
 
한국과의 C조 첫 경기에서 1-0으로 패했던 가나는 세계 최고의 프로리그를 운영하는 이탈리아에 3-2로 재역전승을 거두며1승1패(승점3)로 기사회생의 발판을 만들었다. 경기를 치를수록개인기와 조직력이 살아나고 있는 가나는 멕시코 와의 마지막 경기를 승리로 장식할 경우 8강진출을 확정하게 된다. 
 
가나의 10대 스트라이커 크리스티안 사바(17)는 두번이나 이탈리아 골문을 가르며 득점 선두에 나서는등 「스타탄생」을 예고했다. 멕시코에 졌을때만해도 「설마」하며 희망을 버리지 않던이탈리아 현지 언론들은 사바의 맹활약을 부각시키며 『로마제국이17세 흑인소년에게 무너졌다』고 대서특필했다. 
 
D조의 나이지리아도 동구의 강호 헝가리를 누른데 이어 브라질을 꺾어 파란을 일으킨 일본마저 2-0으로 일축,2승으로 일찌감치 8강진출의 유리한 고지를 밟았다.남은 브라질과의 경기에서최소한 비기기만 해도 8강에 오르게 된다.이미 월드컵에서 여러차례 검은 돌풍을 일으켰던 아프리카는 이번 올림픽이 열리기전부터 특유의 유연한 몸놀림과 순발력에 강인한 체력까지 겸비,기존의 축구 선진국들로부터 「타도 0순위」로 지목돼 왔다. 
 
가나와 나이지리아의 선전으로 국제축구연맹(FIFA)최대 회원국인 아프리카는 오는 2006년 월드컵유치경쟁에서 한결 유리한위치에 올라서게 됐다. 
 
 
Ghana increased their defence and brought on some pressure to score two goals in the second half of Tuesday's match against Italy giving the 1992 Olympic bronze medal winners a 3-2 final victory. Italy twice managed to lead in the match, 1-0 and 2-1, both goals scored by Marco BRANCA (ITA), but in the end, Italy was not able to hold the lead.  

Trailing 2-1 at the half, Ghana managed to tie with Italy in the 63rd minute following a penalty kick. Augustine AHINFUL (GHA) placed the ball into the upper right corner of the net. Both second goals for each team were scored off penalty kicks. Ghana뭩 third score came in the 73rd minute when Christian SABAH (GHA) made a quick reverse and placed a left footed shot into the far post from 16 meters out, giving Ghana a 3-2 lead for good.  

Three yellow cards were issued in the first three minutes of the match as both teams continued to play an aggressive game. Two yellows cards for Ghana and five for Italy by the time the match was over. In the fourth minute of the second half, Mallam YAHAYA (GHA) received a yellow card, followed by Fabio GALANTE (ITA) and Hagan EBENZER (GHA). GALANTE (ITA) eventually left the field after adding a red card to his evening's collection,  

Italy never gave up. Even in the waning moments of the game, Italy had a chance to even up the score with a direct kick that was swept up by Ghana's goalkeeper. Ghana continued to fill the back field for the rest of the match, keeping the crowd of 27.849 on the edges of their seats.  

Ghana will conclude their week in Washington on Thursday, 25 July, with a match against Mexico. Italy will travel to Birmingham to meet Korea Republic on Thursday.

Brazil bounced back from their shock defeat against Japan to gain their first three points in the Olympics. 

Football does not get much better that this. End to end action forcing the Hungarian goalkeeper, SZUCS (HUN), to make save after save. And you cannot find a better atmosphere than a stadium full of chanting passionate fans. 

Goal number one for Brazil. RONALDINHO (BRA) controlled a high ball dribbled towards the area and although under pressure, went round the keeper scoring with skill and precision. 

The Hungarians did not drop their heads and just like the game against Japan, the goal against Brazil happened because of confusion. Taking advantage, MADAR (HUN) scored in the 58th minute. 

Before the celebrations had died down JUNINHO (BRA) hit a hard placed shot to give Brazil the lead, once again. The third was a gem. As BEBETO (BRA) bit the bullet and on a solo run along the edge of the area, did what the Brazilians do best and curled it around the keeper. 

It could have been more but SZUCS (HUN) had a great game. But Brazil stay alive and can turn their goals into gold.

일본, 나이지리아에 2대0 완패  

첫경기에서 강호 브라질을 꺾어 파란을 일으켰던 일본이 아프리카의 강호 나이지리아에 완패당했다. 
 
Goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca.Folowing their historic victory over Brazil, the Japanese went down 0:2 against Nigeria, which finally caused their elimination after the group games (goal difference). Here, midfielder Hattori (no. 6) competing against Nigeria's Oliseh. 

일본은 24일(한국시간)플로리다주 올랜도에서 벌어진 축구 D조 2차전에서 후반 38분 수비수 다다히로 아키바의 실수로 선취골을 내준데 이어 44분 나이지리아의 오거스틴 오카차에게 페널티킥을 허용,2-0으로 맥없이 무너져 1승1패를 기록했다. 
 
일본은 이날 경기개시후 시종 나이지리아의 개인기에 밀려 고전한데다 공격진이 3차례의 슈팅밖에 날리지 못하는 극도의 부진을보였다. 이로써 나이지리아는 2승을 기록,승점 6으로 조선두에나서 남은 브라질과의 경기에서 비기기만 해도 8강에 오를 수 있는 유리한 고지를 확보했다. 
 
반면 일본은 헝가리와의 마지막 경기에서 반드시 이겨야하는 부담을 안게 됐다.
