After two lacklustre performances in the Olympic Games, Italy rebounded to defeat Korea Republic 2-1 in front of 28,319 at Legion Field. The Koreans looked to be headed for the quarterfinals in the second half with the score tied 1-1, but a late Italian goal knocked the Asian team out of the tournament. The Italians were led by Marco BRANCA (ITA) whose two goals brought his tournament total to four.

Italy struck first in the match. In the 24th minute, BRANCA (ITA) curled a direct free kick over the Korean wall and past goalkeeper SEO Dong-Myung.

Italy continued on the offensive during the minutes following the goal, and in the 29th minute nearly extended their lead. BRANCA's (ITA) header was denied by the post after the forward latched onto a well-placed corner kick.

After the intermission, the Koreans opened with a flurry of opportunities. The best of these came from midfielder YOON Jong-Hwan in the 47th minute. The midfielders point blank shot from ten meters was saved by goalkeeper Gianluca PAGLIUCA (ITA).

South Korea finally broke through the Italian defence in the 62nd minute. After narrowly missing one minute earlier, midfielder LEE Kyung-Soo collected a loose ball at the top of the area and fired through a crowd to beat PAGLIUCA (ITA) at the far post.

On a change of possession late in the match, Italy recaptured the lead and knocked the Korea Republic out of quarter-final contention. Midfielder Raffaele AMETRANO (ITA) sent a long cross through the middle of the penalty area. The ball travelled through a crowded penalty area and found BRANCA (ITA) at the far post. The forward made no mistake in firing home from four yards.

France went into the game knowing that they would secure a place in the quarter-finals by inflicting a third defeat on Saudi Arabia.

When striker Florian MAURICE (FRA) was brought down in the 20th minute, he got up to put the penalty past goalkeeper AS-SADIG (KSA), but Saudi captain AMIN (KSA) equalised six minutes later with a speculative long shot.

The French remained the more positive team and had two efforts cleared off the Saudi goal-line.

SIBIERSKI (FRA) put France ahead again with an acrobatic goal shortly after half-time, and France continued to have the better of the exchanges, generally controlling the game in all departments.

France suffered the loss of DIENG (FRA) and DJETOU (FRA) through injury and both will be unavailable for Saturday’s quarter-final against Portugal.

Ghana's talented midfielder Hagan Ebenzer.Ghana's talented midfielder Hagan Ebenzer is one of the few in the team who is still under contract in the home country as of the end of the Olympic tournament.

The first goal of the match was scored in the final minutes of the first half. A shot by Ebenzer HAGAN (GHA) found the back of the net giving Ghana a 1-0 lead as they beaded of the field. Charles AKUNNOR (GHA) sent a corner kick into the box and was deflected and found by HAGAN (GHA). His shot bounced off Padro PAVEL (MEX) and into the back of the net giving Ghana the first lead of the game.

The pressure of tonight's match up developed into aggressive and offensive playing resulting in many fouls and a yellow card for Claudio SUAREZ (MEX) in the 56th minute. A red card received by Stephen BAIDOO (GHA) a few minutes later left the Ghana team short handed for the remainder of the evening.

Francisco SANCHEZ (MEX) crossed the ball from the right wing into the hands of goalkeeper Siomon ADDO (GHA) and Jose ABUNDIS (MEX) headed the ball out of his hands and into the back of the net to tie up the match in the 65th minute, giving Mexico their first goal following three scoreless halves.
