From the beginning of the match both teams wanted to score the first goal; both teams were mostly attacking. It was a very intensive and emotional game in the first half in which both sides were equal. Although the Italians and the Spaniards have a great quality of technical skills, they almost did not show it. The match was not very attractive in the second half, either; both teams had only a few possibilities to score. Chile's fourth goal came after a quick one-two between Tello and Navia. Nigeria pulled a goal back when Agali controlled a long ball

American substitute Sasha Victorine's penalty kick blast just past the desperate dive of goalkeeper Seigo Narazaki for a 5-4 penalty shootout victory over Japan marked the end of an increasingly dramatic quarterfinal match at Hindmarsh Stadium in Adelaide. The US team hade managed to get a last-gasp equaliser to make it to extra-time where the score-board remained unchanged. In regular time, Japan had dominated the first half and taken the lead on the half-hour. Wolff brought the Americans back into the game before Takahara re-installed the Japanese lead.

Match Summary: 
Patrick Mboma floated a brilliant free kick over the Brazilian wall for the opening goal in the 17th minute. Cameroon's teenager goalkeeper Kameni made several crucial saves just before and after half time. Captain Njitap was harshly sent off for two yellow cards before Brazil snatched a dramatic injury-time equaliser. Ronaldinho floated a free kick in after Nguimbat had also been sent off. Mbami struck the winner seven minutes into the second half of extra time. 
   
스페인-칠레, 미국-카메룬과 4강대결  

2000 시드니올림픽 축구 패권은  스페인-미국, 칠레-카메룬간 4강대결로 압축됐다. 

지난 13일 한국에 쓰라린 패배를 안겼던 스페인은 23일 밤 시드니 풋볼 스타디움에서 열린 8강전에서 후반 41분에 터진 가브리엘 가브리의 결승골에 힘입어  이탈리아를 1-0으로 누르고 4강에 올라 미국과 결승티켓을 다투게 됐다. 

미국은 일본과 2-2로 비긴 뒤 승부차기에서 5-4로 승리, 천신만고 끝에  준결승에 합류했다. 

스페인은 후반 25분 라울 타무도와 교체투입된 가브리가 사비의 패스를 받아 페널티지역 오른쪽에서 슛을 날려 그물을 흔들었다. 

남미의 강호로 칠레는 파블로 콘트레라스, 이반 사모라노, 레이날도 나비아, 로드리고 테요가 골잔치를 벌이며 빅토르 아갈리가 1골을 만회한데 그친 지난 대회 우승팀 나이지리아를 4-1로 대파했다. 

16세의 카를로스 카메니가 수문장으로 나선 카메룬은 2명이 퇴장당하는 열세 속에서도 연장 후반 8분 모데스테 음바미가 골든골을 작렬, 브라질을 2-1로 제압했다.
