Victor (NGA) 64'
Match Summary:
Two nice goals gave Nigeria a 2-0 lead after only 22
minutes and Australia seemed already lost in a sold out stadium. But the
home side came back into the game within three minutes where they scored
two goals. In the second half it was an intensive, attractive and exciting
match, too. Both teams had good opportunities to score, but only Nigeria
did. An unfortunate mistake by an Australian defender gave Agali the chance
which he converted into the winning goal.

Goals Scored: COMANDINI Gianni (ITA) 12' , AMBROSINI
Massimo (ITA) 18' , COMANDINI Gianni (ITA) 22' , COMANDINI Gianni (ITA)
29', own goal
Match Summary:
Honduras tried to attack from the outset but were dominated
by Italy for most of the first half. The Squadra Azzurra took little more
than 20 minutes to score three goals, the 2-0 one being a superb header
by Ambrosini on a cross from the right. Two minutes after getting his second
goal for Italy, Gianni Commandini was on the score- board once more, this
time with an own goal which instilled some hope into the Honduran time.
The second half was very physical but also exciting even if neither team
conceded another goal. Before a largely supportive crowd, Italy had several
break-aways on long balls but failed to capitalise on their chances. Honduras
never stopped pressing but just could not score.

Goals Scored: LEE Chun Soo (KOR) 52'LEE Chun Soo
(KOR) 52'
Match Summary:
In
a rather physical, hard-fought battle between two first-round losers Korea
turned out to be the clearly better team although they squandered many
good scoring opportunities. Chun-Soo Lee got the winner shortly after the
break which proved enough to beat the Moroccans whose attack was rather
unimpressive and no threat to the Korean defence.

Goals Scored: OLARRA Rafael (CHI) 24' , NAVIA
Reinaldo (CHI) 41' , LACRUZ (ESP) 54' , NAVIA Reinaldo (CHI) 90'
Match Summary:
Both teams set out to play open, attacking football,
with Spain enjoying more possession and better chances with some clever
long balls. However, Chile scored against the run of play through Olarra's
powerful header, and they grew in confidence. Zamorano exploited some lax
defending to cross for Navia to tap into an open goal. A fortunate deflection
off Lacruz's head saw Spain pull a goal back, but despite constant pressure,
they could not score again. A quick Chile counter-attack ended with a thunderbolt
from Navia.

Goals Scored: MBOMA Patrick (CMR) 16', pen. ,
VAGENAS Peter (USA) 64', pen.
Match Summary:
USA dominated most of the match, especially in the second
half. But even though they created many clear scoring chances, they had
to settle for a 1-1 draw. An almost sold out Bruce Stadium saw a high-speed
first half and also a half of chances. Mboma scored on a penalty and also
had two good shots from a distance. The American Wolff also had a lot of
opportunities, but lacked the finishing touch. However, Wolff got "rewarded"
in the middle of the second half. He was brought down by the goalkeeper
and Vagenas could equalise on the penalty. The US team produced a lot of
chances, but they were either missed or saved by the goalkeeper Bekono.

Match Summary:
Kuwait pulled off a stunning upset, with three goals
in 17 minutes after trailing at half-time. A defensive mix-up led to Al
Mutairi's equaliser from a corner while Saeid twice caught the Czechs on
the counter-attack. The European U-21 vice-champions led after less than
two minutes with Heinz hitting home with a powershot. The Czechs looked
stronger but did not count on Kuwait's resilience. Defender Lengyel's goal
came too late for the Czechs.

Goals Scored: FORTUNE Quinton (RSA) 10' , EDU
(BRA) 11' , NOMVETHE Siyabonga (RSA) 74' , LEKOELEA Steve (RSA) 90'
Match Summary:
A brilliant free kick by fortune got South Africa an
early lead but Brazil equalised almost straight from the kick off with
Edu converting a square cross. Brazil's captain Alex squandered several
half-chances before half-time but South Africa's defense was a lot tighter
in the second half and substitute Nomvethe scored his second goal of the
tournament with 16 minutes left. Lekoelea made sure on the stroke of full-time.

Goals Scored: NAKATA Hidetoshi (JPN) 67' , INAMOTO
Junichi (JPN) 74' , PORAZIK Andrej (SVK) 83'
Match Summary:
Another good crowd at Bruce Stadium in Canberra cheered
mainly for Japan who almost enjoyed a home match. In the first half the
scoreboard remained blank with Japan coming close to scoring when Inamoto
hit the bar with a header from the penalty spot five minutes before the
break. On a quick break in the 67th minute Japan scored a beautiful goal
and took the lead: Nakata headed home a superb cross from the left by Miura.
Nakata was clearly the man of the match with clever passing and smart moves.
He also set up the scecond goal taken by Inamoto, another top player in
this talented Japanese team. Slovakia's goal came too late to change things
and prevent Japan from making it to the quarterfinals.
