Azzurri salvage point from Ghana clash (2:2)

Italy's dream of collecting a first Olympic gold since the Berlin Games of 1936 nearly turned into a nightmare on Thursday evening as Ghana, expertly marshalled by Juventus hopeful Stephen Appiah, ruthlessly converted their chances to lead by two goals at the break. But coach Claudio Gentile's men upped the ante after the interval and rescued a deserved point by the final whistle.
"I'd like to see stylish football and get off to a good start," Gentile said before his side opened their Olympic campaign against the African side in Volos. The match began slowly, with Italy gradually gaining the upper hand as AC Milan playmaker Andrea Pirlo lived up to his pre-match billing as the star creative midfielder on display. However, the first chance fell to Ghana, Emmanuel Osei seeing his 30 metre drive fly over the bar on 11 minutes.

A further 12 minutes passed before Alberto Gilardino tamely headed the Italians' first real chance into the keeper's arms. The European side began to run short of ideas against the mobile, skilful Africans, although Giuseppe Sculli's 33rd minute shot on the turn skidded narrowly wide. Now the Ghanaians began to emerge from their shell and were soon rewarded for their efforts: Baffour Gyan started the move that allowed Appiah to tee up Emmanuel Pappoe to skilfully fire his side into a 36th minute lead.

Just a minute later, the Italians stormed upfield only for Daniele de Rossi to curl a strike just wide with the outside of the boot. Sculli blasted over and Pirlo narrowly missed with a free-kick five minutes from the interval before Angelo Palombo came agonisingly close on the stroke of half-time. But in the dying seconds of the first period, Ghana struck with clinical precision. Appiah set off on a mazy dribble, leaving three Italians in his wake before unleashing an unstoppable drive to send the Africans in at the break two goals to the good.

Perfect start to second half

Gentile's side emerged from the dressing room with fire in their bellies and were immediately rewarded as Gianpiero Pinzi latched onto a long through ball to volley an unstoppable drive past keeper George Owu four minutes into the half. The European giants pressed but Ghana held firm and the ever-dangerous Appiah blasted over on 55 minutes.

Denmark-based strike duo Kwadwo Poku and Razak Pimpong worked hard to relieve the increasing pressure, but the Azzurri maintained the impetus and de Rossi came close on 63 minutes. Still the Africans held out: the left-footed Pimpong showed his talent with a shot on the turn before Man of the Match Appiah came close to settling the issue with a quarter of an hour remaining. The action moved to the other end and de Rossi was unlucky to see his goal-bound effort beat the keeper but not defender John Mensa after 78 minutes.

The Italians finally achieved the breakthrough a few minutes later with a move brilliantly instigated by Simone del Nero. Gilardino's first effort was blocked by Owu, but the striker followed up to level with seven minutes remaining. Just three minutes later, del Nero evaded the offside trap but squandered a golden opportunity to seal the points with only Owu to beat. The match duly finished in a draw, leaving both teams hopeful of reaching the quarter-finals.

The coaches were satisfied enough with a share of the spoils. Commented Ghana's Portuguese boss Mariano Barreto: "We've watched a very interesting match. I'm happy with the draw despite the fact we were leading 2-0 at half-time. You're never truly safe against an Italian team. We knew they'd come out fighting but we still let them score early in the second half. But I'm proud of my team and I think they've played well tonight." Observed Italy coach Gentile: "We were two goals behind at half-time, so we can be delighted we didn't lose. It's obvious we're short of match practice. We haven't played a serious match since 8 June whereas Ghana have contested five or six friendlies. But we improved in the second half and applied some pressure."

Morocco and Costa Rica draw drably (0:0)

Very few spectators turned up in Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion for the encounter between Costa Rica and Morocco, and the desolate atmosphere seemed to have an effect on the players, who never really got going. The Moroccans will probably be more satisfied with the 0-0 draw, having been reduced to ten men on the hour mark, though they will know they could have snatched victory after creating the best openings in the game. With a point each, both sides are still very much in the running for qualification.

The determination of the North Africans was evident even before the kick-off, when they gathered in a circle to listen to goalkeeper Nadir Lamyaghri deliver a rousing pep talk. The 'keeper's words seemed to have the desired effect as the Young Atlas Lions roared forward from the first whistle. They even had the ball in the net after just four minutes, when Bouabid Bouden headed home a Moncef Zerka cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

The Moroccans continued to have the upper-hand in the early exchanges and were particularly dangerous down the right flank, but they could not carve out any clear-cut chances.

The Costa Ricans gradually came to grips with their opponents and went close to opening the scoring in the 18th minute, when Eric Scott tried to latch onto a long ball from the back only for Lamyaghri to surge from his box and make a desperation clearance.

That scare seemed to spark Mustapha Madih's men back into action, but though they regained the ascendancy, their finishing repeatedly let them down. On 25 minutes, Mehdi Taouil broke free down the wing but fired his shot into the stand. Two minutes later, Farid Talhaoui whipped in a wonderful cross from the right to the back post, where the unmarked Bouchaib El Moubarki attempted a spectacular volley only to miss miserably.

As the match progressed, the Moroccans again took their foot off the pedal, allowing the Ticos to pile on some pressure of their own and come close to breaking the deadlock. Roy Myre got on the end of another clearance from the back and lobbed the ball over the outrushing goalkeeper but had to watch it bounce wide.

Once again, the North Africans were quick to react and once again their shooting was awry, Oussama Souaidy (39') and Bouden (43') both spurning useful opportunities. Just as they had in the first half, the Moroccans came out after the interval with all guns blazing. Otmane El Assas rifled a 25-metre free-kick against the post in the 47th minute, and moments later El Moubarki twisted and turned his way into the box but could not find a way past the Costa Rican goalkeeper.

Morocco go down to ten men
As if trying to respect the established pattern of the match, the Moroccans then eased off again, and this time it was to be even more costly.  After escaping the attentions of his marker, Scott bore down on goal before having his legs taken from under him just outside the box by Jamal Alioui. As the last line of defence, Alioui had to get his marching orders. "The referee told me I was the last defender, that's why I was sent off,"  said the disappointed Moroccan captain after the game. "I'm not sure if it should have been a penalty or not." Carlos Hernandez stepped up to take the resultant free-kick, drawing a fine save from a fully-extended Lamyaghri (61').

Despite their numerical inferiority, the Moroccans still looked the more likely to  score, and in the 65th minute the excellent Talhaoui delivered another teasing cross, but El Moubarki's header flew narrowly wide. Three minutes later, the Al Wasl striker again went close, this time producing a delicate chip that Neighel Drummond just about managed to tip away.

As the match drifted towards its conclusion, the Costa Ricans went in search of a winner but failed to trouble the Moroccan defence unduly. The only really dangerous moment from the Ticos came in the 74th minute when Junior Diaz let fly from 25 metres but saw his shot well saved by the goalkeeper. The Moroccans made one last push for all three points but that was to be as fruitless as their previous efforts. "It was a very even match and both teams worked some clear openings," said Mustapha Madih afterwards, "but we can't deny that we let our concentration flag after Alioui's red card."

Madih's Costa Rican counterpart, Rodrigo Kenton, was broadly satisfied with his side's display, which was the country's first ever appearance in an Olympic Football Tournament. "It was a good match," he said, "If one team had managed to get their noses in front, they would certainly have gone on to win the game. I think we can build on this, and indeed we will have to get stronger if we are to win our next match." Kenton is surely not wrong, since his team's next opponents are Iraq, who pulled off a major surprise by beating highly-rated Portugal 4-2. Morocco, meanwhile, will be hoping they do not suffer a Portuguese backlash.

Patras, the city of goals, sees Iraq down Portugal (4:2)

Goals Scored: HAIDAR JABAR (IRQ) 13 ' Own Goal , EMAD MOHAMMED (IRQ) 16 ' , HAWAR MULLA MOHAMMED (IRQ) 29 ' , BOSINGWA (POR) 45 ' , YOUNIS MAHMOUD (IRQ) 56 ' , SALIH SADIR (IRQ) 93+ '

It was raining goals again last night in Patras where Iraq stunned Portugal 4-2 in their hotly contested Group D clash. Iraq's giant killing antics, witnessed by FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, seriously complicated the Iberians' chances of advancing, but raised expectations for Adnan Hamd's side.
Among the crowd at the Pampeloponnisiako Stadium were a few hundred raucous Iraqi supporters whose colour, chants and celebrations made the Asian side feel right at home. Iraq's all-important goals came from Mohammed Emad, Mohammed Hawar, Mahmoud Younis and Sadir Salih, while a Jabar Haidar own-goal, and a second from Bosingwa, put Portugal in the thick of the fight.

The game kicked off at a frantic pace with Hamd's men getting the better of the early exchanges and forcing their opponents onto the back foot. However, it was Portugal who drew first blood with their first decent attack after Jabar Haidar put a Hugo Almeida cross into his own net to silence the Iraqi supporters (0:1; 13').

Iraq refused to buckle and wasted no time hitting back. A miss-hit clearance in the Portuguese box fell to Emad, who volleyed unerringly past the diving keeper (1:1; 16'). The strike sparked jubilant scenes among the Iraqi faithful who celebrated as if their side had lifted gold. Minutes later, Emad was again involved as he went from goal scorer to goal provider. Deftly passing one defender with a neat one-two, the Iraqi striker again found himself bearing down on Moreira. But this time the Al Ittihad player selflessly crossed for his team-mate Mahmoud Younis to fire against the crossbar. Luckily for Iraq, Mohammed Hawar was on hand to nod in the rebound (2:1; 29').

Defensive errors at both ends provided further goal-scoring opportunities, but some wayward finishing from Almeida and Ricardo Costa when one-on-one with Sabri Tour kept Iraq's noses in front. As the first half wore on, Portugal pressed forward in search of an equaliser and the chances came thick and fast. First, Cristiano Ronaldo crashed a free kick against the upright, before Bosingwa finally levelled the tie with a scorching right-foot drive from the edge of the box (2:2; 45').

The Asian outfit had their best spell early in the second half as some clever play by Emad and Mahmoud Younis caused real problems for the Portuguese rearguard. Fortunately for the Europeans, their keeper Moreira was faultless with his numerous interventions. The tide began to turn Iraq's way, however, after Boa Morte was sent off for a reckless lunge at Abbas Bassim. "After the sending-off we lost our shape and began leaving spaces for Iraq to exploit on the counter-attack. They hit us harder than we expected on the break," the Portuguese coach Jos? Romao said afterwards.

And it was precisely on the counter-attack that Iraq grabbed the lead once more. This time the scorer was Younis, sweeping home an Emad cross after the winger had once again beaten Moreira (3:2; 56'). The awestruck No.10 raced towards the travelling supporters to celebrate his crucial strike.

Despite being a man down, Portugal dug deep as they desperately tried to salvage their pride. With Iraq defending deep and pinned for long stretches in their own area, chances were inevitable. Almeida came closest with a spectacular header that agonizingly thundered back off the crossbar. When Iraq did break though, they looked increasingly dangerous. It fell to Sadir Salih in the end to dash Portuguese hopes and put the result beyond doubt as he beat Moreira with a well placed right-foot strike (4:2; 93+). There was no time for more and the Iraqi side, who only got round to stamping the numbers on their spare jerseys in the stadium, had achieved a historic victory. "It was an extremely difficult tie against one of the top sides in Europe, but my men had grown in confidence and experience after the Asian Cup. The whole of Iraq was watching on TV, and for at least a short while, we helped them to forget their problems. For us that means a lot."

Portugal, the pre-tournament favourites for many, left the stadium shell-shocked and deflated. The final word went to the Portuguese coach Romao: "This is not the debut that we had hoped for, but we still have hope."
