Post match Facts and Figures

3 - Only three teams have gone through the final phase in France '98 without losing a match: France, Belgium and Italy. Four years ago, in USA '94, only Brazil concluded the World Cup unbeaten. Netherlands conceded their first defeat after a series of 3 wins and 3 ties. The Dutch team has a record of 14 wins, 9 ties and 9 defeats in 32 matches played in World Cup final phases. They have a +20 in goal difference, with 56 goals scored and 36 conceded.

6 - Davor Suker has scored 6 goals in the 7 matches played in this World Cup final phase. With just one match to go, Suker is the top scorer of the tournament. If he wins the adidas Golden Shoe trophy destined to the World Cup best goal scorer, it will be the sixth time in a row that 6 goals are enough to make it: Kempes (ARG) in 1978, Rossi (ITA) in 1982, Lineker (ENG) in 1986, Schillaci (ITA) in 1990, Stoitchkov (BGR) and Salenko (RUS) have all scored 6. The last top scorer with more than 6 goals was Grzegorz Lato (POL), who scored one more goal in 1974.

22 - The Netherlands have made 22 shot attempts, but only 8 were on target. Croatia has made only 6 shot attempts (just one in the whole 2nd half!) but put 3 on target and, above all, scored 2 goals. Patrick Kluivert put on target only 2 out of 5 shots, Wim Jonk 0/4, Phillip Cocu 0/3. The Dutchmen have attempted an overwhelming number of crosses (40: 15 from the right, 25 from the left), while Croatia attempted only 5. In spite of all these apparently positive statistics, Croatia achieved the 3rd place and its best result in football history.

59 - The final for the 3rd and fourth place has been played in 15 out of the 16 World Cups: only in 1930 the teams beaten in the semifinals, USA and Yugoslavia did not play against each other, and the Northern Americans got the 3rd place due to the better goal difference. A total of 59 goals have been scored in the 15 matches played, for an average of 3.93 goals per match. The match with the highest number of goals scored was France-Germany 6-3 in 1958 edition. The 2-1 score has occurred tonight for the 4th time and has become the most frequent one. With this score Portugal beat Soviet Union in 1966, Brazil defeated Italy in 1978 and Italy won against England in 1990.
