Match Summary:

Brazil flagBrazil

Brazil system
    System of play: 4-2-2-2
Strong points: Great technique and individual qualities; speed, especially in attacking situations; good at dictating tempo of the game; excellent use of long diagonal passes, especially left to right.
Weak points: Poor defending at corners and free-kicks against; had problems when the opponents (Zidane) ran at them with the ball; defended too deep into the box. Did not defend as a unit - not compact; easily caught offside when attacking.
Key players: Cafu (2), Dunga (8), Rivaldo (10).
France flagFrance

France system
System of play: 4-3-3 (basic) with 4-4-2 in defence. The three top attackers were mobile, slipping into midfield, and sometimes into defence - particularly in 2nd half-time when the team went into mass defence.
Strong points: Speed, strength, determination, courage and general skill.
Weak points: Inaccurate finishing in run of play.
Key players: Zidane, Barthez, Desailly, Deschamps, Thuram
Defence:
Offside 25 yds out and near half way - but only occasionally.
Zonal defence - although Dunga tried to pick up midfield runners from France.
Dunga - deep midfield position and Cesar Sampaio tried to block the route through the middle.
Good in the air (Aldair, Junior Baiano, Cesar Sampaio); lack of co-ordination when defending as a block line - big gaps between and behind the full-backs.
Little support from the front players in the defending activities. Central midfielders very defensively minded.
Defended in a mob against corners and free-kicks - not disciplined in the marking.
Defence:
Offside tactics were not much deliberate initially but came as the team moved out to support attack. Second half-time saw some deliberate offside tactics.
Markings were mainly man to man.
Deschamps played as the anchor man in front of defence.
General high standard of skill (heading, passing, individual technique, positioning).
Defence had much support from both midfield and attack.
Attack:
A rattlesnake style - slow, slow, quick. The wings well used by the full-backs. Surprise was the product of individual tricks / technique.
Shooting activities top level but rushed on this occasion. Only good heading skills by defenders on free-kicks and corners. Brilliant dribbling - over done! Recoup in their own half - often very deep.
Good support from midfield (mainly Rivaldo and Leonardo, later Denilson).
Brilliant use of long diagonals, especially left to right, looking for Cafu.
Attack:
Attack build-ups were methodical. There was much of wing play, swinging from side to side, particular to the right where Thuram comes up to attack from defence.
High standard of skill generally. Balls were recovered fast in all areas. The attackers participated much in defensive work.
Much support from midfield as well as wing defenders.
Set pieces:
Free-kicks: Direct by Roberto Carlos, also played wide for deep crosses into the box.
Corners: Inswings to the front and central areas looking for Aldair, Junior Baiano and Cesar Sampaio. Short corners by Roberto Carlos and Denilson.
Throw-ins: Long throw-ins by Roberto Carlos.
Set pieces:
Set pieces were well planned and executed - first two goals were evidences (corner-kicks).
Summary:
A team totally oriented towards attack - either running with the ball through central areas, playing combinations, or releasing the full-backs to deliver crosses. They attacked with six players and defended with a six men base, while the other four filled the space. On this evening they played badly as a defensive unit - in attack there was a lack of movement and penetrating passes.
Summary:
The team showed a great deal of determination. They remained calm, even when under barrages of attacks in early second half-time. Excellent tactics, good organisation, team work and individual performances of certain players were the key factor for the French victory.

Post match Facts and Figures

3 - Marcel Desailly is the 3rd player ever sent off during the final match. Before the French defender, two Argentineans, Pedro Monzon and Gustavo Dezotti were sent off during the match lost by the South Americans against Germany (0-1) in Rome on 8 July 1990. With today’s 4 yellow cards, the total number of cautions increased to 34 in 16 matches.

3 - Brazil has suffered tonight the heaviest defeat in its World Cup history. This is the 6th time that the former World Champions have conceded 3 or more goals, but in the previous defeats they managed to score at least one goal. Brazil still remains first in the all-time ranking. In 80 matches played (a record), the South Americans have earned 120 points. Their record includes 53 wins, 14 ties and 13 defeats (173 goals scored and 78 conceded).

7 - Zinedine Zidane is the 7th player who has scored twice in a final match. The French midfielder has been preceded by the Italians Piola and Colaussi in 1938, the German Rahn in 1954, the Brazilians Pele and Vavà in 1958, the Argentinian Kempes in 1978. Geoff Hurst (England) still remains the only one who has scored a hat-trick.

13 - France has attempted a total of 13 shots, just one more than Brazil. The South Americans put 7 shots on target, 2 more than the Frenchmen, but were not able to score any goals. Stephane Guivarc’h made 4 shots (none on target), Rivaldo 3 (2), Bebeto 2 (2), Ronaldo 2 (2), Denilson 2 (1), Zidane 2 (2), Djorkaeff 2 (1).

36 - Said Belqola has awarded 36 free kicks in the 90 minutes of the final match: 28 due to fouls (15 against Brazil, 13 against France), and 8 due to off-sides (5 against Brazil and 3 against France). Belqola (3 matches in this World Cup) has been the first African referee to officiate the final game.
