fitness and intelligence.
Outstanding players: Stam (3), Jonk (6), Overmars (14),
Cocu (11)

Korea Republic
System of play: The team attempted to operate
the 3-5-2 system but often ended in 5-3-2 as the wing-backs were often
not forthcoming in their midfield and attacking responsibilities.
Strong points: Speed of the players.
Outstanding players: Kim Byung Jo (GK, 1), Choi Yong
Soo (10)

Defence:
No deliberate offside tactics.
Mainly zonal marking.
Stam and Frank de Boer alternated behind defence.
Good standard of skills in all techniques. Switching
from defence to attack was systematic and effective. The 2nd goal resulted
from a fast counter-attack.
Two midfielders and the wingers consistently supported
the defence.
Abilities to read the game well.
|
Defence:
Concentrating more on defensive functions, they
had no though for offside tactics.
Marking was mainly man to man, but without tactical and
physiological ability for the end objective; regaining the ball.
Hong Myung Bo (20) played the sweeper behind the defence.
There was some ability in heading and other skills; switching
from defence to attack and vice-versa were often disjointed, particularly
in defence to attack.
There was support from attack as Kim Do Hoon often fell
back to work in the midfield and defence.
|
Attack:
Build-up of attacks were fast and organised. There
was a great deal of wing play on both sides with the wing-backs supporting
and sometimes overlapping the wing-attackers and midfielders.
Shooting could be more accurate; but there was good standard
of heading (4th goal was from a header) and other individual and team tactics.
They were fast to the ball, fought for it and won it consistently.
Plenty of support from midfield.
|
Attack:
Build-up of attacks was often slow as the wing-backs
and midfielders concentrated more on defensive actions. Wing play was virtually
non-existent as the wing-backs were reluctant in moving up and the midfielders
kept more to the middle.
Shooting and dribbling abilities were poor. Korea’s players
had not enough strength to contest for and win the ball.
Support from midfield and defence was not adequate.
|
Summary:
A team with a lot of tactical and technical skill, surprises
in their attacks as well as intelligence to benefit from the opponent's
weaknesses. |
Summary:
Korea did not seem to have much confidence in their ability
to match with their opponents. The team was totally dominated by the Dutch
and had no chance for a honorable result. |
