이에 한국은 용감하게 싸웠고, 이을용의 놀라운 프리킥과 송종국의 뒤늦게 터진 골로 터키를 쫓아갔다. 이번 FIFA 월드컵에서 수많은 이변을 일으켰던 한국에게 있어 오늘 경기는 다소 실망스러웠지만, 터키는 그 돌풍을 끝까지 몰고 가고야 말았다. 오늘 한국팀의 패배는 98년 프랑스 FIFA 월드컵 당시 네덜란드 팀 이후로 거스 히딩크 감독이 이끄는 팀이 3-4위전에서 겪은 두 번째 패배가 된다. 

전반전

경기 휘슬이 울리자마자 하칸 수쿠르는 이번 월드컵 본선 들어 자신의 첫 골을 터뜨렸다. 한국 수비수 홍명보가 하프라인에서 이어 받은 공을 페널티 구역 언저리에서 처리하다 수쿠르에 빼앗긴 것이다. 이번 대회에서 골을 기록하지 못하고 있던 스트라이커 수쿠르는 뺏은 공을 재빨리 골로 연결시켜 FIFA 월드컵™ 사상 최단시간에 골을 기록했다. (1-0, 1분) 

엠레 벨로조글루가 추가골 찬스를 아슬아슬하게 살리지 못한 후(7분) 한국은 무섭게 반격에 나서 환상적인 골을 기록해 스코어를 동점으로 만들었다. 왼발잡이 이을용이 문전 20여 미터에서 찬 프리킥이 환상적으로 휘어 들어가, 골키퍼 루스투 렉베르가 미처 손을 쓰기도 전에 골 네트를 힘차게 갈랐다.(1-1, 9분) 

한국은 몇 분 후 역전 찬스를 맞았다. 이천수가 위험한 상황을 만들어 골 박스 바로 바깥에서 슛을 쏴 골키퍼 루스투를 위협했으나 골키퍼는 이를 선방했다. (12분) 

그리고 터키는 알디라이 바스튀르크, 일한 만시즈 그리고 하칸 수쿠르로 이어지는 환상적인 인터플레이로 눈깜짝할 사이에 한국 진영을 침투했고 만시즈가 가볍게 공을 차넣어 공격을 마무리했다. (1-2, 13분) 

안정환이 페널티 박스 안에서 현란한 몸 동작으로 골키퍼 루스투를 현혹시키는가 싶었지만 골키퍼는 집중력을 잃지 않고 ‘골든 보이’ 안정환이 골문 위쪽 구석을 겨냥하며 쏜 슛을 다이빙 하며 걷어내었다. (21분) 

그리고 또다시 안정환이 골문을 위협하며 쇄도해 들어왔으나 골키퍼는 긴 머리를 휘날리며 안정환에게 연결되려는 쓰루 패스를 차단해 한국의 공격을 무산시켰다. (26분) 

전반전이 끝나기 전, 사기가 오를 대로 오른 터키는 한 골을 더 추가해 점수차를 벌여놓았다. 만시즈와 수쿠르가 공을 주고 받으며 침투하고 만시즈가 이운재 골키퍼의 키를 넘겨 한국의 골 네트를 흔들면서 자신의 오늘 두 번째 골을 기록했다. (1-3, 32분) 

또한 엠레가 올려준 코너 킥을 수쿠르가 불사조처럼 날아올라 터키는 또다시 추가 득점 찬스를 맞았다. 하지만 이운재 골키퍼가 이를 저지했다. (37분) 

후반전 

한국은 후반전을 맞아 만회골을 얻기 위해 거칠게 터키를 몰아 부쳤다. 송종국이 문전으로 쇄도하여 공을 한 번 접은 후에 날린 강력한 중거리 슛은 크로스바 위로 살짝 떠버렸다 (52분). 이어 이을용은 뛰어난 볼 컨트롤에 이어 중거리 슛을 날렸지만, 공은 루스투 골키퍼의 품에 안겨버렸다 (54분). 

한국은 터키 수비진의 실책을 틈타 득점 기회를 맞이하였다. 터키의 수비수 알파이 오잘란과 루스투 골키퍼가 충돌하면서 공이 문전으로 흘러나왔지만, 한국 선수들은 이 기회를 살리지 못했다 (64분). 

터키는 자신들의 리드를 지키기 위하여 필사적인 수비를 펼치며 한국의 공세에 맞섰다. 터키 선수들이 오프사이드라고 주장하는 상황에서, 차두리에게 헤딩 슛으로 터키의 골문을 열 수 있는 기회가 왔지만, 공은 그의 머리에 닿지 않고 지나쳐 버렸다 (70분). 

한국은 경기 종료 15분 전부터 더욱 파상적인 대공세를 펼치며 터키의 골문을 열고자 노력하였다. 안정환이 힐 패스로 페널티 에어리어에 위치한 이천수에게 공을 연결해 주었고, 이천수를 이를 슛으로 연결하였다. 그러나 루스투 골키퍼는 빠르게 몸을 날리면서 그의 슛을 막아 내며 실점의 위기를 수습하였다 (79분). 

다시 안정환이 날린 회심의 중거리 슛은 터키 골문의 옆 그물에 흔들며 아깝게 벗어나 버렸다 (83분). 이어 한국 전역을 열광시킬 수도 있었던 결정적인 차두리의 슛은 루스투 골키퍼의 필사적인 방어로 인해 득점과는 연결되지 않았다 (84분). 

한국은 경기 종료 직전에 1골을 만회하였지만, 승부를 뒤집기에는 너무나 늦은 시간이었다. 송종국의 중거리 슛은 차두리의 등에 맞고 공의 방향이 굴절되면서 터키의 골문으로 빨려 들어갔다 (2-3, 93분).

Turkey scored the fastest goal in finals history and held on for a 2-3 victory over Korea in the third place match in Daegu, Korea. Ilhan Mansiz scored a brace for the Europeans after Hakan Sukur had put the co-hosts behind just an amazing 11 seconds after kick-off. 

Korea battled bravely but only managed Lee Eul-Yong's superb free-kick and a late goal from Song Chong-Gug. It is ultimately an anticlimactic ending for Korea after so many high points in the tournament, but Turkey continued their surprising run of achievements. It is coach Guus Hiddink's second consecutive loss in the third place match after losing in the corresponding fixture with Holland at France 98.  

Match Summary  

And right off the bat, Hakan Sukur grabbed his first goal at the finals as Hong Myung-Bo gave the ball away at the edge of the area. A quick touch by the previously out-of-form striker and the ball was in the back of the net (1:0, 1').  

The Koreans battled back bravely and after Emre Bolozoglu went close (7’), the co-hosts grabbed a brilliant goal to draw level. A left-footed, curling free kick by Lee Eul-Yong from 25 yards bent wonderfully and nicked Recber Rustu’s post before nestling in the back of the net (1:1, 9’).  

The Koreans again went close just minutes later as Lee Chun-Soo forced Rustu into a fine save with a shot from outside the box (12’).  

Seemingly from nowhere, the Turks went ahead as a good piece of interplay between Yildiray Basturk, Ilhan Mansiz and Hakan Sukur led to a simple tap in from Mansiz (1:2, 13’).  

A bit of creative dancing inside the box by Ahn Jung-Hwan seemed to lull Rustu to sleep, but the ‘keeper managed to dive away the golden boy’s quick snapshot to the top corner (21’).  

And again just minutes later the longhaired ‘keeper was off his line like a snap to clean up a good ball in through to Ahn Jung-Hwan (26’).  

The spirited Turks extended their lead before the half as a lovely give-and-go between Mansiz and Sukur led to Mansiz’ second goal ? a devilish, little chip over Lee Woon-Jae in the Korean net (1:3, 32’).  

And they nearly added another as Sukur rose like a phoenix to hammer Emre’s corner kick at the Korean net. Lee managed to keep it out somehow (37’).  

The Koreans hit out fast and furious in the second half, looking to chop away at the Turkish lead, and they nearly grabbed one as Song Chong-Gug turned inside and fired a bright shot just over Rustu’s crossbar (52’). And again Lee Eul-Yong tested Rustu from just outside the box after some good footwork (54’).  

The Koreans nearly took advantage of some confusion at the Turkish back as Alpay Ozalan collided with Rustu. The ball popped loose, but the Koreans couldn’t take advantage (64’).  

And the Turks kept on fighting looking to extend the lead, only marginally concerned with defence. Amid appeals of offside it was Cha Du-Ri who nearly headed the Asians back into the match ? but in the end he failed to make contact with the ball (70’).  

Korea battled back bravely in the final quarter-hour looking to close the gap on the brash, determined Turks. And they nearly got the goal they were looking for as an Ahn Jung-Hwan’s back heel found Lee Chun-Soo in the box. The shot though let all of Korea down as Rustu dived quickly to clean up the mess (79’).  

And Ahn Jung-Hwan almost put the Koreans in it again, but his shot sailed just wide of the Turkish net (83’). Just minutes later Cha Du-Ri nearly sent the nation crazy, again though Rustu was down like a shot to grab hold of the strike (84’).  

The Koreans grabbed one late, as a deflected shot from Song Chong-Gug trickled past Rustu (2:3, 93’).
