지금까지 4번이나 FIFA 월드컵™ 우승컵을 거머쥔 브라질은 호나우두(오늘의 버드와이저 선수)가 후반전에 터뜨린 한 골 덕분에 터키를 누르고 다시 한 번 꿈에도 그리던 결승에 진출하여 독일과 싸우게 된다. 축구강호인 두 팀은 이제까지 FIFA 월드컵 본선에서 한 번도 마주친 적이 없다. 

일본 사이타마 경기장에서 열린 오늘 경기는 대단히 창의적이고 손에 땀을 쥐게 하는 경기였지만 주로 주도권은 브라질이 잡았다. 오늘 경기에 출장 정지를 당한 미드필더 호나우딩요가 없는 상태에서도 브라질팀은 재빠른 역습과 적군진영에서 공격을 가할 만한 공간을 파악해 내는 데에 뛰어난 기량을 보였다. 특히 호나우두는 터키 수비수들에게 있어 내내 위협적인 존재가 아닐 수 없었다. 한편 터키는 세계무대에 나서서 다시 한번 숙련된 기술과 미드필드를 주도하는 위협적인 능력을 증명해 보였다. 
 

전반전

남미의 브라질은 다크호스인 터키를 맞아 결연한 의지를 보이며 강하게 나왔다. 하지만 유럽의 터키는 위축되지 않았고 강한 공격으로 맞받았다. 엠레 벨로조글루가 경기의 첫 슈팅을 했지만 마르쿠스 골키퍼가 쉽게 잡아 냈다(6분). 

잠시 뒤에는 벨로조글루가 찬 프리킥이 페널티 지역 안에서 브라질 골키퍼의 가슴을 철렁하게 했으나 브라질은 결국 안전하게 걷어냈다(9분). 

터키는 계속 압박을 가했고 파티 아키엘이 센터링한 공이 페널티 지역 안의 알파이 오잘란에게로 갔다. 알파이의 번개 같은 헤딩슛을 마르쿠스 골키퍼가 몸을 날리며 겨우 쳐냈고 관중들은 아쉬움을 달래야 했다(20분). 

브라질도 역습에 나섰다. 호나우두가 페널티 지역 오른쪽으로 달려오던 카푸에게 연결하였고 다시 카푸는 공을 한 번 건드린 다음 강하게 슛했지만, 루스투 렉베르 골키퍼가 넘어지며 공을 막아냈다(21분). 

바로 이어 히바우두가 빠르게 슛한 공이 렉베르 골키퍼의 몸에 맞고 나왔고 이 공을 호나우두가 슛했지만 역시 골키퍼에게 안기고 말았다(23분). 

전반의 위협적인 분위기가 계속되면서 호나우두가 다시 한 번 중거리슛했지만 루스투 골키퍼가 쉽게 잡을 수 있는 공이었다(29분). 

히바우두는 뚝 떨어지는 장거리슛으로 루스투 골키퍼를 또 한 번 괴롭혔다(34분). 바르셀로나 소속의 히바우두는 다시 한 번 왼발 슛을 날려 남미 관중을 자리에서 일어나게 했으나 공은 골대를 살짝 벗어났다(36분). 

전반 종료 직전 호베르투 카를로스가 왼쪽을 파고 들다가 멋지게 안쪽으로 꺾으며 슛했지만 역시 루스투 골키퍼의 선방에 막히고 말았다(43분). 

후반전 

후반전에 들어서자 마자 마법사 호나우두가 아주 영리한 발재간으로 브라질에게 선제골을 선사하였다. 그는 4명의 터키 수비수를 농락하면서 발끝으로 공을 차는 재치 있는 슈팅을 날렸다. 선방을 거듭하던 루스투 골키퍼는 팔을 펼쳐 막으려 했지만, 공은 그의 손을 지나 골문 안으로 굴러 들어 갔다 (49분, 1-0) 

이후 브라질은 터키를 계속 압박해 나갔다. 그러나 터키는 이에 굴하지 않고 반격을 개시하였다. 벨로조글루가 크로스를 올린 것이 선수의 몸에 맞고 굴절되면서 골문을 향해 위협적으로 날아갔지만 브라질의 골문을 살짝 빗겨 나갔다 (56분). 

호나우두는 문전을 향해 쇄도하는 에디우손을 발견하고 쓰루 패스로 공을 연결하였다. 브라질이 두 번째 골을 뽑아 낼 수 있는 절호의 순간에, 터키의 수비수는 한 발 앞서 공을 밖으로 쳐내면서 위기를 가까스로 수습하였다 (58분). 이후 브라질은 터키를 세차게 몰아쳤다. 

호나우두가 패스해 준 공을 받아 클레베르손이 위협적인 슛을 날렸지만, 공은 루스투 골키퍼의 정면으로 향하였다 (61분). 

다시 브라질은 추가골을 얻을 수 있는 득점 기회를 만들어 냈다. 루이장은 카푸의 패스를 받아 오버헤드킥으로 회심의 슈팅을 날렸다. 그러나 공은 땅을 크게 튕기면서 크로스바 위로 살짝 벗어나 버렸다 (72분). 

터키는 동점골을 얻기 위해 필사적으로 공격에 나섰다. 일한 만시스는 왼쪽 측면에서 크로스와 슈팅의 구분이 모호하게 공을 띄웠고, 마르쿠스 골키퍼는 이 공을 가까스로 크로스바 위로 처내었다 (78분). 

프리킥 상황에서 사스는 문전에 자리한 수쿠르를 보고 그에게 공을 띄워 주었고, 수쿠르는 이를 받아 멋지게 몸을 돌려서 슛으로 연결하였다. 수쿠르에게는 천금과도 같은 골을 기록할 수도 있는 순간이었지만, 마르쿠스 골키퍼는 그의 결정적인 슛을 막아내었다 (81분). 

터키는 경기가 종료될 때까지 브라질을 맞아 용감하게 맞섰지만, 오늘은 승리의 여신은 브라질에게 미소를 지었다.

Four-times champions Brazil worked their way past Turkey thanks to Ronaldo's lone second half goal to set up a dream final with three-times champions Germany. The two giants of world football have never met in a FIFA World Cup™ match. 

It was an exciting, creative match on both sides, though Brazil always looked likely to go through. Even missing suspended midfield spark Ronaldinho, Brazil were quick to counter and deadly at finding space in the opposing half. Ronaldo was a constant menace for the Turkish defence. Turkey again proved their worth on the world stage, showing fine technique and dangerous skill in the midfield.  

Match Summary  

The South Americans hit out with pace and resolve, looking to send a message to the dark horse Turks. But the Europeans, not the least bit overawed, hit back on their own with some spirited attacks. Emre Belozoglu fired the match’s first shot of any consequence early, but Marcos got down well to keep it out (6’).  

And just moments later, a free kick from Emre caused the Brazil ‘keeper all sorts of problems in the penalty area but eventually found its way out of the danger area (9’).  

The Turks continued to press, and a tantalizing Fatih Akyel cross picked out Alpay Ozalan in the box. A thundering header was only just kept out by a sprawling Marcos (20’).  

Brazil hit back though as Ronaldo fed Cafu, sprinting in at the right side of the box. One touch, and a ferocious shot had Recber Rustu on the ground to keep the ball out (21’).  

Shortly thereafter Rivaldo fired in a snapshot that had Rustu diving fast. The ball came loose, but Ronaldo hit the rebound right back at the ‘keeper again (23’).  

Another shot from Ronaldo from distance caused Rustu little trouble as the first half continued on at a fearsome pace (29’).  

A dipping, long-range shot from Rivaldo had Rustu on the grass to keep it out (34’). And again the Barca man nearly put the South Americans up as his left-footed shot swung just past Rustu’s post (36’).  

Just before the break Roberto Carlos broke like a snap down the left, cut inside wonderfully, but again Rustu was equal to the task (43’).  

Straight away in the second half, magic man Ronaldo put Brazil ahead with a brilliant bit of football. Teasing four defenders, the killer unleashed a ferocious toe poke, and though the brave Rustu got a hand to it, it was a goal all the way (49’, 1:0).  

The South Americans continued to pour on the pressure, but Turkey hit back as a deflected Emre cross nearly caught Marcos off his line (56’).  

But Brazil almost went two goals up as Ronaldo found Edilson racing toward goal. The Turk defence did well to clear the lines, but the South Americans were beginning to exert serious control over the match (58’).  

Ronaldo poked the ball into Kleberson looking dangerous, but the midfielder’s strike sailed right into Rustu’s arms (61’).  

And as the Brazilians pressed they nearly grabbed a good one. Cafu’s ball found Luizao in the box. His flying overhead kick took an awkward bounce and ended up over Rustu’s crossbar (72’).  

Ilhan Mansiz sent either a cross or a shot in, but one or the other, it had Marcos scrambling to push it over the crossbar as Turkey searched desperately for an equalizer (78’).  

Hakan Sukur nearly grabbed an historical goal, as Sas’ free kick found him inside the box. A wonder turn and strike had Marcos looking uncomfortable ? but he kept it out somehow (81’).  

But as the Turks battled bravely in the dying moments, it was Brazil that were to rule the day.
