브라질의 히바우두와 후나우딩요는 하프타임을 전후로 각각 1골씩을 득점하여 1-0으로 앞서던 잉글랜드를 탈락시켰다. 이제까지 FIFA 월드컵™에서 4번이나 우승컵을 거머쥔 '영원한 우승 후보' 브라질은 곧 터키와 세네갈전 8강 경기에서 우승하는 팀과 4강에서 만나게 된다. 

공격형 미드필더 호나우딩요는 오늘 일본 시즈오카에서 열린 경기에서 첫 번째골을 단독으로 어시스트하고 프리킥으로 마술과도 같은 두 번째 골을 터뜨리는 등 놀라운 활약을 했지만, 두 번째 골을 올린지 얼마 되지 않아 레드 카드를 받고 퇴장당하고 말았다. 스벤 고란 에릭슨 감독이 이끄는 잉글랜드는 전반전에서 마이클 오웬이 선제골을 획득하며 선두에 서는 듯 했으나, 결국 역사상 FIFA 월드컵 경기에서 단 한번도 브라질을 꺾어 본 적이 없는 징크스를 벗지 못하고 말았다. 
 

전반전

양팀은 경기 시작 10분 만에 서로의 문전을 위협하며 기선을 잡기 위해 접전을 벌였다. 이 가운데 바르셀로나의 히바우두가 페널티 에어리어 외곽에서 슛을 시도했으나 무위로 끝나고 말았다(6분). 

브라질은 전통적인 삼바 축구를 구사하며 공격에 나섰으나 잉글랜드는 탄탄한 수비로 번번이 공격을 차단하였다. 이 과정에서 호베르투 카를로스가 시도한 프리 킥은 상대 수비수를 맞고 데이빗 시맨 골키퍼가 버티고 있는 골문을 크게 벗어나고 말았다(14분). 

뒤이어 페널티 에어리어 가장자리에서 호나우두가 호나우딩요의 절묘한 패스를 받아 멋진 슈팅을 날렸으나 꺾어지는 그의 오른발 슛을 시맨 골키퍼가 넘어지면서 잘 막아냈다(19분). 

그러나 브라질의 수비 실책으로 마이클 오웬이 선제골을 터뜨리는 데 성공했다. 에밀리 헤스키의 롱패스를 브라질 수비수가 가로채려고 주춤하는 사이 공은 튕겨서 페널티 에어리어 가장자리에 있던 오웬 앞으로 가고 말았다. 오웬은 이 기회를 놓치지 않고 문전으로 달려 나가며 슛을 쏘았고 마르쿠스 골키퍼는 속수무책으로 골을 허용하고 말았다(0:1, 23분). 

그후로도 브라질은 동점골을 넣기 위해 애를 썼으나 득점 기회를 얻은 것은 오히려 잉글랜드의 헤스키였다. 그는 크로스 패스를 받아 힘찬 헤딩슛을 시도했으나 크로스바를 살짝 넘어가고 말았다(31분). 

마침내 브라질에게도 절호의 동점 기회가 찾아왔다. 미드필드에서 돌풍처럼 공을 몰고 나오며 잉글랜드 수비를 뚫은 호나우딩요가 페널티 에어리어 안쪽에 있던 히바우두에게 짧은 패스로 공을 넘겨 주었고 히바우두는 잉글랜드 골문 한구석으로 공을 내다 꽂으며 극적인 동점골을 뽑아냈다(1:1, 47분). 

후반전 

브라질은 후반전이 시작하자마자 상황을 역전시키기 위해 잉글랜드를 거세게 몰아 부쳤는데 정말로 얼마 안 있어 역전골이 터졌다. 호나우딩요가 25미터 전방에서 찬 동물적인 프리킥이 시맨 골키퍼의 머리를 넘기며 골문 안으로 빨려들어갔다. (1-2, 50분) 

한 골차로 뒤진 잉글랜드도 곧 반격에 나섰다. 브라질 수비가 미처 전열을 정비하지 못한 사이 헤스키의 빠른 슛이 골문 근처를 스쳐 지나갔다. (53분) 

잉글랜드의 공격이 거세지자 오늘 경기의 영웅 호나우딩요가 대니 밀스의 발을 밟으면서 퇴장을 당했다. (57분) 브라질의 킬러로 자리잡은 호나우딩요는 심판에게 간청해 보았으나 결국 억울함을 삭이지 못한 채 그라운드를 떠났다. 

한편 잉글랜드의 대니 밀스는 근성있는 플레이를 선보였다. 페널티 박스 안 쪽에서 브라질 수비수를 등지고 돌면서 슈팅 기회를 만들었지만, 공은 수비수의 몸을 맞고 크로스바를 넘어가 버렸다. 그러나 이때부터 잉글랜드의 공격이 날카로워지기 시작했다. (74분) 

한 명이 빠졌음에도 불구하고 브라질은 후반전 내내 경기의 주도권을 잡고 놓지 않았다. 만회골을 넣어야 하는 책임을 안고 있던 잉글랜드 선수들은 끝내 전세를 뒤집지 못하고 준준결승전에서 탈락하고 말았다.

Brazil got goals either side of half-time from Rivaldo and Ronaldinho to come from a goal behind and eliminate England. The four-time champions move on to face the winner of Turkey and Senegal in the semi-finals. 
Attacking midfielder Ronaldinho had an eventful match in Shizuoka, setting up the first goal, scoring a remarkable second from a free-kick, and then being sent off just minutes later. Sven Goran Eriksson’s men got a goal from Michael Owen to take the advantage. 

Match facts 

The two sides felt each other out for the lion’s share of the opening ten minutes. Barcelona’s Rivaldo tried a speculative drive from just outside the box, but it came to nothing as both sides continued to sputter (6’). 

Brazil did their best to surge into a trademark samba, but England were massed in huge banks at the back looking to hit out on the break. A Roberto Carlos free kick from way out took a big deflection and skipped just wide of David Seaman’s post (14’). 

A good bit of work between Ronaldo and Ronaldinho at the edge of the box ended in a tricky shot from Ronaldo, but Seaman was well down to keep the swerving right-footed shot out (19’). 

But a bit of confusion at the Brazil back line gifted Michael Owen the match’s first goal. A long ball in from Emile Heskey was controlled poorly by Brazil defender Lucio. The bouncing ball fell directly to Owen at the edge of the box and the golden boy marched in and finished well past a hapless Marcos (0:1, 23’). 

For the remainder of the half Brazil tried desperately to drag themselves back into the match, but it was Heskey who went closest to scoring as his looping header just barely skipped over the bar (31’). 

And at the last Brazil hit back with a bit of absolute brilliance. A long, mazy run through midfield by Ronaldinho opened up the England defence. A quick touch to Rivaldo in the box, and the midfielder hammered the ball into the corner of the net (1:1, 47’+). 

Brazil hit out straight away after the break looking to go up on England. And it didn’t take long as a devilish free kick from Ronaldinho from 28 yards looped in over Seaman’s head (1:2, 50’). 

A goal down, it was up to England to rally back, and Heskey’s quick ball across the goal mouth nearly caught the Brazil defence in a nap (53’). 

And in a rush of blood England looked to have caught a break as Ronaldinho, the hero of the match for Brazil, was given his marching orders for a studs-up challenge on Danny Mills (57’). The Brazilian danger man pleaded his case to the official, but in the end left the pitch surely feeling hard done by. 

Danny Mills hit out down the flank on a mission. A good turn inside the box from the fullback opened up some space for a shot. The try took a deflection and sailed over the bar, but England were beginning to look a bit more dangerous on the attack (74’). 

Despite being a man down, the South Americans kept possession and control through the meat of the second half. England, with the responsibility of attacking on their shoulders, never looked quite up to the task as they went tumbling out of the finals.
