일본 오사카에서 열린 오늘 경기에서 터키는 일한 만시즈가 터뜨린 골든골로써 세네갈을 누르고 준결승전에서 브라질과 싸우게 된다. 터키와 세네갈은 전후반 모두 한치의 양보도 없는 팽팽한 접전을 벌였고, 양팀 모두 놀라운 기량을 쌓았음을 보여주는 경기였다. 

그러나 결국에는 터키가 연장전에서 승리의 황금골을 얻어냈고, 이는 우미트 다발라가 크로스한 볼을 교체로 들어온 일한 만시즈가 예술적인 슈팅으로 골 깊숙히 쏘아 박은 것이었다. A조 조별경기에서 지난 우승국 프랑스를 무찌르고 신선한 스타일의 축구로 관중들을 사로잡은 세네갈팀은 아프리카에서는 유일하게FIFA 월드컵™에서 8강까지 진출했던 카메룬의 기록에 필적하는 성과를 얻었지만, 그 이상은 다음 FIFA 월드컵까지 미루어야만 하게 되었다. 

전반전

양 팀은 경기 초반 공격을 잘 풀어갔다. 세네갈은 엘 하지 디우프, 터키는 하산 사스가 경기를 주도했다. 전반 15분이 경과할 때까지 양 팀의 골키퍼에게 위협적인 슈팅은 없었지만 디우프와 일디라이 바스튀르크가 페널티 박스 안쪽에서 좋은 기회를 맞고도 공을 뺏겨 슈팅으로 연결하지 못했다. 

세네갈은 선취골을 넣을 수 있는 상황이었으나 운이 없었다. 칼릴루 파디가가 슈팅한 공이 터키의 렉베르 루스투 골키퍼의 옆을 뚫었으나 그만 세네갈 공격수 앙리 카마라에게 걸리고 말았다. 바로 직후 카마라는 돌면서 골문에 공을 집어 넣기도 했으나 오프사이드 판정을 받았다. (19분) 

터키 최고의 스트라이커이지만 이번 한일 월드컵에서 한 골도 넣고 있지 못하는 하산 수쿠르는 사스가 패스한 공을 전방 6미터에서 받는 완벽한 기회를 맞았으나 그의 첫번째 슈팅이 골문을 벗어나버렸다. (28분) 

전반이 다 지나갈 무렵 수쿠르는 또 한번 황금 같은 기회를 놓쳤다. 에르군 펜베가 왼쪽에서 낮게 깔아준 공을 골문 앞에 서있던 수쿠르가 제대로 방향을 돌려놓지 못하면서 기회가 날아갔다. (39분) 

전반 종료 직전 오마르 다프가 바스튀르크의 골을 무위로 만들며 세네갈을 살렸다. 사스가 페널티 박스 안쪽으로 멋지게 올려준 공에 바스튀르크가 머리를 갖다대자 세네갈의 토니 실바 골키퍼 사이를 뚫고 골문 쪽으로 굴러갔다. 그러나 다프가 미끄러지며 골문 안으로 들어가려던 공을 골라인 밖으로 걷어냈다. (44분) 

후반전 

양팀은 전반전의 양상을 그대로 이어 나가며 서로의 문전을 크게 위협하였다. 후반전 초반, 세네갈은 25미터 전방에서 프리킥 기회를 얻었고, 디오프가 이를 담당하였다. 그가 25미터 전방에서 날린 프리킥은 상대 골문의 오른쪽 상단을 살짝 벗어났다 (53분). 이어 터키가 반격을 감행하여 바스튀르크가 눈부신 문전 돌파에 이어 슛을 날렸지만 세네갈 수비수의 몸에 맞으며 골과는 연결이 되지 않았다 (55분). 

양팀이 이렇듯 한 차례씩의 공방전을 펼친 이후, 터키가 경기의 주도권을 잡으며 세네갈을 압박해 나갔다. 터키는 좌측 측면에서 우미트 다발라의 날카로운 크로스에 이은 하칸 수쿠르의 헤딩 슛으로 공세의 결실을 얻는 듯 보였다. 그러나 세네갈의 수비수는 수쿠르보다 앞서 공을 차단하면서 팀을 위기에서 구했다 (64분). 

후반 중반 이후부터는 양팀은 모두 득점 기회를 만드는데 애를 먹었다. 터키의 수비진은 세네갈 공격의 핵심인 디오프를 꽁꽁 묶어 두었다. 그러나 터키의 공격은 이전보다 정교함이 떨어지는 모습을 보여 주었다. 바스튀르크는 상대 수비수보다 앞서 골문을 향해 치고 나가며 절호의 득점 기회를 맞이하였다. 그러나 그는 문전에서 슛을 하지 않고 부정확한 크로스를 날리며 기회를 무산시키는 이해할 수 없는 플레이를 펼치고 말았다 (77분). 

후반 종료 직전에 카마라는 결정적인 득점 기회를 맞이하여 다시 한 번 세네갈에게 승리를 선사하는 영웅이 될 수도 있었다. 그러나 카마라가 문전 모서리에서 날린 회심의 슛은 루스투 골키퍼의 선방에 가로 막혔다 (92+ 분). 

연장전 

터키가 연장전에서 골든 골을 기록하는 데는 단지 4분만이 필요했다. 다발라가 오른쪽 터치 라인에서 센터링을 띄워 주었고 후반전 수쿠르를 대신해 투입된 일한 만시즈는 골 에어리어 가장자리에서 멋진 하프 발리슛을 날려 반대편 골 네트 안으로 들어가는 골을 성공시켰다(94분).

Ilhan Mansiz scored a golden goal to give Turkey a victory in Osaka, Japan and move them into the semi-finals against Brazil. In the battle of the two surprising quarter-finalists, it was a scrappy match with neither side giving an inch. 

However, the Turks came out the brighter in extra time, and substitute Ilhan finished an Umit Davala’s cross beautifully. Senegal, who thrilled audiences with their style beating holders France in the tournament opener, go out having equalled the furthest an African team has ever advanced in the FIFA World Cup™.

Both teams looked good in the attack early, with the likely suspects, Senegal’s El Hadji Diouf and Turkey’s Hasan Sas, leading the way. Although neither goalkeeper was tested in the first quarter hour, Diouf and Yildiray Basturk each had dangerous opportunities in the penalty area, but both were dispossessed before they could shoot. 

Senegal were unlucky not to open the scoring when Khalilou Fadiga put his shot past Turkey keeper Recber Rustu only to see it stopped by Senegal forward Henri Camara. Although Camara managed to put his own shot in the net, the goal was disallowed when he was ruled offside (19’). 

Hakan Sukur, Turkey’s all-time leading goal scorer who has been held scoreless in Korea/Japan, let a golden opportunity slip buy when a pass from Sas seemed to find Sukur ready to bury the ball into the back of the net from six metres, but his first touch let him down, and the ball rolled out of danger (28’). 

Things did not get better for Sukur as the first half continued. He missed another gem of a chance when Ergun Penbe served a low cross from the left side that Sukur again failed to direct toward goal from in close (39’). 

Omar Daf robbed Basturk of a goal shortly before half-time. Sas lofted a wonderful ball into the area, and Basturk headed it past Senegal keeper Tony Sylva, but Daf slid in to clear the ball off the line before it could roll into the goal (44’). 

The second half started as the first did, with both teams looking dangerous. Diouf missed a goal by inches early in the second half as his free kick from 25 metres just missed the upper-right corner (53’). Then Basturk made a nice run to get free in the area, but his shot was blocked by a defender (55’). 

After the early forays by each side, Turkey had a period of sustained pressure. It looked as though that pressure was to pay off when Umit Davala served a cross from the right that seemed destined to find Sukur, but a Senegal defender cleared it out of danger at the last instant (64’).  

Scoring chances became far less frequent as the half wore on, and the Turkish defence especially did well to keep Diouf quiet. However, the Turkey attack seemed to get less precise. Basturk gave away a great opportunity when he got behind the defence and, instead of shooting, he inexplicably launched a cross that sailed well out of danger (77’). 

In stoppage time Camara almost became Senegal’s goal hero for the second successive game, but Rustu did well to stop the Sedan man’s shot from the edge of the area (92’+). 

Turkey only needed four minutes of extra time to score the golden goal. Davala served a cross from the right touchline, and Ilhan Mansiz, who had come on for Sukur in the second half, swept the ball into the far-side netting with a beautiful half-volley from the edge of the goal area (94’).
