제주도 서귀포 월드컵 경기장에서 열린 이번 16강 첫 경기에서는 경기 내내 진퇴양난의 양상을 보였지만, 결국 독일의 올리버 노이빌의 절묘한 발리가 독일에게 우승의 결정골을 안겨 주었다. 독일은 현재 처음으로 8강 진출이 확정된 팀이며, 8강에서는 멕시코-미국전 승자와 싸우게 된다. 

전반전 45분에서는 독일이 주도권을 쥐고 계속 파라과이 문전에 압력을 가했지만 파라과이도 곧 셀소 아얄라와 호르헤 캄포스 등이 슈팅 기회를 만들어 내서 독일 골키퍼 올리버 칸의 간담을 서늘하게 했다. 후반전에서 양팀은 위험 부담을 동반한 공격적인 전략을 배제하고 다소 소극적인 게임을 펼쳤다. 

전반전

경기의 첫 번째 슛은 독일의 미하엘 발락의 발에서 나왔다. 부상으로 경기 출전 여부가 불확실했던 바이에른 뮌헨 소속의 발락은 20 미터 전방에서 오른발 강슛으로 파라과이 골문의 모서리를 노렸지만 높이 뜨고 말았다 (13분). 

확실한 득점 기회와 위협적인 돌파는 없었지만 독일의 압박은 계속되었다. 훌리오 카세레스가 마르코 보데에게 파울을 가해 독일은 25미터 전방에서 프리킥 기회를 얻었다. 발락은 프리키커로 나서 슛을 날렸지만 공은 다시 크로스바 위로 솟구쳐 버렸다. 

파라과이도 프리킥으로서 독일의 골문을 위협하며 첫 번째 기회를 맞이하였다. 이미 앞선 조별 예선 경기에서 정확한 프리킥 능력을 뽐냈던 프란시스코 아르세가 다시 강한 프리킥을 독일의 골문을 향해 날렸다. 올리버 칸은 강한 힘이 실린 이 공을 펀칭으로 처리하며 위기를 수습하였다 (22분). 

파라과이는 그들이 자랑하는 신예 스트라이커 로케 산타쿠르즈가 전반 중반에 부상을 당하여 전력에서 이탈하는 어려움을 안게되었다. 

그러나 산타쿠루즈의 부상 직후 파라과이는 선제골을 얻을 수 있었던 절호의 기회를 잡았다. 독일 진영에서 행한 칠라베르트의 프리킥으로 공을 전방으로 연결하였다. 칠라베르트와 같은 등번호를 달고 있는 독일의 올리버 칸이 이를 펀칭하였고, 흘러 나온 공을 잡아 호세 카르도소가 크로스로 셀소 아얄라에게 공을 연결해 주었다. 리버 플레이트 소속의 아얄라는 8미터 거리의 문전 한복판에서 발리 슛을 날렸지만 크게 벗어나고 말았다 (36분). 

파라과이의 역습은 독일보다 더욱 위협적인 모습이었다. 역습 상황에서 공을 받은 캄포스는 20미터 거리에서 왼발로 위력적인 중거리 슛을 날렸고, 올리버 칸 골키퍼는 놀라운 선방으로 이를 막아내었다 (38분). 

후반전 

후반이 시작되자마자 독일은 절호의 득점 기회를 맞이했다. 올리버 노이빌이 오른쪽에서 문전으로 넘겨준 완벽한 패스를 베른트 슈나이더가 받아 약 9미터 지점에서 슈팅을 날렸으나 칠라베르트 골키퍼에 의해 차단되고 말았다(47분). 

파라과이도 곧바로 역습에 나섰다. 교체 투입된 캄포스가 공간을 발견하고 왼쪽 길목에서 치고 나오며 페널티 박스 가장자리에서 슈팅했으나 독일의 칸 골키퍼는 오른쪽으로 낮게 들어오는 그의 공을 잘 잡아냈다(50분). 

다시 독일이 공을 독점하기 시작했으나 파라과이에게 위협적이지는 못했다. 그러던 중 노이빌이 순간적인 기회를 포착하고 스냅 슛을 시도했으나 칠라베르트가 왼쪽 골대쪽으로 다이빙하며 선방을 펼쳤다(62분). 

독일에게 또 다른 좋은 기회가 찾아 왔다. 처음으로 슈나이더가 파라과이 수비를 뚫고 오른쪽에 있는 프링스에게 공을 띄워 주었으나 프링스는 한번에 슈팅으로 연결하지 않고 왼쪽 발 안쪽으로 차는 바람에 공은 그만 높이 뜨고 말았다(68분). 

그 이후 양팀은 별다른 기회를 만들지 못하였고 세트 플레이에 주력하는 모습을 보여 주었다. 한때 파라과이 골키퍼 칠라베르트가 약 18미터 지점에서 직접 프리킥을 시도했으나 공은 골문을 훌쩍 넘어가 버렸다(74분). 

경기 종료 직전 마침내 기다리던 첫 골이 독일에서 터져 나왔다. 베른트 슈나이더가 오른쪽에서 치고 달려 나오며 노이빌에게 띄워준 완벽한 센터링을 노이빌이 하프 발리슛으로 연결하며 독일의 8강 진출을 확정짓는 한 골을 뽑아냈다(1-0, 88분).

It took a wonder volley from Oliver Neuville to break a game-long deadlock in the first match of the second round at the Jeju World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo. Germany became the first side to reach the quarter-finals where they will meet the winner of the Mexico - USA clash. 

Germany put on most of the early pressure in a tight opening 45 minutes, but Paraguay created the best chances as Celso Ayala and Jorge Campos both forced German ‘keeper Oliver Kahn into nervous moments. The second half offered little more by way of attacking football as both sides sat back speculatively.  

Match facts

After a scrappy opening, the first shot in anger came from Germany’s Michael Ballack. The Bayern Munich player, who passed a late fitness test, struck it well with the outside of his right foot but it flew high and wide from 25 metres (13’). 

Germany continued to press, though without creating any clear cut openings, and it was Ballack again who struck a 25-metre free kick a foot over the bar following a clumsy foul by Julio Cesar Caceres on Marco Bode (19’).  

Paraguay had their first chance from a long-range free kick. Francisco Arce, who has already proved in the tournament that he has a deadly shot, struck it with immense power forcing Oliver Kahn to punch it clear from under his own bar (22’).  

Paraguay were dealt a heavy blow on the half hour mark as their young striker Roque Santa Cruz limped off with an injury.  

But it forced Paraguay into their best period and they should have gone ahead shortly after. From inside Germany’s half, goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert launched a free kick high into the area. His opposite number Kahn punched clear to Jose Cardozo whose cross found Celso Ayala completely alone in the box, but the River Plate centre half snatched at the chance volleying well wide from 10 metres (36’).  

Paraguay’s counter-attacks were looking more dangerous as the half wore on and Campos 20 metres from goal forced a spectacular save from Kahn with a scorching right foot drive (38’).  

The second half kicked off with the best chance of the match. Oliver Neuville sprinted down the right and centred perfectly for Bernd Schneider whose shot from 10 metres was blocked well by Chilavert (47’). 

But Paraguay hit back immediately. Substitute Campos again found himself in space down the inside left channel and from the edge of the box forced Kahn into another good save low to his right (50’).  

Germany began to dominate possession without really threatening until Neuville popped up with a snap shot which had Chilavert diving to save by his left post (62’).  

Another good run from the impressive Schneider cut open the Paraguayan defence for the first time. He laid the ball off to Frings on the right but instead of hitting it first time, he chose to cut inside onto his left foot and the ball flew over (68’).  

With so few chances, the game looked likely to be settled by a set piece. It was all set for Paraguay’s keeper Chilavert but his free kick from 20 metres went a foot over (74’).  

Just as the match seemed set to be going into extra-time, Schneider ran down the right and crossed perfectly for Neuville to half-volley home with superb timing past Chilavert for his first FIFA World Cup goal (1:0, 88’).
