브라질은 일본 고베에서 열린 16강전에서 마크 빌모츠가 주로 활약을 한 벨기에팀을 상대로 '삼바'부대의 위력을 다시금 보여 주었다. 히바우두가 올린 첫 번째 골에 뒤이어 후반전 말기에 호나우두가 다시 추가골을 터뜨렸다. 브라질은 이제 8강에서 잉글랜드를 상대로 싸우게 된다. 

벨기에의 빌모츠는 전반 10분에 선제골을 득점하는가 했지만, 그 과정에서 호케 주니오르를 방해했다는 판정을 받아 반칙으로 골은 무산되었다. 엎친데 덮친 격으로 히바우두가 경기 67분에 화려한 첫 골을 쏘아 올렸을 때는 벨기에의 8강 진출의 꿈은 이미 무너지고 있었다. 여기에다 호나우두가 얻은 두 번째 골은 이미 브라질의 우승에 도장을 찍은 것이나 매 한가지였다. 

전반전

경기 시작과 함께 벨기에가 급습을 시도했다. 음보 음펜자가 25미터 중거리 슛을 쏘아올리자 마르쿠스 골키퍼가 겨우 쳐냈다. (1분). 이페스 반데르헤게가 위협적인 슛을 날려봤지만 골문을 벗어나 굴러가 버렸다. (5분) 

브라질의 첫번째 기회는 주닝요 파울리스타에게 찾아왔다. 페널티 박스 끝에서 그가 감아찬 슛이 오른쪽 골포스트를 벗어나 버렸다. (6분) 

몇 차례의 그림 같은 패스 끝에 호나우딩요가 공을 드리블하며 벨기에 페널티 박스까지 와서는 마크가 없던 호나우두에게 패스했다. 호나우두는 완벽한 슈팅 자세를 취하고 골대 오른쪽 위를 겨냥해 슛을 날렸으나 살짝 넘어갔다. (19분) 

호나우두가 왼쪽에서 수비수 한 명을 제치고 기가 막히게 연결해 준 공을 히바우두가 불필요한 오버헤드 킥으로 기회를 날려버렸다. (23분) 

양 팀 모두 박진감 넘치는 좋은 경기를 펼쳤다. 마크 빌모츠가 골을 넣은 줄 알았으나 파울로 무효 처리되고 말았다. (36분) 

호나우두가 결정적인 기회를 두 번이나 맞았다. 첫번째는 위험지역 안에서 게르트 드 플리거 골키퍼와 공을 다투다가 골키퍼에게 걸려버렸고 (37분) 그 다음은 히바우두의 감각적인 센터링을 받아 멋진 발리슛을 시도해 보았으나 크로스바 바로 위로 날아가 버렸다. (41분) 

호베르투 카를로스가 전반전 마지막 기회를 잡았다. 골문을 8미터 정도 남겨두고 카를로스의 발 앞에 공이 떨어졌고 각도가 없는 상태에서 슛한 공이 골문 앞을 가로질러 나가버렸다. (46분) 

후반전 

벨기에는 후반 초반 기회를 잡았다. 빌모츠가 20미터 지점에서 돌며 슛했지만 마르코스 골키퍼가 가까스로 쳐냈다(53분). 

사기가 오른 벨기에는 음펜자가 기회를 잡았지만 이번에도 마르코스 골키퍼가 달려들며 끝 줄 밖으로 쳐 냈다. 이어진 코너킥이 페널티 지역에 떨어지며 위험한 상황이 연출되었지만 골로 연결되지는 못했다(55분). 

마르코스는 다시 한 번 빌모츠의 슛을 멋지게 막아 냈다. 빌모츠가 왼발로 감아 찬 공은 골문으로 들어가는 듯 했으나 골키퍼의 손에 걸리고 말았다(63분). 

브라질은 히바우두의 화려한 기술로 결국 선제골을 넣었다. 호나우딩요가 중앙으로 패스한 공을 히바우두가 가슴으로 받은 뒤 기술적으로 살짝 차며 방향을 돌렸다. 그의 멋진 슛은 약간 굴절되며 골문으로 빨려 들어갔다(1-0, 67분). 

벨기에는 동점골을 위해 밀어붙였고 바트 고어가 백 포스트에서 침투하며 결정적인 기회를 잡았다. 그는 튀어 오르는 공에 머리를 대 텅 빈 브라질 골문을 향해 넣으려 했지만 그냥 흘려 보내고 말았다(73분). 

웨슬리 송크도 동점골의 기회를 잡았지만 16미터 지점에서 찬 그의 왼발 슛은 마르코스 골키퍼에게 막혔다(80분). 

벨기에가 선수들을 전진시키며 경기를 주도하였지만 역습의 위험이 도사리고 있었다. 후반 교체된 클레베르손이 오른쪽으로 파고 들며 달려오는 호나우두를 발견하였고 호나우두는 골키퍼와 일대일 상황에서 가볍게 골을 성공시켰다(2-0, 87분). 

벨기에의 고어에게 한 점을 만회할 기회가 왔지만 그의 슛은 골문의 오른쪽 옆그물을 맞출 뿐이었다(90분).

Brazil finally overcame Marc Wilmots-inspired Belgian pressure to find their traditional rhythm late in Kobe, Japan. It was Rivaldo who grabbed the vital goal, followed by a late strike from Ronaldo. Brazil now move on to face England in the quarter-finals. 

Wilmots thought he’d grabbed himself a goal with ten minutes to go in the first half, but was judged to have held Roque Junior in the process. And after Rivaldo turned and fired home extravagantly in the 67th minute, the Belgian dream came to an end. Ronaldo added another late strike to seal the night.

Belgium came out quickly, and Mbo Mpenza lofted a shot confidently from 25 yards out that forced Marcos to tip over (1’). Then Yves Vanderhaeghe hit a speculative shot, which was off target but rolled agonizingly through the Brazilian area (5’). 

Juninho Paulista had Brazil’s first good chance, but his curling shot from the edge of the box eased around the right post (6’). 

Following some fine build-up, Ronaldinho drove the ball to the top of the Belgian box and fed it to an unmarked Ronaldo. The striker had time and space, but his shot just failed to curl into the top right corner (19’). 

Ronaldo beat a player down the left to set up Rivaldo well, but the forward blasted an unnecessarily acrobatic overhead kick (23’) well over. 

With both teams playing well and the pace quick, Marc Wilmots had a goal called back for an infringement (36’). 

Ronaldo went close twice in minutes, first on a breakaway, which was snuffed out by Belgian goalkeeper Geert De Vlieger (37’), and the next from a cross by Rivaldo that he volleyed just over (41’). 

Roberto Carlos had the last chance of the half after seeing the ball fall to him just 8 metres out on the left side. The angle was small and his shot flew across goal (46'+). 

The second half started off with another early Belgian chance. This time it was Wilmots who turned well 20 yards out, but his blast was just tipped around the post by the diving Marcos (53’). 

This seemed to inspire Belgium’s confidence. Marcos was again saviour, just getting to the ball in front of Mpenza to force it over the end line. The resulting corner fell dangerously in the box, but ultimately came to nothing (55’). 

Another great save by Marcos denied Wilmots, who’s curling left-foot shot seemed destined for the net before the goalkeeper just tipped (63’). 

Brazil finally got their breakthrough following a great piece of skill by Rivaldo. Ronaldinho sent a ball into the middle, which Rivaldo controlled with his chest and a deft flick. His wicked shot was slightly deflected into the goal (1:0, 67’). 

Belgium pushed for an equalizer and had a great chance when Bart Goor sneaked in at the back post. However, he just couldn’t manage to direct the bounding ball into the exposed Brazilian net (73’). 

Wesley Sonck had the next chance to equalise, but his left-footer from 16 metres was smothered well by Marcos (80’). 

With Belgium sending people forward and dominating possession, they were always going to be at risk on the break. Second-half substitute Kleberson broke down the right and found an on-rushing Ronaldo, who finished it relatively simply with only the goalkeeper to beat (2:0, 87’). 

Goor had another chance for Belgium to pull one back but his finishing was lacking again, and he hit it in the side-netting from the right side of the box (’90).
