전주에서 열린 오늘 경기에서 멕시코는 경기 내내 위협적인 공세를 펼쳤지만 결국 미국이 멕시코를 누르고 독일과의 8강전을 벌이게 되었다. 미국은 비록 공 점유율은 멕시코에 비해 훨씬 떨어졌지만 대단히 효율적인 플레이를 펼치며 반격을 가했고, 결국 후반전에 랜던 도노번이 헤딩으로 터뜨린 추가골은 미국의 승리에 도장을 찍은 것이나 다름없었다. 

미국은 전반전 초반에 브라이언 맥브라이드 선수가 선제골을 올리면서 우승의 복선을 깔았고, 골키퍼 브래드 프리델도 철통같은 수비로 미국의 승리에 중요한 역할을 했다. 멕시코는 오늘 경기로써 16강에서 넉아웃되고 말았다. 

전반전

전반 시작하자마자 콰우테모크 블랑코가 긴 프리킥으로 브래드 프리델 미국 골키퍼의 간담을 서늘하게 했다(2분). 멕시코는 전반 초반 미국을 강하게 압박했다. 

하지만 미국의 주장인 클라우디오 레이나의 멋진 오른쪽 돌파가 첫 골로 이어졌다. 레이나가 크로스 패스한 공을 조시 울프가 영리하게 살짝 꺾어주자 센터 포워드인 브라이언 맥브라이드가 아무도 없는 상태에서 반대쪽 골대로 강하게 차 넣었다(8분). 

멕시코는 골을 먹은 이후 계속 경기를 주도했고 라몬 모랄레스가 멋진 볼 기술을 선보이며 강하게 슛한 공에 프리델 골키퍼는 몸을 날려야만 했다(16분). 미국은 초반 30분 가량을 수비에 치중하였고 멕시코가 계속 공을 소유하였다. 

멕시코는 블랑코의 25미터 슛으로 동점 기회를 맞았지만 이번에도 프리델 골키퍼의 선방에 막혔다. 블랙번 로버스의 골키퍼인 그는 공을 쳐냈고 미국 수비진이 안전하게 걷어냈다(26분). 

미국 문전에서 혼전을 거듭한 뒤 프리델 골키퍼가 펀칭한 공이 블랑코에게 갔지만 그의 슛 역시 골키퍼에게 막혔다(36분). 

랜던 도노번이 골문 앞에 있던 울프에게 빠르게 패스하며 미국은 다시 한 번 기회를 잡았지만 그의 슛은 오스카르 페레스 멕시코 골키퍼의 손에 걸렸다(37분). 

후반전 

멕시코는 후반 초반부터 한 골을 만회하기 위해 밀어부쳤다. 헤수스 아레야노가 어려운 각도에서 슛을 날려 프리델 골키퍼의 등골을 오싹하게 했다. (48분) 

브라울리오 루나가 미국 페널티 박스 구석에서 강력한 프리킥을 쏘자 프리델 골키퍼가 허둥대다 가까스로 크로스바 위로 쳐내며 코너킥을 만들었다. (52분) 

초반의 압박 플레이와 경기 주도권은 미국 수비를 계속 몰아부친 멕시코에게 있었다. 그러나 멕시코의 주도권에도 불구하고 클라우디오 레이나가 페널티 박스 끝에서 위협적인 슈팅을 터뜨리는 등 미국의 공격 역시 날카로웠다. (57분) 

페널티 박스 끝에서 미국측의 파울로 얻은 프리킥을 루나가 골포스트를 살짝 넘기는 위협적인 슈팅으로 연결하면서 멕시코의 압박은 계속되었다. 

그러나 공 점유율보다 효율적인 공격을 펼친 미국이 또 한 골을 넣었다. 풀햄 소속의 에디 루이스가 뛰어난 돌파력으로 공을 몰고 들어가다 위험 지역으로 달려들어가는 도노반을 보고 정확히 센터링, 젊은 도노반이 침착하게 머리를 갖다 대며 페레스 골키퍼를 다시 한번 침몰시켰다. (0-2, 65분) 

미국은 몇 분 뒤 다시 한번 득점을 올릴 뻔 했다. 존 오브라이언이 페레스 골키퍼의 크로스바를 살짝 넘기는 대포알 같은 슛을 날렸다. (69분) 

멕시코는 종료를 20분 정도 남기고 모든 에너지를 공격에 쏟아부었다. 살바도르 카르모나가 페널티 박스 약간 바깥에서 드라이브 슛을 날려보았으나 프리델 골키퍼에게 걸렸다. (73분). 오랜 라이벌이었던 두 팀간의 격돌은 결국 미국이 멕시코를 16강에 그치게 하는 것으로 끝났다.

Despite persistent Mexican pressure, the USA beat their continental rivals 2-0 in Jeonju, Korea, to move into a quarter-final match-up with Germany. It was a cool performance by the Americans, who struck well on the counter-attack and killed off the match through Landon Donovan's header in the second half. 

An early goal from Brian McBride set the tone, and goalkeeper Brad Friedel was again a key man for the Americans. Mexico have now been knocked out in the second round of the last three FIFA World Cups™.  

Match facts 

A long free kick from Cuauhtemoc Blanco right at the start of the half had U.S. ‘keeper Brad Friedel feeling uncomfortable (2’). The Mexicans kept up most of the pressure in the early moments of the match.  

But a great run from U.S. captain Claudio Reyna down the right flank led to the first goal of the match. A good cross from Reyna, and a brilliant touch back from Josh Wolff opened up space for a blistering strike just inside the far post from center forward Brian McBride (0:1, 8’).  

The Mexicans retained most of the pressure before and after the goal, and Ramon Morales stretched Friedel well with a ferocious shot after a fine bit of ball work (16’). The U.S. spent most of the opening 30 minutes sitting behind the ball while the Mexicans dominated possession.  

Again the Mexicans nearly hit back as Blanco fired a wicked shot from 25 yards that had Friedel scrambling to clean up the danger. The Blackburn Rovers ‘keeper gave up a rebound on the tricky strike, but it was cleaned up well by an alert U.S back line (26’).  

After the U.S. made a real hash of a clearance, Friedel punched the ball straight to Blanco, but the ‘keeper made amends as he kept the strike out well (36’).  

And the U.S. again went close as a flick on from Landon Donovan picked out Wolff alone in front of goal. The striker’s loaded shot was only just kept out by Mexican ‘keeper Oscar Perez (37’).  

Mexico hit out with pace early in the second half, hunting desperately for a goal as a Jesus Arellano shot from a tough angle nearly caught Friedel cold (48’).  

A fierce free kick from Braulio Luna at the corner of the U.S. box had Friedel scrambling just minutes later to push it off the crossbar and out for a corner (52’).  

All of the early pressure and possession belonged to Mexico, as they put the U.S. defence up against it in the early running. But despite Mexican dominance, the U.S. still looked dangerous on the break, as Claudio Reyna fired a good shot from the edge of the box (57’).  

A foul on the edge of the box led to a dangerous free kick for the Mexicans. Luna just barely hit the ball over Friedel’s crossbar as Mexico continued to heap on the pressure.  

But against the run of play, the U.S. grabbed another goal. A great run and cross from Fulham’s Eddie Lewis found Donovan darting in at the far post, and the youngster coolly put his header past Perez (0:2, 65’).  

The U.S. nearly extended the lead to three just minutes later as John O’Brien fired a rising rocket inches over Perez’ crossbar (69’).  

Mexico threw everything forward in the last 20 minutes. Salvador Carmona tested Friedel with a driven shot from just outside the box (73’). But it wasn’t meant to be, as the U.S. kept their neighbors out in a tense clash between two old rivals.
