안정환 선수가 터뜨린 극적인 골든골로써 한국은 FIFA 월드컵™에서 3번이나 우승컵을 거머쥔 강호 이탈리아를 무찌르고 8강에 진출하여 스페인과 대결하게 된다. 이탈리아의 크리스티안 비에리가 경기 초반에 헤딩으로 선제골을 얻은 후 한국팀은 좀처럼 만회골을 얻지 못할 듯 했으나, 후반전 종료 불과 몇분전에 설기현 선수가 올린 동점골 덕분에 연장전까지 가게 되었고, 끝내 안정환은 한국인들이 길이 축배를 들 결정적인 골든골을 터뜨리고야 말았다. 

대전경기장을 가득 메운 열광적인 한국응원부대가 지켜 보는 가운데 한국팀은 1966년 북한이 이탈리아에 거둔 승리를 재현했다. 한국이 경기 초반 페널티킥에 실패하고 비에리가 선제골을 따낸 후 이탈리아는 철통수비형 전법으로 전환했고, 한국의 동점골과 추가골에 의한 승리는 그야말로 아무도 기대하지 못했던 놀라운 쾌거였다. 이제 한국 팔도강산은 흥분과 환희로 밤새도록 축제분위기로 들썩거릴 것이다. 

전반전 

설기현 선수가 6월 18일 대전에서 열린 이탈리아와의 16강전에서 동점골을 터뜨린 후 기뻐하고 있다. 한국은 연장 후반전에서 추가골을 성공시켜 이탈리아를 누르고 8강에 진출했다. 

한국은 경기 시작 5분 만에 페널티 킥을 얻어내면서 멋지게 출발하였다. 크리스티안 파누치가 코너에서 설기현을 잡아 당겨 넘어뜨리는 바람에 한국이 처음으로 페널티 킥을 얻게 된 것이다. 그러나 안정환의 페널티 킥은 지안루이지 부폰 골키퍼가 골대 밖으로 쳐내고 말았다(5분). 

선제골은 이탈리아에서 터져 나왔다. 프란체스코 토티와 알렉산드로 델 피에로가 공을 장악하며 한국 문전에 위협을 가했고 크리스티안 비에리가 토티의 코너 킥을 받아 안쪽 골대를 향해 헤딩슛으로 연결하였다. 그리고 월드컵에서 그의 9번째 골이자 이번 대회 4번째 골이 한국 네트를 흔들어 놓았다(0-1, 18분). 

결국 첫 골은 전통적인 빗장 수비를 펼치던 이탈리아에게서 나온 것이다. 

안정환에게 또 다시 기회가 찾아왔다. 그는 페널티 에어리어 오른쪽에서 박지성의 패스를 받아 뒤로 돌면서 크로스슛을 날렸으나 그의 슛은 왼쪽 골대를 벗어나고 말았다(36분). 

이탈리아는 로마에서 같이 활약하고 있는 토티와 다미아노 톰마시의 멋진 연결로 추가골을 넣을 절호의 기회를 맞이했다. 토티의 패스를 받은 다미아노 톰마시가 문전 슈팅을 날렸으나 한국의 이운재 골키퍼가 몸으로 막아냈다(38분). 

이탈리아 페루자에서 활약한 안정환은 하프 타임 직전 동점골을 넣을 두 번의 기회를 가졌으나 모두 실패로 돌아가고 말았다. 첫 번째 그의 약 22미터 프리킥은 수비수 몸 맞고 벗어났으며(45분), 동료의 막강한 지원을 받은 두 번째 슛도 부폰 골키퍼에게 막히고 말았다(46분). 

후반전 

이탈리아가 뒤로 물러나 한국이 공격하기만을 기다리면서 후반은 지루하게 시작되었다. 

이탈리아의 수비벽을 딛고 한국은 여러 차례 페널티 박스 근처에서 프리킥을 얻어 냈지만 성공시키지 못했다. 

관중들의 함성이 다시 높아지고 있을 때 수비로부터 비에리에게 긴 패스가 넘어 왔다. 인터나치오날레의 스트라이커인 그의 오른발 슛은 골문을 벗어나며 황금 같은 기회를 놓쳤다(74분). 

비에리는 다시 한 번 결정적인 기회를 잡았다. 치열한 몸싸움 끝에 공을 따낸 후 골을 향해 달려가며 슛했지만 수비수의 발에 맞고 윗그물에 떨어지고 말았다(77분). 

이탈리아는 계속 좋은 기회를 만들었고 토티에게 결정적인 기회가 왔다. 90년 이탈리아에서 체코슬로바키아를 상대로 한 로베르토 바지오의 골을 연상시키며 토티는 여러 수비수를 제치고 달려가 슛을 날리려 했지만 마지막 수비수를 제치지 못하고 기회를 날렸다(79분). 

한국은 후반 내내 이렇다 할 기회를 만들지 못했고 지오바니 트라파토니의 전술이 한국을 잠재울 것으로 생각되던 후반 막판에 기적적인 동점골이 터졌다. 파누치가 페널티 박스 안에서 공을 제대로 처리하지 못한 순간 설기현이 낮게 깔아 구석으로 차 넣으며 관중들을 흥분시켰다(1-1, 88분). 

갑작스럽게 한 골을 먹은 이탈리아는 반격에 나섰고 톰마시가 완벽하게 센터링했지만 5미터 거리에 있던 비에리의 슛은 크로스바를 넘고 말았다(89분). 한국에게도 승리할 기회는 왔다. 교체되어 들어온 차두리가 오버헤드킥을 날렸지만 부폰 골키퍼에게 정면으로 가고 말았다(90분). 그리고 박지성의 슛은 옆그물에 맞고 말았다(91분). 

연장전 

패색이 짙던 후반 종료 직전에 극적인 동점골을 성공시키며 사기가 오른 한국은 연장전이 시작되자마자 연속 코너킥 기회를 잡으며 이탈리아를 압박했고, 이탈리아는 자기 진영에서 공을 걷어내기에 급급했다. 

황선홍은 프리킥 기회에서 수비벽을 구축한 이탈리아 선수들이 점프하는 것을 이용하여 다리 밑으로 낮게 깔리는 슛으로 골든 골을 노렸다. 공은 오른쪽 모서리를 날카롭게 날아갔지만 부폰 골키퍼가 몸을 날리며 이를 막아냈다 (102분). 

이탈리아가 한국의 문전을 위협한 상황에서 심판이 내린 판정은 논란을 불러일으킬 수도 있는 것이었다. 한국의 페널티 에어리어 안으로 파고든 토티는 수비수와 경합하는 도중에 넘어졌고, 주심은 토티에게 페널티 킥을 부여하는 대신 시뮬레이션 액션으로 판정하고 두 번째 옐로우 카드를 꺼내 들었다. 이로써 토티는 퇴장을 당하고 말았다 (103분). 

황선홍은 한국에게 승리를 안겨줄 수 있는 결정적인 헤딩 슛을 날렸지만 골문을 벗어나고 말았다 (111분). 

동점골의 주인공 설기현은 수비 상황에서 젠나로 가투소에게 갖다 바치는 힐패스를 범하며 영웅에서 역적으로 전락할 위기에 빠졌다. 가투소는 이를 받아 문전으로 치고 들어가 슛을 날렸지만, 이운재 골키퍼의 놀라운 선방으로 득점이 무산되었다 (113분). 

그리고 나서 골든 골이 새로운 축구 역사를 만들었다. 크로스를 받은 안정환이 자신의 전반전 페널티 킥을 만회하고도 남는 헤딩 골을 성공시켰다. 극적인 골든골로써 그는 다시 영웅으로 돌아온 것이다 (2-1, 117분).

Korea's Ahn Jung Hwan scored a dramatic golden goal to knock three-time champions Italy out and advance into a quarter-final battle with Spain. They trailed the entire match after an early Christian Vieri header, but Seol Ki Hyeon scored late to go into extra time, and then Ahn became the toast of Korea. 

In front of a boisterous ocean of fans in Daejon, Korea repeated the victory of their neighbours North Korea in 1966 over Italy. It was an amazing victory that no one would have expected after Korea missed an early penalty and Vieri opened the scoring, therefore allowing Italy to embrace their "catenaccio" style. An excited nation will now settle into an evening of rejoicing.  

Match facts 

Korea got off to an incredible start when they were awarded a penalty after just five minutes after Christian Panucci pulled down Ki Hyeon Seol at a corner. But the spot kick taken by Jung Hwan Ahn was superbly turned round the post by Gianluigi Buffon (5’).  

The scare sparked Italy into life. They began to dominate possession with both Francesco Totti and Alessandro Del Piero looking dangerous. The Azzurri got their reward when Christian Vieri leaped highest to head in a Totti corner at the near post. It was his record-equalling ninth goal for Italy in the tournament and fourth of this championship (0:1, 18’).  

The response to the goal did not come from Korea but rather by Italy, who chose to sit back catenaccio-style on their lead waiting for Korea to attack.  

The tactic paid off for a while with the only chance falling to Ahn. He spun on a pass from Ji Sung Park on the right edge of the box but hit his cross shot inches over the angle of bar and post (36’).  

Italy almost went two to the good minutes later when the Roma connection Totti and Damiano Tommasi worked a wonderful move. The midfielder ran onto a cute pass through by the No10 but, with only the goalkeeper to beat, was well blocked by the body of Woon Jae Lee (38’).  

Korea’s Ahn, who plays his football in Italy with Perugia, twice came close to equalising for the co-hosts before half time. First, his 25-yard free kick was deflected just wide (45’). Then, as Korea responded to the huge support, he struck another sweet shot from distance which was smothered by Buffon (46’).  

It was a scrappy opening to the second half with Italy sitting back and inviting Korea to attack.  

Despite Italy’s defensive wall, Korea gained a series of free kicks on the edge of the box but they were unable to take advantage.  

As the crowd created another crescendo of noise, along ball from defence had Vieri clean through. The Internazionale striker, though wasted the gilt-edged chance firing wide with his right foot (74’).  

And it was Vieri again who went desperately close again. He battled to win the ball back and headed for goal only to see his left?foot strike clip a defenders boot and land on top of the net (77’).  

Italy were creating much the better chances now and they nearly extended their lead with a tremendous run by Totti. Reminiscent of Roberto Baggio’s goal against Czechoslovakia in Italy 90, the player beat a number of defenders on a run from inside his own half but just when he had a clear shot on goal he wanted to beat the last defender and the chance went begging (79’).  

Korea hadn’t created a single opportunity in the whole second half but just when it appeared coach Giovanni Trapattoni’s tactics had paid off Korea miraculously equalised with seconds of time remaining. Panucci failed to clear a chip in the box and Seol drilled the ball low into the corner to send the crowd wild (1:1, 88’).  

In a frantic finish, Italy ran to the other end of the park and Tommasi’s perfect centre was ballooned over the bar by Vieri from inside the six-yard box (89’). Even then there was time for Korea to win the match as substitute Cha Du Ri overhead kicked straight at Buffon (90’) and Park shot into the side netting (91’).  

Heartened by their late goal, Korea started the first period of extra time the stronger winning a series of corners with Italy unable to escape from their own half.  

Hwang Sun Hong cleverly shot under the jumping Azzurri wall and Buffon pulled out a miraculous save diving to his left to turn it round the post and save the Golden Goal (102’).  

Italy’s first forage into Korea’s half brought what could be one of the most talked about decisions of the competition. Totti fell under a challenge in the area and, as Red Devil hearts missed a beat, the referee ran to the Roma player instead of the penalty spot, producing a yellow card followed by a red (103’).  

Hwang had a glorious chance to give victory to Korea as all alone he headed a left-wing cross at Buffon (111’).  

After being the hero, Park was so close to becoming the villain after he incredibly tried a back heel in his own area. The ball fell invitingly for Gennaro Gattuso but his shot was superbly saved by Lee from point blank range (113’).  

And then the Golden Goal, the moment that will go down in history. Just as against the USA, a deep cross was flicked in by Ahn - the man who had missed the penalty 112 minutes before (2:1 aet, 117’). What a comeback!!!
