축구광을 뜻하는 `치우미(球迷)'가 수천만명에 이르는 작은 `축구대륙'으로
이번에 마침내 월드컵 본선 진출이란 숙원을 풀었다.
스포츠에서 유독 축구 만큼은 아시아권에서도 한국과 일본, 중동세에 밀려 기를 펴지 못하다 94년 프로리그 출범에 힘입어 월드컵의 갈증을 씻는 데 성공했다. 조직력보다 일부 선수의 개인기에 의존하고 스타급 선수들조차 자기관리를 못하는 후진적인 풍토 때문에 90년대 중반까지 제자리 걸음을 계속했지만 선진축구 접목을 통해 동북아의 새 강자로 거듭났다. 진용은 브라질에서 축구를 배운 미드필더 리티에를 비롯한 유학파와 양천, 마밍위 등의 유럽파로 짜여있다. 지난해 1월 취임한 유고출신의 명장 보라 밀루티노비치 감독의 지도력은 중국축구의 잠재력에 불을 질렀다. 월드컵에서 4회 연속으로 서로 다른 팀을 이끈 유일한 감독인 그는 3-5-2, 4-4-2, 5-3-2 등 다양한 전술을 소화시키는 한편 리웨이펑, 쉬윈롱, 두웨이 등 20대 전후의 `젊은피'를 중용해 새로운 활력을 불어넣었다. 신세대 중에는 최종예선 6경기에서 팀내 최다인 3골을 뽑으며 `밀루사단'의 황태자로 떠오른 플레이메이커 치홍이 주목할 만한 선수다. 노장 공격수 하오하이둥은 팀의 정신적 지주이고 수비에서는 투지가 좋은 미드필더 리티에와 오버래핑이 뛰어난 순지하이, 판즈이가 주전들. 13억 인민의 열화같은 성원과 90년 당시 처녀 출전한 코스타리카를 16강으로 이끌었던 `마술사' 밀루티노비치의 용병술이 어떤 결과를 맺을 지 주목된다. ▲인구: 12억6천500만

44 years of waiting finally come to an end
The long wait for their first ever appearance on the highest stage finals
finally ended for China, when Bora Milutinovic steered the world's most
populous nation to 2002 FIFA World Cup™ Korea/Japan. Chinese football
had been waiting 44 years to make its mark on the global game and the appearance
at next year's finals will be a step into the unknown.
Players such as Sun Jihai, Li Tie and Qu Bo all impressed during qualifying and are the most tangible signs that the Chinese FA's development programme and the professional league are bearing fruit. That China has had the talent to figure at the top of the Asian game has rarely been in doubt, a fact borne out by their reaching the semi-finals of last year's Asian Cup in Lebanon. The only question that remained was over the mental strength of a group of players who had consistently under-performed, a fact not lost on Milutinovic as he sought to qualify the team for the finals. Qualification - dominant second phase China breezed through Asia's World Cup qualifying tournament to reach their first-ever finals in a convincing and impressive manner. Despite a stuttering start in the preliminary rounds when Milutinovic's team only recorded narrow wins over the likes of the Maldives and Indonesia, it was in the second and final phase that the Chinese came to the fore. In what was universally seen as the easier of the two groups in Asia's final round of qualifying, China won five and drew one of their first six games to guarantee a place in the finals two rounds before the end of qualifying.
