유럽예선에서 체코와 불가리아를 제치고 6승4무로 조 1위를 차지해 통산
3번째로 월드컵 본선에 오른다.
덴마크의 축구사는 100년이 넘지만 세계무대에 모습을 드러낸 것은 불과 80년대였다. 첫 본선무대였던 '86멕시코월드컵 조별리그에서 스코틀랜드, 우루과이, 서독을 차례로 꺾고 16강에 오르는 이변을 연출했고, 유고의 대타로 나선 92년 유럽선수권에서는 독일을 물리치고 우승했다. 이어 98년 프랑스월드컵 때에는 나이지리아를 누르고 8강에 오르면서 유럽의 강호로 자리매김했다. FIFA 랭킹은 17위. 힘에 의존하는 유럽축구 스타일을 벗어나 공,수 모두 짜임새를 갖춰 조직력이 뛰어나다는 평가를 받고 있다. 라우드럽 형제 등 걸출한 스타플레이어를 배출한 덴마크 전력의 핵은 에베 산. 독일 샬케04 소속인 그는 지역예선 10경기에서 경기당 1골에 가까운 9골을 터트리며 유럽예선 통틀어 최다득점을 기록했다. '96-'97덴마크리그 득점왕에 올랐고 98년에는 전 소속팀 드뢴드비의 덴마크챔피언십 3연패를 이끌었다. 감독은 지난해 7월 보 요한손에 이어 지휘봉을 잡은 모르텐 올센으로, 덴마크협회로부터 혁혁한 공로를 인정받아 2006년 독일월드컵까지 유임이 확정됐다. ▲인구: 533만

Led by some of Europe's elite
Denmark qualified for the FIFA World Cup™ finals for the third time when they thrashed Iceland 6-0 in their final 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan qualifier in October. The Danes impressed throughout in a closely-fought group, from which they emerged unbeaten, having scored more and let in fewer goals than their nearest rivals, the Czech Republic. The side is peppered with top internationals, most of whom play outside Denmark. The British-based contingent includes Thomas Gravesen of Everton and Sunderland goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen, who has made a significant impression since taking over from the legendary Peter Schmeichel. Much hope is also placed on Jesper Gronkjaer of Chelsea. The former Ajax man missed the final qualifying game after incurring a serious knee injury, but should be fit in time for the finals. Meanwhile, pulling the strings in the middle of the park are Thomas Helveg of AC Milan and Martin Jorgensen, who also plies his trade in the Italian Serie A at Udinese. Up front the Danes are very strong. Schalke 04's Ebbe Sand having developed into one of European football's top marksmen, leading the German Bundesliga in 2000-01 with 22 goals. Alongside him, John Dahl Tomasson of Feyenoord weighed in with some vital strikes in the qualifiers. The current Danish coach, Morten Olsen, came to prominence as a player. He recently signed a long-term contract to continue in charge of the national team and is assisted by another former fan favourite, Michael Laudrup.
