월드컵 본선에 처음 오른 남미축구의 변방이다.
1925년 축구협회 창립 후 월드컵에서 번번이 쓴잔만 들이켰던 에콰도르는 과거 66년 지역예선에서 칠레와 플레이오프까지 간 것이 그나마 내놓을 만한 성적이었다. 지역예선에서는 공격시 안정된 4-4-2 시스템과 거친 수비를 앞세워 9승4무5패로 아르헨티나에 이어 2위에 올랐지만 화려한 성적의 겉과 속이 다르다는 점이 에콰도르의 말못할 고민이다. 해발 2,850ｍ 고지대의 덕을 톡톡히 봤다는 것인데 지역예선 18경기 중 홈에서 6승2무1패로 초강세를 보인 반면 평지에서 가진 원정경기에서는 3승2무4패로 반타작도 못했다. 원정에서 단 1승도 거두지 못한 '98월드컵 지역예선 때와 비교하면 전력이 향상됐다는 분석이 지배적이지만 공격력은 아르헨티나, 브라질, 파라과이에 이어 4위라는 게 전문가들의 평가다. 최전방에는 남미에선 드문 장신인 아구스틴 델가도와 이반 카비에데스 투톱이 포진하고 노련한 알렉스 아기나가가 중원에서 공격을 지휘하고 있다. 특히 카비에데스는 지난 8일 본선직행 티켓이 걸린 우루과이전에서 후반 천금같은 헤딩 동점골을 넣어 델가도와 함께 월드컵을 빛낼 스타로 자리매김했다. 사령탑은 콜롬비아 출신으로 프랑스월드컵 본선에서 콜롬비아를 이끈 에르난 다리오 고메스 감독으로, 지난 5월 청소년대표팀 선발 시비 끝에 전 대통령 아들인 선수측 경호원 총에 맞아 유명인사가 됐다. ▲인구: 1천300만

Ecuador: the history makers
Ecuador is a country of oil, emeralds and bananas. It is also a point
of reference for the rest of the world, hence the equator. What it has
never been, however, is a land of footballing opportunity.
So it was only when they set off on a run of five straight wins - against Chile (1-0), Venezuela (2-1), Brazil (1-0), Paraguay (2-1), and Peru (2-1) - that eyebrows (not to mention roofs in the capital Quito) started to be raised. Just as impressive was the manner of their victories: Ecuador were down to 10 men when they came from behind to beat Paraguay and Peru. The reward for such displays of character was a leap of 33 places in the FIFA world rankings, from 71st to 38th. Yet Ecuador, traditionally the poor relation of South American soccer, had been on the rise since 1989, when Montenegrin Dusan Draskovic took over as national coach. Among his proteges was striker Agustin Delgado, who finished joint top scorer in the Conmebol section alongside Hernan Crespo. "T?n's" goals helped secure a move to English Premiership club Southampton, as well as hero status. Just as valuable, however, were the contributions of his team-mates: Cevallos (Barcelona); De la Cruz (Hibernian, Scotland), Guerron (Deportivo Quito), Hurtado (La Piedad, Mexico), Poroso (Emelec); Tenorio (Aucas), Obregon (Delfin), Aguinaga (Necaxa, Mexico), Cleber Chala (Nacional); Ivan Kaviedes (Celta Vigo, Spain).
