지난 대회 우승국으로서 2002월드컵 본선에 자동 출전하는 세계축구
최강이다.
국제축구연맹(FIFA) 창립에 주도적으로 참여했고 안방에서 열린 98년 대회에서 처음 월드컵을 품에 안았다. '94미국월드컵까지 두 차례 3위에 오른 것이 최고 성적이었을 만큼 월드컵 우승과는 그다지 인연이 없었지만 외국인 선수에 대한 적극적인 포용정책과 축구인프라 구축을 통해 인재를 집중 육성하면서 `슈퍼파워'로 거듭났다. 월드컵과 지난해 유럽선수권에 이어 올해 컨페드컵까지 3대 메이저대회를 석권, 3년새 `트리플 크라운'을 달성하며 월드컵 우승후보 0순위로 꼽히고 있다. 최전방과 미드필드, 수비에서 빈틈 없는 완벽한 플레이를 펼쳐 `아트사커'란 찬사를 받고 있다. 지네딘 지단이 이끄는 미드필드가 두텁고 신세대 스트라이커 앙리와 트레제게는 갈수록 날카로움을 더하고 있다. 이들 중 올해 사상 최고 이적료로 레알 마드리드로 이적, 또 한번 화제를 뿌린 지단은 화려한 개인기와 리더십, 승부욕 등 3박자를 갖춘 `중원의 지휘관'으로서 프랑스 2연패에 앞장설 것으로 기대된다. 미드필더 뒤가리가 최근 호주와의 평가전에서 무릎을 다쳐 최고 두달간 결장하는 게 부담스럽지만 워낙 선수층이 두터워 전력에 마이너스 요인은 거의 없다. 98년 대회 우승 직후 에메 자케로부터 지휘봉을 넘겨받은 로저 르메르 감독이 현재까지 대표팀을 이끌고 있다. ▲인구= 5천955만명

Depth and confidence mark defending champions
If France can recapture the defensive solidity that won them the 1998 FIFA World Cup France™ and can break forward with the devastating fluidity that saw them lift the UEFA European Championship 2000 crown, then they will be a difficult side to beat come June in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan. While coach Roger Lemerre faces selection headaches that many of his peers would love to have, is the current French side does show a certain weakness in central defence. Laurent Blanc's retirement from the international scene paved the way for his Manchester United team mate Micka?l Silvestre to join captain Marcel Desailly in the centre, a pairing that had trouble containing the talents of Raul in Spain's 2-1 victory over France in March 2001. However, with Bixente Lizarazu and Lilian Thuram at full-back in a defence marshalled by top-rated goalkeeper Fabien Barthez, only the very best will be able to break France down. In midfield, Real Madrid star Zinedine Zidane will again be the team's creative lynchpin, and the ferocious skills of Arsenal's Patrick Vieira can be supported by a host of defensive or offensive players as the need arises. Arsenal's Thierry Henry has earned Lemerre's trust as first-choice striker, and Juventus man David Trezeguet has become something of a super-sub in late second-half appearances, such as in the UEFA EURO 2000 final, where he bagged the winner.
