`전차군단' 독일은 13회 연속 월드컵 본선에 나서는 유럽축구의 정신적
지주.
첫 대회인 30년 제1회 우루과이대회와 50년 브라질대회를 빼고는 지금까지 월드컵 본선에 빠짐없이 진출했다. 특유의 조직력와 투지 넘치는 플레이로 우승(54,74,90년)과 준우승(66,82,86년)을 3번씩 일궈냈다. 그러나 주전 노쇠화로 94년 미국, 98년 프랑스월드컵 8강에서 잇따라 탈락하고 지난해 유럽선수권에선 예선통과도 못해 `이빨 빠진 호랑이'로 전락하기도 했다. FIFA 랭킹도 톱 10 밖으로 밀려났다. 11월 랭킹은 전월보다 3계단 오른 11위. 발등에 불이 떨어진 독일축구연맹(DFB)은 지난해 7월 에리히 리벡 감독을 경질하고 이탈리아월드컵 우승 주역인 루디 펠러(41)를 대표팀 사령탑에 앉혀 위기 극복에 나섰다. 펠러는 후보 세바스티안 다이슬러 등 신예들을 기용, 신구간 조화를 꾀하고 포메이션(3-5-2)에 변화를 주는 등 새롭게 팀을 추슬렀다. 유럽예선에서 잘 나가다 잉글랜드에 1-5로 대패하면서 플레이오프로 밀렸으나 우크라이나를 꺾고 본선에 합류했다. 비록 독일의 월드컵 본선을 향한 여정은 험난했지만 신예들이 급성장해 우승 전력으로 평가받고 있다. 내년 월드컵을 빛낼 선수는 25세의 신예 키르스텐 얀커로, 1ｍ90의 듬직한 체구에다 골감각과 상황판단력이 탁월하다. ▲인구: 8,279만

Germany trying to get it right again
Germany's national football team is second only to Brazil in terms of
historical achievement. The Mannschaft has, however been in a state of
decline for the past decade, and the team is now desperately looking for
the spark that will bring them back among the world's elite.
The Bayern Munich trio have experience not only internationally, but have also achieved much with their club, culminating in their 2000-2001 UEFA Champions League success. In general though, the feeling is that some players who were expected to make an impact have not performed to the level necessary so far and Germany's greatest hope for future success, midfielder Sebastian Deisler of Hertha BSC Berlin, may be too inexperienced to make his presence felt at the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan™. One player who has risen to the occasion, however, is Michael Ballack, who was the surprise package of this FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder was Germany's top scorer and netted three times in the playoff matches against Ukraine, finally unleashing the potential that previously had only been on display at club level. Should he remain in this rich vein of form then he will be the key to Germany's dreams of winning the FIFA World Cup for the fourth time. Germany's defence, with players such as Jens Nowotny (Bayer Leverkusen), Christian W?rns (Borussia Dortmund) and Thomas Linke (Bayern Munich), allowed only ten goals in eight qualifying matches, half of those in a 5-1 home loss to England. In attack, the days of captain Oliver Bierhoff (Monaco) seem limited, as he has been used as a substitute in recent international matches, whereas strikers such as Carsten Jancker (Bayern Munich), Oliver Neuville (Bayer Leverkusen), Miroslav Klose (Kaiserslautern) and Gerald Asamoah (Schalke 04) have proved worryingly inconsistent.
