통산 3번째 월드컵 본선에 오른 `짠물축구'의 대명사.
포르투갈, 네덜란드와 함께 유럽예선 `죽음의 조'인 2조에 속했지만 무패행진 끝에 `오렌지군단' 네덜란드를 침몰시키며 2위에 오른 뒤 이란과의 플레이오프에서 승리해 본선행 막차를 탔다. 포르투갈과는 2무의 대등한 경기를 펼쳤고 월드컵 우승후보로까지 꼽히던 네덜란드에는 1승1무로 앞섰다 90년, 94년 월드컵 본선 9경기에서 경기당 0.78골만을 내준 아일랜드는 이번 유럽예선 10경기와 플레이오프 2경기 등 12경기에서 단 6실점, 평균 0.5실점하는 자물쇠수비와 잉글랜드식 힘의 축구가 트레이드마크다. 93년 한때 FIFA랭킹이 6위까지 치솟았다가 '98월드컵 본선행 실패 후 50위권까지 추락했지만 11월 현재 18위에 오를 만큼 가파른 상승세를 타고 있다. 대표팀에는 폭발적인 득점포는 없지만 미드필드에 로이 키언, 마크 킨셀라 등 득점력과 경기운영 능력을 고루 지닌 잉글랜드 프리미어리거들이 즐비하다. 이언 하트와 스티브 스톤턴이 이끄는 전형적인 유럽스타일의 포백수비를 바탕으로 로이 키언이 지휘하는 조직력은 세계 정상급으로 분류된다. 사령탑은 96년 2월 '90월드컵 때 잭 찰턴 감독 밑에서 주장을 지낸 마이클 매카시로, 프랑스월드컵 지역예선 탈락 등 잇단 좌절 끝에 5년만에 달콤한 열매를 맺었다. ▲인구: 379만

Captain and playmaker Roy Keane has finally reached the level of impact at international football that he has had for his club Manchester United over the past few years. The gritty midfielder has a talismanic power over the Irish team, lifting the entire side to levels they would almost never reach on their own. Keane's supporting cast are mostly young and exciting prospects. Blackburn Rovers winger Damien Duff, Ipswich's Matt Holland, Charlton's Mark Kinsella and Wolves flanker Mark Kennedy all give the Republic an unprecedented level of skill and flexibility in midfield. Leeds striker Robbie Keane (no relation to Roy) is one of Europe's most potent threats up front, while free-scoring Crystal Palace forward Clinton Morrison appears to have a bright future in the green shirt. Wimbledon and former Feyenoord striker David Connolly is also an excellent impact player that any side would love to have on the bench.
